COVID -19 : Wo Impfen belohnt wird....Vaccination Incentives: Between Joints and Blue Whales in the USA

When children's dreams come true ...: Vaccination under the whale

With all city-run vaccination sites now open for walk-in appointments, New Yorkers have no shortage of possible places to get jabbed. And while venue shopping for life-saving inoculations is a bit like demanding a specific lifeguard while drowning at sea, there is no denying the fact that New York City's hottest new vaccine hub is the American Museum of Natural History.

That place has everything. Most crucially the Moderna vaccine, but also a suspended model of a blue whale sporting a massive band aid, and a COVID-19 vaccination sticker featuring said whale. While you're there, may even spot this persuasive T-Rex.

The museum's famed Milstein Hall of Ocean Life became home to city's newest vaccination hub on Friday, with plenty of appointments open for all adult New Yorkers, you can also try your luck as a walk-in. Public housing residents and public employees will have appointments set aside for them, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Dakota, an East Village resident and regular at the museum, said she got an email on Thursday about the vaccine site and jumped at the opportunity. "I’m kind of glad I waited until this opened," she told Gothamist, shortly after getting her shot. "It was fun to be under the whale."

De Blasio, Congressman Jerry Nadler, and Neil deGrasse Tyson were also on hand for the opening occasion on Friday. As was Celeste Carballo, an exhibition preparator at the museum, who was tasked with designing the 6' x 2' felt and cotton Band-Aid now affixed to the whale.

“They said keep this under the wraps, literally, and make a giant Band-Aid for the whale's flipper," Carballo said.

The bandage's creation took five days, and Carballo revealed that the dots on the bandage were airbrushed. "We were debating what size was the right size, and we decided to go big or go home!" she laughed. "So we went with the bigger size."

"One day you're asked to make a giant Band-Aid, and the other day you might be helping to make a life-sized model of a Tyrannosarus Rex," Carballo said. "I feel very honored to be part of the museum's history, New York's history."

The goal of placing the vaccination site at the museum, the mayor said, was to entice New Yorkers who might be reticent about the vaccine with the bragging rights of getting dosed at an iconic cultural institution. Recipients will also get a voucher for complimentary museum admission for up to four people—and the coveted sticker.

"Someone said they read about it in the papers and the minute they saw it they said I'm going to go there to get vaccinated," de Blasio said. "The second they saw you could get vaccinated beneath the blue whale they said: 'I'm going to do that. I'm dropping everything."

Impfen versüßt...-

But there are also sweet options....Donuts as vaccination incentive

But if you now think that this is all you come up with to help those who don't like vaccinations, you have not heard anything about the fact that certain states do not just want to convince with donuts as a reward ...-

After the first wave of vaccinations, states lure with curious incentives. What they offer those who don't like vaccinations - and what it looks like in Germany.

While many people in Germany long for a quick vaccination against Corona, other countries are already trying to lure those who are not vaccinated with special incentives to inject. Whether cash vouchers in Russia, joints or donuts in the USA or much greater freedom for those who have been vaccinated - many countries try to convince all citizens to be vaccinated.

Vaccination is considered the most important key in fighting the pandemic. However, this is only successful when at least 70 to 85 percent of the population has been vaccinated - and herd immunity occurs. But so far no country has reached this level. According to a survey, three quarters of people in Germany are willing to be vaccinated.

Even in the USA, where the vaccination rate is particularly high, only 55 percent of the population have currently received at least one vaccination dose. According to surveys, one in five adults in the United States does not want to be vaccinated. To attract these skeptics, too, companies, states, and even museums are resorting to special temptations. What do they look like?

  • The US state of West Virginia rewards all the younger ones with a security voucher worth 100 US dollars (around 83 euros). This gift is available to all 16 to 35 year olds who are vaccinated against corona. Even those who have already been vaccinated in this age group will receive the voucher retrospectively.
  • The American donut chain Krispy Kreme rewards each vaccinated person with a donut on the day of vaccination if they show their vaccination certificate. Many other companies in New York are giving away cheesecakes or hot dogs on vaccination day.
  • In Germany, too, there will soon be easing for fully vaccinated people. Just like those who have recovered or who have been tested, they should be able to go to the hairdresser or go shopping without a quick test. There will be further relief when traveling. According to the "Lebensmittelzeitung" newspaper, Edeka Nord wants to be the first retailer in Germany to increase its employees' willingness to vaccinate with a bonus in the form of a shopping voucher of 50 euros.
  • The Natural History Museum in New York offers everyone the opportunity to be vaccinated under the 30-meter-long replica of a blue whale. Afterwards, the vaccinated can visit the museum free of charge.
  • Marijuana friends lure New York with free joints for those who get vaccinated. The campaign is supported, among other things, by lobby groups that campaign for the legalization of cannabis in other states.
  • The US health authority CDC has withdrawn the mask requirement for fully vaccinated people in public. This new freedom from masks could be followed by further simplifications for all vaccinated persons. For example, immunized Americans should be allowed to travel to Europe in the summer.
  • In Russia, people over 60 receive a voucher worth 1,000 rubles (around eleven euros) after their first vaccination. You can redeem this in selected shops, pharmacies and cafes.

