Laut Medienberichten erwägt die Trump-Regierung den direkten Kauf der Chagos-Inseln von Mauritius. Laut The Telegraph war es US-Finanzminister Scott Bessent, der diesen Plan ausgeheckt hat, mit dem Ziel der dauerhaften und ausschließlichen Kontrolle über den strategisch wichtigen britisch-amerikanischen Militärstützpunkt auf Diego Garcia.
US-Militärs befürchten Spionagegefahren durch Chinas enge Beziehungen zu China, zudem gewinnt Diego Garcia durch den aktuellen militärischen Konflikt mit dem Iran massiv an strategischer Bedeutung für Langstreckenraketen.
Die britische Regierung unter Premierminister Keir Starmer hatte 2025 ein Abkommen zur Übertragung der Souveränität an Mauritius unterzeichnet und gleichzeitig einen 99-jährigen Pachtvertrag für den Betrieb des Stützpunkts auf Diego Garcia gesichert. Dieses Abkommen wurde jedoch auf unbestimmte Zeit auf Eis gelegt, nachdem US-Präsident Donald Trump seine Unterstützung zurückgezogen und die Übertragung als „große Dummheit“ scharf kritisiert hatte.
Der Präsident unterstützte zunächst Starmers Abkommen zur Abtretung der Inseln, verwarf es jedoch, nachdem Sir Keir sich geweigert hatte, den USA die Nutzung von Diego Garcia für Angriffe auf den Iran in den ersten Kriegsstunden zu gestatten.
Die Labour-Partei hatte gehofft, 2025 ein Gesetz zur Übergabe der Inseln an Mauritius verabschieden zu können, kann das Abkommen jedoch ohne die Zustimmung der USA nicht ratifizieren und die Inseln somit nicht an Mauritius übergeben.
Die Lage von Diego Garcia würde den Iran in Reichweite bringen und rund um die Uhr Langstreckenbombereinsätze ermöglichen, wie beispielsweise den Angriff auf Teheran mit B-2 Spirit-Stealth-Bombern.
Über den Preis für die Chagos-Inseln wurde noch nicht verhandelt. Großbritannien plante ursprünglich, die Inseln an Mauritius zu übergeben und anschließend rund 35 Milliarden Pfund (46,7 Milliarden US-Dollar) für 99 Jahre zu zahlen, um den Militärstützpunkt zurückzupachten.
Um die Kontrolle über die Inseln zu erlangen, müsste Washington zunächst Starmers Abkommen zustimmen und anschließend nach der Souveränitätsübertragung mit den Mauritiern verhandeln.-
The Trump administration is exploring a proposal to directly purchase the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, a move aimed at securing permanent and exclusive control over the strategically vital UK-US military base on Diego Garcia.
The Alternative Proposal: The US purchase is currently one of several internal policy options drafted by White House officials, prompted by concerns over the UK's previous plan to hand the islands' sovereignty over to Mauritius.
Senior US officials fear that ceding full sovereignty to Mauritius could pose surveillance and security threats to the heavily utilized base, especially given Mauritius' diplomatic ties with China and Iran.
The British government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer had previously signed a deal to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while securing a 99-year lease to maintain the Diego Garcia base. However, this legislation was shelved indefinitely after US President Donald Trump withdrew his support, harshly criticizing the transfer as an act of "great stupidity".
The president initially supported Sir Keir’s deal to give the islands
away, but then chose to scuttle it after Sir Keir refused to allow the
US to use Diego Garcia to carry out strikes on Iran in the opening hours
of the war.
Labour had hoped to pass a bill to give the islands
to Mauritius in 2025, but it cannot ratify the deal and hand the islands
over to Mauritius without US consent.
Diego Garcia’s location would put Iran within striking distance and allow for round-the-clock, long-range bomber missions, such as the strike on Tehran using B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.
A price for the Chagos Islands has not yet been discussed. Britain initially planned to give the islands to Mauritius and then pay around £35bn ($46.7bn) for 99 years to lease back the military base.
To take control of the islands, Washington would first have to allow Sir Keir’s deal to go through, then negotiate with the Mauritians once sovereignty had been transferred.

Die mauritische Regierung hat diese Berichte entschieden zurückgewiesen und erklärt, ihre Souveränität über den Chagos-Archipel sei nicht verhandelbar. Darüber hinaus stellten mauritische Beamte klar, dass sie keine offiziellen Kaufangebote direkt von der US-Regierung erhalten hätten.-
And what does Mauritius say about Trump's plans?
The Mauritian government has firmly rejected these reports, stating that its sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is non-negotiable. Furthermore, Mauritian officials have clarified that they have not received any official purchase offers directly from the US administration.
