Einfahrt von S/Y ToptoTop aus der Schweiz letzten Donnerstag in Rodrigues...-

Ich habe sie zwar nicht einlaufen gesehen, entdeckte das Boot aber noch am selben Abend am Quai, und muss sagen, dass mich die Palette an Logos und ihr auf dem Segel gedrucktes Motto "Global Climate Expedition" ein wenig in Aufregung versetzte...-

I didn't see them coming but on Thursday evening I discovered the boat at the quay and got rather intrigued and excited by all their logos and topic "Global Climate Expedition" printed on their sail...

Da sie gerade erst angekommen waren, wollte ich sie nicht gleich mit all meinen Fragen bestürmen und ihnen wenigstens einen Tag geben um sich nach dem sicherlich etwas rauhen Abschnitt von Cocos Keeling zu erholen, eine Entscheidung, die fast ins Auge gegangen wäre, denn die Abfahrt von Rodrigues war nämlich schon für Samstag Morgen vorgesehen. Aber ich hatte Freitag abend das unverschämte Glück noch zufällig Michael und Dominique über den Weg zu laufen, die mir nicht nur mehr über die Ziele der Weltumsegelung erklärten, sondern mir sogar noch all diese tollen Fotos für diesen Blogeintrag zur Verfügung stellten...-

To allow them a break of at least one day to adjust to our island after a usually rough turn from Cocos Keeling before contacting them, would have nearly turned out to be a complete miscalculation on my part, if I hadn't have the luck to meet Michael and Dominique on Friday evening -prior to their departure already on Saturday morning!- who explained not only the boat's mission to me but also shared all the photos you can see right now here in my post...-Und hier sind sie: Dario und Sabine mit ihren 4 Kindern Sandrina, Andri, Noe und die kleine gerade erstmal 4 Monate junge Allegra, die in Singapore geboren wurde, und die das Projekt und die Weltumsegelung betreiben...Dario und Sabine lieben die Berge und die See, haben einen Hintergrund als Bergsteiger/führer, Kayakfahrer und 100 anderen Fähigkeiten, die sie alle gekonnt in diesem auch von den Vereinten Nationen gesponsorten Projekt einsetzen.-

And here they are, Dario and Sabine with their 4 kids Sandrina, Andri (both born in Chile), Noe (born in Darwin) and the only 4 months old Allegra (born in Singapore). It's them who run the project ToptoTop and the circumnavigation... Dario and Sabine love sports, the mountains and the sea, have a background as mountaineering climbers and guides, are into kayaking and 100 other things which all come together in this project, also sponsored by UNEP.

Das war am 9.9.2011, nach 40 000 Seemeilen und 3205 Tagen der Expedition...

Aber was machen sie denn nun eigentlich?
Um es ganz kurz zu machen, ToptoTop will aufzeigen, dass es möglich ist, allein durch menschliche und natürliche Kräfte über die 7 Meere auf 7 Gipfel in 7 Klimazonen zu steigen und dabei auch noch Schulen und andere Projekte zu besuchen um auf die Gefahren der Klimaerwärmung hinzuweisen und eine neue Generation zu inspirieren, lustvoll Verantwortung für unseren Planeten zu übernehmen.
Eine der Schlüsselbotschaften ist,
"Genieße die Natur durch Sport aber gebe der Natur auch etwas zurück indem du sie schützt!"
Hier sieht man auch Dominique (links)und Michael (rechts) auf dem Boot,
die die Strecke bis nach Südafrika mit von der Partie sind 

The TOPtoTOP Global Climate Expedition
connects the various climate zones of each of the seven continents on earth.

Here a brief description which I have borrowed just like that from Michael's blog

• ToptoTop: a Global Climate Expedition – 7 Summits non-stop round-the-world by Human Power and Natures Force. A unique challenge from TOP to TOP and SCHOOL to SCHOOL: A Swiss family together with volunteers share the joy of sport and environmental action to protect the climate with young people all over the world. TOP to TOP is a nonprofit organization of volunteers under the patronage of the United Nations Environment Program.

• The goal of the expedition is to bring awareness of environmental issues, to promote the search for environmentally compatible solutions and to encourage the start of projects beneficial to the environment. An additional objective is to move as many people as possible towards solidarity for the people affected by climate change and to connect people to nature and sport through the ToptoTop Global Climate Expedition.

