Fête du Poisson 2012 - Nachlese....Update

Die Fête du Poisson ist zwar vorbei, aber das Fischen geht weiter bis zum 30. September. Für alle Neugierigen, wieviel denn gefangen wurde am Tag der Eröffnung, hier sind die Zahlen: Insgesamt 3850 kg Fisch ging in die Netze, neben dem begehrten Traditionsfisch Mullet auch Cordonier und Capitaine.Sechs Kooperativen waren dieses Jahr mit von der Partie, eine private, sowie fünf, die zwar in unterschiedlichen Gebieten, aber unter dem Dach eines Verbunds arbeiten. Die Kooperative in Port Sud Est mit 13 Fischern war dieses Jahr nicht mit dabei, sie haben mittlerweile, Mitte März, gegen eine Kompensationssumme von Rs 70,000 ihre Netze abgegeben und wollen sich ggf. auf das Fischen außerhalb der Lagune konzentrieren.-

The fish festival is already an event from the past, but net fishing still continues until 30 September.For all who are curious concerning the quantity caught on 1st of March, please find here the figures.In total 3,850 KG went into the nets, beside Mullet, the synonym for the fish marking the tradition, also Capitaine and Cordonier was caught.Six cooperatives took part, a private one and five operating under the roof of one association, although located in different regions.Not present this year was the cooperative of Port South East with 13 fishermen, they were inmidst of discussions for an eventual stop of net fishing which was finalised mid March, compensated by an allocation of Rs 70,000 as incentive to concentrate on fishing outside of the lagoon.

Von insgesamt 14 Kooperativen haben somit in den letzten Jahren, 8 bereits ihre Netze abgegeben, 6 allein in den Jahren bis 2005, ein deutliches Zeichen, dass auch die Fischer  sehen, dass es so mit dem Zustand der Lagune nicht weitergehen kann und es langfristig darum geht, langfristig die Lagune zu entlasten, sodass sich der Fischbestand wieder erholen kann.Die Schaffung des Marineparks mit kontrollierten Zonen zum Fischen in Port Sud Est ist gleichfalls ein wichtiger Schritt.-

Of 14 cooperatives in total, 8 have already stopped net-fishing, 6 of them already in the years until 2005, a clear sign that even the fishermen don't see any alternatives than working on the recovery of the lagoon so that in the long run the fish stock can recover.The creation of marine parks with controlled zones for fishing as already started in Port Sud Est is another important step in this direction.

Früher wurden oft am Eröffnungstag der Netzfischsaison um die 7000 Pfund Fisch pro Kooperative gefangen, heute schafft man kaum 1400 Pfund, ein klares Zeichen für den dramatischen Rückgang des Fischbestands, auch wenn das diesjährige Wetter am 1. März sicher mit eine Rolle gespielt hat bei der bescheidenen Ausbeute.-

Some years ago about 7000 pounds of fish landed in the nets of one cooperative only, today 1400 pounds is already difficult to catch, a clear sign for the depletion of stocks , although bad weather conditions as experienced this year have had an impact too considering these poor figures.

Hier einige Zahlen der letzten Jahre, die den Trend deutlich zeigen; so wurden 2008 insgesamt in der Saison 1359.4 t gefangen, 2009 waren es 1229.5 t und im Jahr 2010 bereits nur noch 1,192.3 t. Die Zahlen für 2011 lagen noch nicht vor.-
 
Here some figures for the annual catches during the past years showing a clear trend: in 2008  a total of 1,359.4 t were caught, in 2009  1,229.5 t and in 2010  1,192.3 t. The figures for 2011 are not yet available.

Die hier dargestellte Verschmutzung ist ein Faktor für den Zustand der Lagune, wesentlich sind aber vor allem Überfischung und illegales Fischen, welches über viele Jahre wenig bis gar nicht kontrolliert wurde.Dies betrifft neben dem Netzfischen auch das Fischen von Tintenfisch. Es war und ist immer noch nicht einfach wirkliche Alternativen für die betroffenen Fischer und Fischerinnen aufzuzeigen. Algen- und Aquakultur sollen in Zukunft entwickelt werden, für das Fischen außerhalb der Lagune stehen mittlerweile Boote zur Verfügung und erste Gruppen von Fischern wurden bereits diesbezüglich  "umgeschult".-

The pollution here represented is one factor for the condition of the lagoon, but especially significant are overfishing and illegal fishing, which for many years have not been sufficiently controlled.  Overfishing affects beside net fishing also the fishing for squid. It was and it is still not easy to identify and to create real alternatives for the fishermen and fisherwomen concerned. Algae and aquaculture will be developed in future, and as for the fishing outside the lagoon there are now boats available and first groups of fishermen have been "retrained" for this purpose.

Bleibt für die Bevölkerung von Rodrigues und zukünftige Generationen zu hoffen, dass all diese Maßnahmen der Lagune und dem Riff helfen sich zu erholen, erfolgreich sind!-

So just let's hope that in the long term all these measures will contribute to a healthy lagoon and reef, the population of Rodrigues and future generations depend on it!
