Nach dem Jahr des Büffels, ist es also nun Zeit für den Tiger ...-
After the Year of the Ox, it's now time for the tiger !

Und dieses Jahr noch dazu am Valentinstag, ein eher belustigendes Detail, wenn man bedenkt, dass laut traditionellem chinesischen Glaubens Hochzeiten im Jahr des Tigers eher vermieden werden sollten...-

And this year even on Valentine's Day, a rather odd detail considering Chinese traditional belief that in a Year of the Tiger, marriage should better be avoided....

" For many Chinese, the Year of the Tiger promises to roar in more economic prowess and global clout for their country, but couples planning to get married are better off waiting until 2011.

Ob hier auf Rodrigues und in Mauritius das neue Jahr auch ungewaschen beginnt, kann ich nicht sagen, wohl aber dass mit Chinakrachern, nur die roten selbstverständlich, die alten Geister vertrieben werden. Und neben Kirchgang am Morgen, gehört gutes Essen in der Familie auf jeden Fall zum Muss, Huhn für die Gesundheit und ein langes Leben, Fisch für den Überfluss, Glück und Einigkeit, Gemüse für die Intelligenz und den Erfolg, was Lernen anbetrifft...Nicht fehlen darf auf keinen Fall der chinesische Neujahrskuchen aus Reismehl, Rohzucker und Orangenschale...

If here on Rodrigues and on Mauritius the Spring Festival starts too by being unwashed, I don't know with certainty, but I can confirm the use of Chinese crackers, the reds only, in order to chase the old spirits of the precedent year. And beside a compulsory visit of the mass, eating is an important issue. Chicken symbolises health and a long life, fish stands for abundance, luck and unity, whereas vegetables should be eaten for intelligence and success in studies...The traditional New Year's cake made by rice flour, brown sugar and orange zest is a must also in Rodrigues.

Recette du gâteau la cire

Ingrédients
3 livres de poudre de riz (glutinous rice)
4 ¼ tasses d’eau
Sucre roux
Zestes d’orange

Préparation - Passez les zestes d’orange et le sucre au mixeur. Il vous faudra 6 cuillères de cette mixture - Préparez du caramel en mélangeant une demi-livre de sucre avec ¼ tasse d’eau - Mélangez les 3 livres de riz, 4 ¼ tasses d’eau, 600 - 750 grammes de sucre et la mixture de pelure d’orange - Ensuite, incorporez le caramel pour la couleur - Mettez la pâte à poser pendant une heure - Puis, placez une feuille de plastique dans des récipients ou des moules avant d’y verser la pâte - Faites cuire la préparation au bain marie pendant au moins 6 heures à feu doux après ébullition - Laissez refroidir et dégustez
Und wie ist es nun um den wirklichen Tiger bestellt? Da kann man nur hoffen, dass es nicht nur im jetzigen Jahr des Tigers zu mehr Anstrengungen kommt, dieses vom Aussterben bedrohte Tier zu schützen. Laut WWF gibt es nur noch insgesamt ca. 3200 Tiger auf der Welt, vom Südchinesischen Tiger gibt es nicht mehr als maximal 30 Exemplare.

And as to the real tiger, one can only hope that not only during this year more will be done to protect this beautiful but endangered animal. "According to conservation group WWF, there are about as few as 3,200 tigers left in the world". Concerning the species living in the south of China, there are only 20 to 30 tigers left.
