11 December 1861...First Post Office in Rodrigues...150 Jahre Post in Rodrigues

Warum heute etwas zu Philatelie, Briefmarken und Postämtern? 

Ganz einfach, am 9. Oktober diesen Jahres hat die Mauritische Post im Zusammenhang mit dem Weltposttag eine Briefmarke und einen Ersttagsbrief herausgebracht zum Gedenken an 150 Jahre Post in Rodrigues. Am 11. Dezember 1861 wurde das erste Postamt auf Rodrigues eröffnet. 

Leider gibt es dieses Postamt nicht mehr, und es ist mir bislang auch nicht gelungen, herauszufinden, wann genau es schloss, in meiner Erinnerung war es bis 1995 noch operationell, danach folgte dann der Umzug in das Gebäude in der Nähe der Winston Churchill Bridge (siehe Foto weiter unten).

Why today something on philately, stamps, and post offices?

Quite simply, on October 9th of this year, the Mauritian Post Office issued a stamp and a first-day cover to commemorate 150 years of postal service in Rodrigues, coinciding with World Post Day. The first post office in Rodrigues opened on December 11, 1861.

Unfortunately, this post office no longer exists, and I haven't yet been able to find out when it closed exactly. As I recall, it was still operational until 1995, after which it moved to the building near the Winston Churchill Bridge (see photo further below the post).

Das erste Postamt von Rodrigues wurde am 11. Dezember 1861 in Port Mathurin eröffnet. George Messiter, der damalige Magistrat und Administrator von Rodrigues, fungierte als Bezirkspostmeister. Die Post wurde per Schiff befördert. Bei der Ankunft des Schiffes mit Post und Waren im Hafen strömten die Menschen von der ganzen Insel nach Port Mathurin. Dieser Massenansturm ist zu einem legendären Ereignis in Rodrigues geworden.

Die Post wurde dann, wie auf der Briefmarke dargestellt, persönlich vor dem Postamt von Port Mathurin zugestellt, indem ein Beamter den ganzen Tag lang die Namen der Empfänger ausrief.

 

The first post office in Rodrigues was opened on December 11, 1861 in Port Mathurin.  George Messiter, the then-Magistrate and Administrator of Rodrigues, acted as District Postmaster.  The conveyance of mails was effected by ship.  On the arrival of the vessel carrying mails and goods at the harbour, people all around the island converged to Port Mathurin.  This massive movement of people has become a folkloric event in Rodrigues.

The mails were then hand-delivered at "la criée" as depicted on the stamp, whereby an officer simply called the names of the addressees, outside the Port Mathurin Post Office, all day long!

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) was founded in Bern on October 9, 1874. This date forms the basis for World Post Day, which has been celebrated since 1969.

Rodrigues Verbindung zur Philatelie

Rodrigues wurde von dem portugiesischen Seefahrer, Diego Rodrigues in Februar 1528 entdeckt. Bis 1691 blieb die Insel unbewohnt. In diesem Jahr suchte Francois Leguat mit einigen Hugenotten Zuflucht, nachdem er in Frankreich aus religiösen Gründen verfolgt wurde und blieb drei Jahre. Die Siedlung, die auf dem Titelblatt des Leguat Buches im Jahre 1708 "Voyages et Aventures" dargestellt ist, wird auf der 1978 25 c Dauermarke gezeigt.

Im Jahre 1715, als Frankreich Rodrigues annektierte, begann die organisierte Ausbeutung der Riesenschildkröten auf der Insel, Schildkröten-Frischfleisch landete zuhauf auf Schiffen, sei es als Proviant oder für den Bedargf in Mauritius oder der Insel Bourbon, dem heutigen Réunion. Von 1725 bis 1765 ging die Schildkrötenbevölkerung auf weniger als 40 Exemplare zurück.

Im Jahr 1761 diente die Insel als Basis für Astronomen und Mathematiker zur Beobachtung des Transits der Venus.

Im November 1809 wurde Rodrigues durch die Engländer besetzt, die von hier aus ihren Angriff auf das französische Mauritius im Jahr 1810 vorbereitete. Eine Briefmarke zum Gedenken an den zweihundertsten Jahrestag dieses Ereignisses wurde im Jahr 2009 ausgestellt.

In der Government Gazette Nr. 74 von 1861, wird am 19. Dezember durch den Colonial Postmaster GR Saltwell angekündigt, dass "Seine Exzellenz, der Gouverneur, die Einrichtung eines Postamts auf der Insel Rodrigues genehmigt hat, die Öffentlichkeit wird informiert, dass das Büro ordnungsgemäß am 11. Dezember eröffnet wurde. " Der Postmeister war Edward Steven Messiter, Administrator der Insel.

Die erste Rodrigues Entwertung war die Ziffer B65 in einem Oval innerhalb eines Gitters, zusammen mit einem einzigen Kreis-Datumsstempel (cds). Beide wurden aus England im November 1861 verschickt und blieben bis 1896 im Einsatz. Keine vollständige, entwertete B65 ist bekannt. Die früheste erhaltene gesamte von Rodrigues ist 1901 datiert. 