To be honest with you, for me the most surprising incentive was this one, so it's mentioned here, although on a personal note - getting vaccinated seems to me already the biggest incentive in itself. However, being vaccinated under the whale could still top it!

Earthquake off Mauritius: nothing to tremble

On Wednesday May 12, around 6 p.m., earthquakes were recorded off Mauritius - Réunion, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) site. The epicenter of the earthquake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale (out of 10), was located 10 km deep. While earthquakes are frequent in the region, it is the highest magnitude on record so far.

What is causing the earthquakes in the region? “This earthquake was located on the central Indian ridge. It is a zone of divergence of oceanic plates that regularly generates earthquakes, "explains Valérie Ferrazzini, seismologist at the volcanological observatory of Piton de la Fournaise, Institut de physique du Globe de Paris.

Oceanographer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo talks about the accumulation of energy in the lithosphere. “Rodrigues sits a few hundred kilometers from the mediocre oceanic ridge of the Indian Ocean and the Triple Junction, the point where three oceanic plates collide. This backbone is very active and causes energy build-ups and releases that cause earthquakes. "

Prem Saddul, geomorphologist, agrees. He explains that Mauritius is in the middle of the Somali Plate, quite far from the Triple Junction, which connects the Indo-Australian, African and Antarctic Plates while Rodrigues Island is close. These are divergent plates. “When the plates diverge, there are magmatic rises which form underwater mountain ranges. It is these climbs that generate the tremors that are felt in the Rodrigues region. Before an impending eruption of Piton de la Fournaise on Reunion Island, there is a 'magmatic tremor'. "

"Rodrigues, being closer to the Triple Junction, records 12-14 tremors each year in the east of the island, with a magnitude of 3.5-5 on the Richter scale," explains the geomorphologist. According to him, a magnitude of 6.7 is quite consistent but still remains moderate.

Tremor attenuated by magma

Prem Saddul, who has undertaken studies on volcanism and tectonic plate movements in our region, points out that with magmatic surges, the tremors are attenuated because the magma absorbs the shocks. Reason why Mauritius will not be affected by earthquakes. “We are still at the level of the tremors. Diverging plates do not cause earthquakes as they do along converging plates as in the region of Indonesia. It’s not a rare occurrence. ”

To add that when he was the chairman of the Mauritius Oceanographic Institute (MOI), he set up a committee bringing together the organization, the Ministry of the Environment and the Meteorological Station in order to install seismographs in Agalega, Mauritius and Rodrigues, to capture the waves of the tremors in the region. "With Reunion, which already has seismographs, we were networking with the islands of the Indian Ocean."

The geomorphologist claims that the Somali plate is moving westward at a speed of 4 cm per year and that there is a hot spot just below the active volcano of La Fournaise when before it was under the Piton des Neiges. “If Reunion Island and Mauritius are moving west at a speed of 3 to 4 cm per year, the hot spot will be east of La Fournaise. Suddenly, an island will emerge. When it will emerge, it will create tremors… ”

Very little risk of tsunamis

With a magnitude 6.7, are we safe from a tsunami in Mauritius? Prem Saddul claims that tsunamis are generated by earthquakes beneath the submarine crust, near the edges of the converging plates. “A tsunami is caused by an abrupt rupture of the earth's crust. As the divergent plate has cracks, it emits only small shock waves which cannot generate tsunamis. ”

Nonetheless, he believes a magnitude of 6.7 is still worrisome, hence the need for a network to monitor any tectonic movement in the area. Seismologist Valérie Ferrazzini agrees. According to her, the triggering of a tsunami depends on several factors, including the mechanism behind the earthquake and its magnitude. She believes that in the case of a ridge, it is very unlikely to have a mechanism capable of generating a tsunami, (ground displacement is mainly in the horizontal plane).

“In addition, it is estimated that an earthquake can trigger a tsunami if it is of a magnitude greater than 7. You must realize that a magnitude 7 earthquake is 30 times more energetic than a magnitude 6 earthquake and magnitudes 7 are rare on the ridges. There is therefore very little risk of a tsunami for Mauritius. To observe a tsunami, the earthquake would have to occur in Indonesia and the tsunami would be small in magnitude. ”

But oceanographer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo has a different opinion. He believes that no island in the Indian Ocean is immune to a tsunami caused by a regional or more distant earthquake. "Indeed, an earthquake of this magnitude can cause submarine landslides which can cause tsunamis."

Five seismic activities in the Mauritius region between 1786 and 1925

According to historical documents from the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM), five seismic activities were felt in the region of Mauritius, between 1786 and 1925. Their location is not known due to the lack of seismometers in the region. According to the USGS, the oceanic region of southwest India showed general seismicity, mainly concentrated around Mayotte, Madagascar and to the west along the Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge.