• The ultimate aim of the expedition is to show practically to children that great things can be achieved in harmony with nature. To achieved this school visits are made by crew members at each destination throughout the expedition. The children are taught passionately about the importance of nature and fun projects are used to help children understand global climate change and the importance of sustainable resources (ToptoTop).

Und das war dann Freitag früh, nachdem Dario gleich einen Unterrichtsbesuch im nahen Rodrigues College absolviert hat, um auch einen kleinen Teil der rodriguischen Jugend über die Möglichkeiten in Kenntnis zu setzen, was alles in Harmonie mit der Umwelt getan werden kann.-

And that was Friday morning, after a morning session at Rodrigues College, to give also some Rodriguan teenagers an idea about what can be achieved globally in harmony with nature.

Eine Visite auf dem Boot gehörte selbstverständlich ebenfalls zum Programm...
Ich hoffe sehr, dass unsere Sport liebenden Kids die Botschaft verstanden haben, dass auch auf unserer Insel die Natur zu schützen ist, die wir für alle möglichen Aktivitäten so großzügig in Anspruch nehmen und genießen. -

A visit on the boat was probably the highlight of the program!
I really hope that our sports loving kids have got the message of how important it is, not to forget to give nature something back for the many activities enjoyed on our lovely island...

Beim Durchsehen der Fotos auf Michaels Notebook nach geeigneten Fotos fiel mir sofort dieses auf, das ich gleich auch mit auf meinem USB Stick kopiert haben wollte, zum einen zeigt es eine liebliche Ansicht von Rodrigues, zum anderen ist es auch Beweis, dass wenigstens ein ganz kleiner Endruck von unserer Insel mitgenommen wird von ToptoTop auf ihrem Weg zur nächsten Klimakonferenz in Durban am 28. November...
Dario habe ich übrigens auch kurz gesehen, mit einer Windel in der Hand sprach er über einen überlebten Grizzlyangriff 1995, doch das wird hoffentlich mal später eine andere Geschichte in meinem anderen Blog...))-

While checking for pics on Michael's notebook, I spontaneously pointed on this one to be copied on my pendrive, first, it shows a lovely sight of Rodrigues, secondly it is proof that at least some impressions of our island will be taken with the crew of ToptoTop on their way to the next Global Climate Conference in Durban, starting on 28 November....
By the way, I also met Dario, with a nappy in his hand, he told me about a grizzly attack he survived in 1995, but this will hopefully one day become a story in my other blog...))

Meet Eitan from New York....Now sailing and on stop in Rodrigues

Heute mal ein etwas anderer Anfang. -

Today I start differently.

Diese Delfinaufnahmen stammen von Eitan Aschner, Begleiter auf seinem Weg nach Rodrigues.-

Und das ist Eitan, gerade mal 25 Jahre alt, den es schon ein wenig durch die Welt verschlagen hat, so arbeitete er zuletzt in Singapore, ich traf ihn letzte Woche an der Bücherei.-

And this is Eitan Aschner, a young guy at age 25, who I met last week at the library. He has seen quite a bit of the world already, recently he worked in Singapore.

Nach Rodrigues kam er auf dem Segelboot "S/Y Conversations", zusammen mit den Kanadiern Cress und Irena, die ihn eingeladen hatten, sie auf ihrem Turn zu begleiten. Gestartet wurde in Singapore und es soll wenigstens bis Südafrika oder Brasilíen gehen.

He has come to Rodrigues on sailing boat "S/Y Conversations", together with the Canadian couple Cress and Irena who had invited him to join them on their turn. They started in Singapore and will at least make it to South Africa or Brazil.

Als ich erfuhr, dass Eitan aus New York kommt, konnte ich nicht umhin ihn zu fragen, wo er war an diesem 11. September. Er war an diesem Tag in der Schule, auch in Manhattan, saß im Mathe-Unterricht, der dann abgebrochen wurde. Sie haben die Ereignisse dann im Fernsehen verfolgt. Er erinnert sich besonders daran, dass er nur wenige Tage zuvor mit einem Freund aus einer anderen Stadt noch auf einem der Twin Tower stand.

Just two days prior to 9/11 and having learnt that Eitan is originally from New York, I had to ask him that question which has been asked and replied by so many people around the globe "Where were you on 9/11 when it happened?" Actually he was at school that day, Maths classes. He was 15 and so he thinks he must have been a 6th grader at that time. His school was in Manhattan but not close to what has become Ground Zero then. He remembers the day quite vividly, they watched it on TV in school and he was shocked. Just 6 days before he had been standing with a friend who had visited New York on top of one of the Towers. He himself did not know any people who had worked at WTC but his parents did.