Rodrigues hat immer die Briefmarken von Mauritius verwendet. Zwei Administratoren versuchten erfolglos, markante Themen für die Insel abgetrennt durchzusetzen. ER Mc Millan (1901-1902) schlug einen diagonalen Aufdruck "Rodrigues" vor, der auf die Briefmarken von Mauritius aufgebracht werden sollte. Im Jahr 1929 schlug WJ Hanning ein spezielles Set mit lokalen Motiven vor.

Ab 1965 haben Briefmarken von Mauritius hin und wieder Rodrigues Themen zum Inhalt gehabt, dargestellt weiter unten in dem Beitrag.

 

The Philatelic Connection

Rodrigues was discovered by the Portuguese navigator, Diego Rodrigues in February 1528. It remained uninhabited until 1691. In that year, Francois Leguat with some Hugenots sought refuge there after being prosecuted in France on religious grounds and stayed for three years. The settlement, depicted on the frontispiece of Leguat's book in 1708 " Voyages et aventures " is shown on the 1978 25 c definitive stamp. In 1715 when France annexed Rodrigues, the island became a supplier of tortoises used as fresh meat on ships. From 1725 to 1765 the population was less than 40.

In 1761 the island served as a base for astronomers and mathematicians observing the transit of Venus.

In November 1809, Rodrigues was captured from France by England which used the island to launch its attack on Mauritius in 1810. A stamp commemorating the bicentenary of this event was issued in 2009.

In the Government Gazette No. 74 of 1861, a notice dated 19 December announced through the Colonial Postmaster G R Saltwell that " His Excellency the Governor having been pleased to authorize the establishment of a Post Office in the island of Rodrigues, the Public is informed that the office was duly opened on the 11th instant." The Postmaster was Edward Steven Messiter, Administrator of the island.

The first Rodrigues cancellation was the numeral B65 in an oval of bars, together with the single circle circular datestamp (cds). Both were dispatched from England in November 1861 and remained in use until 1896. No entire cancelled with B65 is known. The earliest surviving entire from Rodrigues is dated 1901.

Rodrigues has always used the stamps of Mauritius. Two Administrators unsuccessfully sought separate distinctive issues for the island. E R Mc Millan (1901-02) proposed that a diagonal overprint 'Rodrigues' be applied to the stamps of Mauritius. In 1929 W J Hanning suggested a special set with local motifs.

As from 1965, stamps of Mauritius have every now and then featured Rodriguan topics.

In 1994, the set ' Children's Games and Pastimes' featured one stamp with a painting by a Rodriguan child, Stephen Martin from Port Sud Est Government School.

 

It is also believed that the Rs 5 Beach scene
from the 1950 King George VI issue and 1953 Queen Elizabeth issue is from Rodrigues.

 

 

 

Doch nun zu den Postämtern auf Rodrigues

 

Port Mathurin beherbergte zwischen 1861 und 1986 das einzige Postamt auf der Insel, danach wurden zwei weitere Postämter in La Ferme und Mont Lubin eröffnet. Das Postamt in Riviere Coco wurde am 22. Juli 1998 eröffnet, das Postamt in Grande Montagne Post am 22. Februar 1999. Es ist interessant festzustellen, dass das Postamt in Mont Lubin in den 1990er Jahren etwa 400 Meter weiter an den Ort Malabar verlegt wurde. Obwohl am Schild der Tür "Malabar Post Office" steht, ist das Postamt offiziell als Mont Lubin Post Office bekannt.

 

Heute gibt es auf Rodrigues fünf vollwertige Postämter: in Port Mathurin, La Ferme, Rivière Cocos, Mont Lubin und Grande Montagne. Alle fünf Postämter sind mit automatisierten Schaltern ausgestattet.
Im Jahr 2010 zog das Postamt Port Mathurin aus dem alten Polizeigebäude in ein modernes und geräumiges Gebäude um. Die Renovierung und das Branding der anderen Postämter sind im Gange.

 

Port Mathurin housed the only post office on the island until 1986 when two other post offices were opened in La Ferme and Mont Lubin. Riviere Coco Post Office opened on 22 July 1998. Grande Montagne Post Office was inaugurated on 22 February 1999. It is interesting to note that the Mont Lubin post office was relocated in the 1990's some 400 metres away to the locality of Malabar. Although the sign on the door reads Malabar Post Office, the post office is officially known as Mont Lubin Post Office. 

 

Today there are 5 full fledge  post offices in Rodrigues, namely at Port Mathurin, La Ferme, Rivière Cocos, Mont Lubin and Grande Montagne.  All five post offices are counter automated.
In 2010, the Port Mathurin Post Office was transferred from the old Police Quarters to a modern and spacious building.  Renovation of other post offices and branding are under way.

Ich hätte gern etwas Ähnliches auch für Rodrigues gefunden, leider nicht. Ich habe es in Patricks Flickr-Album über Postämter in Mauritius entdeckt. Hinweis: Mobile Postämter gibt es in Mauritius noch immer. 

 

I would have loved to find something like that for Rodrigues too but unfortunately not, found it in Patrick's flickr album on Post Offices in Mauritius. Note: The mobile Post Office still exists in Mauritius.
