Sad & Somehow Disturbing News - RIP Farah Fawcett & Michael Jackson

You’re always running here and there
You feel you’re not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don’t like what you find
There’s something you should know
You’ve got a place to go...

Farewell to both of you, RIP Farrah Fawcett, RIP Michael Jackson...

That is how Ile Hermitage looks usually, a little island in the south of Rodrigues inmidst a gigantic lagoon. In the past, only 3 times sailing yachts came here from Port Mathurin to spend a couple of days in tranquility, compared to the usual huzzle in the capital.

It's quiet here, just a few fishermen collecting their weirs, "casiers" as they are called here...

While we all were anchoring, some busy hands on Hermitage were already setting up everything for the BBQ later in the evening...

Setting over by dinghy in the dark, although only a short distance, was somewhat an experience, the lagoon was a bit rough, so it was a good feeling to arrive where the party was already in full swing...Here just a few pics from the evening...Tory Elshove & Piet Hein from S/Y Double Dutch (South Africa) who got lots of kisses for borrowing me that yellow wind and weather gear...Hideshige Seki from S/Y Polaire (Japan), Anthony Burice from S/Y Grain de Sable (UK) & Phillippe Thiebaut, guest on S/Y Mary Ann but belonging to our crew on Polaire for this regatta....(And guess who is the yellow person in the back ...) Manuel from Rodrigues, local crew member on S/Y Mary Ann together with Stephane Gosselin ( same boat)...The long smiling guy beside our Japanese friend is John from Australia, his boat S/Y Millenium was the winner of the first leg...The nice lady in white is Nat Sukanya from Thailand, crew member of Millenium, the lady in blue is Duan Chomnguluean, also from Thailand but crew member of the French boat S/Y Hirondelle...Beside lots of food (thanks to Sylvestre), drinks and exchange there was music too, provided by local musicians (here Miko on the guitar) ......and guests...William, who joined Hirondelle for the regatta instead of his own boat S/Y Anuska, turned out to be just great on the trumpet! It was an unforgettable evening......next morning only few were getting busy early...

Around Rodrigues Cup 2009 - What an event!!!

Back since yesterday night, by the way, after a great closing party... - 3 days which I will certainly not forget so quickly. Still lots of photos to be checked, so for today only a few pics from the first leg on Saturday...Zum Regattaauftakt gab es einen unglaublich schönen Regenbogen zu sehen...(Darunter übrigens eins der nicht teilnehmenden Boote)

Leaving the harbour on Saturday morning to get to the starting line, a wonderful rainbow bid us farewell...(Here you see one of the 3 boats left behind in the harbour, the French couple in there was just too tired after 37 days on sea from Thailand. A second boat left Rodrigues on Saturday afternoon and as the third boat was just not fit for a regatta, the owner participated as crew on another boat.) So 8 boats out of remaining 11 were in...!
But the blue sky on pic 1 is treacherous, I can tell you, the clouds you can see here, didn't leave us most of the time..
As so some rain...not easy not only for the boat with the press...

Thanks to Double Dutch I looked most of the time like a thick yellow egg, but their heavy weather gear protected me well against all elements, so I was fine...Double Duch, here still before the starting line and close behind us, got later on problems with one sail...Und Hirondelle verlor Zeit durch einen Anker...-
A

Just much more waves and wind than forecasted, and with the wind against us, a much harder leg than expected...Seasickness was an issue on most of the boats, and not only Rodriguan participants were concerned...(Hehe, I know what you all are thinking right now, but no, just to make up for a certain clumsiness, I have at least not been seasick, by the way I have never been it so far...)

A
rriving at Port Sud Est, we were guided by Benoit and Eric by boat and VHF, a security service appreciated by all boats, as that area is a tricky one and GPS maps like Seamap doesn't correspond exactly...Auch die Coastguard war zu Stelle...
The Coastguard too sent a delegation...Hier Grain de Sable hinter uns...-
Here Grain de Sable behind us...Die ersten Boote ankern bereits, als wir reinkommen...-
The first boats are anchoring already when we get in...

Stephane and Manuel from Mary Ann already busy...they take the time of the boats...

Here, by the way, in the background the winner of the first leg...it is Millenium from Australia, they made it in just 3 hours and 4 minutes (after handicap correction) ...

Mary Ann made it in second position (3 hours 24 minutes)...

It is on Mary Ann where we meet for a first drink after the regatta...(here Benoit, the guide)

Polaire, the Japanese boat, arrived on sixth position in 4 hours 22 minutes, here "my" skipper Hide...-

..
.and Dominique & Philippe (originally belonging to the crew of Mary Ann), who were assigned to us when our second Rodriguan crew did not show up on Saturday morning, they were great and did really a good a job!

Our friends from Double Dutch made it in 6 hours 33 minutes, they even had the privilege to be guided by two kite surfers...Something that sweetened certainly the fact of having been the latest...
))

All results for the first leg here:
1. Millenium 03:04:09
2. Mary Ann 03:24:39
3. Grain de Sable 03:39:39
4. Tantrum 03:50:02
5. Dutch Touch 04:01:23

Around Rodrigues Cup 2009- Briefing Of Participants...

