24 countries across the Indian Ocean have been on tsunami alert after a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicentre was 33 kilometres beneath the ocean floor, more than 430 kilometres from Indonesia's Aceh province.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.Mauritius was included in the list too.Hours after the quake there are no reports of a threatening tsunami developing.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake that struck the same region on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, most of them in Aceh.