On February 27, 2018, seismic activity with a magnitude of 4.1 was recorded about 100 km southwest of Le Morne. On November 12, 2019 at 8:02 p.m., an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8, 216 km, east of Bois-des-Amourettes was noted.

According to Prem Saddul, these two earthquakes are located near a fossil fault along the east coast of Mauritius, from northeast to southwest. "The fossil fault could represent a seismically locked system that has started releasing energy in the form of earthquakes," the geomorphologist points out.

While Mauritius, Agalega and Rodrigues are equipped with seismic stations, Montanger et al. (2–8 April 2012), in a document entitled “Report of the Expert Committee on Seismic and Tsunamic Risks in Mauritius and Rodrigues Island” and submitted to the Prime Minister's office, had issued recommendations for St .-Brandon to be also provided with a seismic station to help identify currently active tectonic features and weak areas.

On September 21, 2020, an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on the Richter scale occurred about 22 km northwest of St.-Denis, in La Réunion, and about 200 km to the west. southwest of Port-Louis. What made the Mauritians tremble ... The depth of the earthquake was about 27 km ...

End of Ramadan 2021 - Despite all Covid-19 restrictions: Happy Eid to all our friends!!!

Since we could see the new moon yesterday and we had already arrived on the 30th day of the fasting month of Ramadan, the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated today. Fasting has come to an end, the young visit the old, the children get sweets, which is why people in Germany speak of the sugar festival, and of course nothing works without dates, which were also present during the fast, because Muslims across the world break their Ramadan fast with a date as it was guided by the Prophet.-

More about dates and their health benefits you will find here

März an mauritische Regierungsbeamte übergeben.

Fifty tons of dates were already handed over to Mauritian government officials before the month of Ramadan on 25 March. This donation was made by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Reflief Center. These dates will be distributed to "vulnerable families across the country during the holy month of Ramadan," said a statement issued Thursday by the Mauritian government.

Saudi Arabia donates dates to Mauritius every year and the Government of Mauritius will ensure that the dates are fairly distributed among the community across the country.

Ahmed Abdulaziz M. Bin Salamah, expressed his satisfaction for this donation as a present from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to all friendly countries around the world. “Mauritius is one of those privileged countries”.  -

After the arrival of the dates a ceremony was held at the Agricultural Marketing Board in Moka, in the presence of the Consul General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Mauritius, Ahmed Abdulaziz M. Bin Salamah.

Saudi Arabia is allowing tens of thousands of Muslims to visit Mecca and Medina during Ramadan, as long as they obtain digital health passes.

Muslim pilgrims reached Islam’s holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the first day of the fasting month of Ramzan. It was announced earlier this month that only pilgrims ‘immunised’ against Covid-19 will be permitted to attend the Umrah pilgrimage and prayers.

The hajj and umrah ministry said in a statement that three categories of people would be considered "immunised" -- those who have received two doses of the vaccine, those administered a single dose at least 14 days prior, and people who have recovered from the infection.Only those people will be eligible for permits to perform umrah, as well as to attend prayers in the Grand Mosque in the holy city of  Mecca , the condition also applies for entry into the Prophet's Mosque in the holy city of Medina.

It was not clear whether the policy, which comes amid an uptick in coronavirus infections in the kingdom, would be extended to the annual hajj pilgrimage later this year.

Saudi Arabia had reported by beginning of Ramadan more than 393,000 coronavirus infections and 6,700 deaths from COVID-19. The kingdom's health ministry said it has administered more than five million coronavirus vaccines, in a country with a population of over 34 million.

Last month, King Salman replaced the hajj minister, months after the kingdom hosted the smallest hajj in modern history due to the pandemic. Mohammad Benten was relieved from his post and replaced by Essam bin Saeed, according to a royal decree published by official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The kingdom hosted the hajj in late July last year. Only 10,000 Muslim residents of Saudi Arabia itself were allowed to take part, a far cry from the 2.5 million Muslims from around the world who participated in 2019. It is unclear how many pilgrims will be allowed for hajj this year.According to the pro-government Okaz newspaper, only vaccinated pilgrims will likely be permitted this year.

In a relaxation of coronavirus curbs last October, Saudi Arabia opened the Grand Mosque for prayers for the first time in seven months and partially resumed the umrah pilgrimage. The umrah usually attracts millions of Muslims from across the globe each year.Authorities said the umrah will be allowed to return to full capacity once the threat of the pandemic has abated.-

Not only Covid-19 has been impacting Ramadan, on 27 April the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia has been hit by flash flooding after heavy rains all over southern Saudi Arabia.Torrential floods washed away cars and people in Mecca on Tuesday following heavy rain and thunderstorm.

A sudden storm during the afternoon caused flooding across the city. Images and videos shared on Social Media showed streets were inundated and vehicles swept away by fast-flowing flood waters. Saudi Civil Defence said it has been assisting in affected areas in the city of Mecca (also Makkah) and areas of Mecca Region, including the rescue of motorists in vehicles trapped in flood water.

Despite all obstacles and the pandemic....

Happy Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim friends...!