Today at 6pm all participants of the Cup were briefed by Olivier (who you know already, the one who was not a pirate) and by Stephane from S/Y Mary-Ann, who you can see here...Charts, weather forecast and instructions were given to the 8 participating yachts, some of them met also their local "crews" for the first time. It was a nice gathering at La Residence, sure some rhum included...Here Yvonne from Germany who arrived this week with the English man Anthony on S/Y Grain de Sable...It turned out that Peter and Linda from S/Y Dutch Touch have already been in competition with S/Y Mary-Ann during the ARC in 2002 which started in the Canaries, Mary-Ann made it with one day in advance to Dutch Touch then, source for some joking...
And here is "my" skipper for the next days, Mr. Hideshige Seki from Japan of S/Y Polaire who has been sailing now already for 3 years single-handed...(I hope he can adjust to having 2 left hands more on board...)More about him, his boat and his voyage you can hopefully read next week, I have to go to bed now and my bag has still to be packed, with all the rain at the moment I am a bit clueless about what to let at home...:))

You will find more about the regatta and all participants after the event, just here the names of the other boats: S/Y Hirondelle (F), S/Y Mllenium (AUS), S/Y Tantrum (AUS) and S/Y Double Dutch from South Africa...

And here the official details...Around Rodrigues Cup 2009

And here again the details...

Around Rodrigues Cup 2009 - Don't miss it !!!

For the first time in Rodrigues history, a sailing regatta will take place from June 20 to 22. It will be done in 3 parts. On Saturday at 9.00 o'clock 8 registered yachts, each with locals on board, will depart from Port Mathurin going east to Ile Hermitage with a BBQ break at Ile Hermitage to join then on Sunday the traditional Rodrigues regatta with locals in the lagoon facing Mourouk Hotel. Monday there will be the longer second leg for the yachts from Grande Passe back to Port Mathurin.

At Grand Baie this event will be closed on Monday evening with a price giving ceremony and a buffet at Cabane de Pêcheurs , for those who would like to join the buffet which is at Rs 500, please contact Sylvestre today (phone:978 5615) .

We wish all participants and observers a great regatta!!!By the way, here you don't see a pirate, it's Olivier from S/Y Mary-Ann busy at organizing some details for the event this Wednesday at the Tourisme Office. Together with some friends he had the idea, considering the many yachts who called at Port Mathurin so far this season. At this time of the year we have never had so many of them in Rodrigues, in a certain way we have "to thank" the pirates, because of their activities in the Indian Ocean a lot of circumnavigators changed course and came here instead of heading to the Seychelles. Their idea was not only well received by the population but also by the Commission of Youth & Sports and the Tourism Office, some sponsors could be found too. This week in the harbour of Port Mathurin...and there are still some not on the photo...

Remembrance: Zouk & Roddy....& a DVD - Please help to support the families of Roddy & Zouk

This is one of the last photos of Zouk and Roddy, taken during one of their last outings with Stephan Kreupl and Klaus Liedtke, the two German sport anglers who could be rescued 9 hours after the accident on March 13, which turned out to be fatal for our Rodriguan friends.

Stephan and Klaus who have been fishing in Rodrigues for a couple of years and known Roddy and Zouk very well, have created a DVD about the Giant Trevally (GT) reef fishing in Rodrigues with Roddy and Zouk this year, the DVD can be purchased via PayPal, the whole amount will be donated to the families of Roddy and Zouk.

"On Friday March 13th 6.30 p.m. local time our skipper Roddy Perrine and his mate Lino (Zouk) Joliecoeur lost their lives in an accident at the Passe Carangue. Klaus Liedtke and Stephan Kreupl were rescued after 9 hours. This is a painful loss for the relatives of Roddy and Zouk and also for all who have ever been fishing with them. Roddy leaves behind a wife and a son, Zouk a wife and two children. We have opened an account for both families and we hope to relieve their financial distress slightly by means of donations and selling of our DVD. You can watch the DVD trailer on our Web site: www.bluewaterfishing.eu under "Movies & Clips". You will find the contact form and the banking details for your DVD-Order under www.mascarene-fishing-team.de. All proceeds are paid into the donation account Roddy & Zouk without deduction of production costs. We have also a PayPal Donate button on our website." (dt.Version/hier)

Vor einer Woche...One week ago...

...hieß es Leinen los...-
...it was time to untie the ropes...
...and to bid farewell to Derry, Quentin, Alex and Jack(red jacket)...
With not only bananas on board...
For Sally and Bruce from the Australian yacht Tantrum it was a very special day, as they had to say good-bye to their son Jack. He was given as additional crew to Derry so that once arrived in Australia, he will be able to sort out all his examination forms of his distance learning program, the Rodriguan Internet was not just the greatest help to get along with it. In a couple of weeks he will be joining them again, then he will take a plane...By the way, it takes about 3 weeks by boat to get from Rodrigues to Australia...