Eitan, Cress und Irena sind nicht die Einzigen hier, die es mit dem Segelboot nach Rodrigues verschlagen hat, zum Zeitpunkt des Gesprächs mit ihm lagen 11 Boote im Hafen...

Happy Birthday, Lloyd and to all born on 9/11!

Das ist Lloyd aus Bremerhaven und er ist nicht an einem 11. September geboren...-

That is Lloyd from Bremerhaven in Germany and he was not born on a 11th of September...

So wie der Bär heißt aber dieser Junge aus Rodrigues, der heute vor 10 Jahren um 21 Uhr auf unserer Insel geboren wurde, weit ab von den Ereignissen in New York. Und ihm möchte ich heute von ganzem Herzen gratulieren und ihm alles Gute wünschen!-

But Lloyd, the polar bear shares at least his name with this young boy who actually was born 10 years ago on 9/11 at 9pm on our island, far away from the events in New York. And I don't want to miss the occasion to wish him all the best!

Meine Wünsche gelten auch allen anderen Kindern, die an diesem Tag geboren wurden, so wie diesen, die in dem Buch Faces Of Hope vorgestellt wurden, ein Kind aus jedem US-Staat ist hier präsentiert.-

My wishes go out to all kids born on this day as those depicted here in the book Faces of Hope, 50 children, each one representing one US-State.

Leider kann ein Mädchen aus diesem Buch heute nicht ihren Geburtstag feiern, und für ihre Eltern wird dies ein ganz besonders schwerer Tag werden. Christine Taylor Green wurde am 8. Januar diesen Jahres zusammen mit noch 5 anderen Menschen bei einem Anschlag in Tucson getötet. -

Unfortunately one girl presented in this book can't celebrate her birthday today, and for her parents it will certainly be a very difficult day. Christine Taylor Green was one of the 6 victims killed earlier this year on 8 January in Tucson when a gunman opened fire on Congress Woman Gabrielle Gifford and 19 other people.

I am sure, Christina Taylor won't be forgotten today...

9/11 - In Memoriam Bill Biggart

Leidenschaft für News kostete einem Fotografen sein Leben

Am 11. September 2001 ging der freischaffende Fotograf Bill Biggart mit seiner Frau Wendy Doremus und seinen Hunden in der Nähe von Downtown Manhattan spazieren. Ein wenig nach 8.45 Uhr bemerkten sie eine ungewöhnliche Staubwolke am klaren blauen Himmel. Jemand auf der Straße schrie, dass gerade ein Flugzeug das World Trade Center getroffen hat.
Biggart rannte nach Hause um seine Kamera zu holen. Doremus rief Biggart an, nachdem der erste Tower zusammenbrach. Er sagte: " Ich bin sicher, ich bin bei den Feuerwehrmännern und ich treffe dich in 20 Minuten." Er schaffte es nicht die Verabredung einzuhalten.
Vier Tage später erfährt seine Frau, dass Bill's Körper in den Trümmern nahe des 2. Towers gefunden wurde.
Biggart, 54, war der einzige arbeitende Journalist, der getötet wurde, als er den terroristischen Anschlag dokumentieren wollte. Rettungsmannschaften fanden Biggart's 3 Kameras, 2 Kamerataschen, Notizen, Presseausweise, den Ehering und andere persönlichen Gegenstände. Die Kameras enthielten ca. 300 Fotos, die Biggart an diesem Morgen geschossen hat. Etwas von den Filmen war zerstört, aber Digital Bilder von seiner Canon D30 überlebten. ...

This is the very last photograph Bill Biggart ever took. From the angle of the picture and eyewitnesses' accounts, it seems Biggart was standing under a pedestrian bridge that linked the World Trade Center to the World Financial Center, to the west of the towers. After taking this picture of the remains of the south tower -- perhaps the first ever made of the famous, ghostly, leaning shards of the tower's facade -- Biggart saw that the north tower was about to collapse, and stopped a group of police officers about to enter the area to look for survivors. As debris showered down around them, Biggart and the officers ran for the safety of the World Financial Center. Biggart was the last in line. When the cloud of dust had settled, the officers took a head count. Biggart hadn't made it. "Bill is responsible for saving those [police officers'] lives," Chip East says. But East also says that his friend probably didn't experience a moment's hesitation. "He wasn't there because it was dangerous. He was there because the story needed to be told well."
