Segler in Rodrigues....Meet S/Y Lupina and the Brigantine Neptun

 S/Y Lupina

A sailing yacht built in 2006, sailing under Swiss flag with Pia Koch and  Köbi Brem. They started their voyage 8 years ago. I f you are interested to lear more about their boat and their circumnavigation, you can find lots of stories with great photos on their blog.

S/Y Neptun is sailing under Danish flag and is a registered non-profit organization with the purpose of providing training opportunities for anyone interested in learning traditional sailing skills and seamanship while cruising the world oceans and exploring remote places.

While I was at the jetty to take photos of the yacht, it had already diappeared, and was on its way to Mauritius, obviously with a new charter group on board. By coincidence I met Pia and  Köbi from S'Y Lupina while at Kafe Rose, they had taken a photo of Neptun which they sent me.

Cocos Keeling

This beautiful red-footed booby was S/Y Lupina's companion for one day while in Cocos Keeling.I love boobies, even if their feet aren't blue.

Hier Pia mit der Flagge von Cocos Keeling.

Müll gibt es in jedem Paradies.

There is trash in every paradise.

Hier S/Y Lupina nicht im Gegenlicht. Nicht in Rodrigues.

Here S/Y Lupina not backlit. A photo I borrowed from their blog.

And because it is so interesting, here is a little more on the brigantine Neptun...

S/Y Neptun hier mit vollen Segeln... - S/Y Neptun here under full sail...

The 2026 season is the opening chapter of a 482-day world voyage. Brigantine NEPTUN leaves Bali on 1 May 2026 and arrives in Cape Town by Christmas, two long ocean legs, 6,428 nautical miles of trade-wind sailing, island landfalls, and the great rounding of the Cape of Good Hope.

Leg 1 crosses the Indian Ocean from Bali to Mauritius via Komodo, Cocos (Keeling) and Rodrigues, three months of trade-wind ocean sailing. Leg 4 is the culmination, a long offshore passage from Mauritius to the tip of Africa and the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope, one of the most storied pieces of sailing on earth. (Source)

The full history of the Neptun is not precisely known; it was reportedly built in 1947 by the D. W. Kremer Sohn shipyard in Elmshorn, Germany, commissioned by F. Laeisz (Hamburg) as a fishing vessel. At the time, Kremer was a leader in the construction of fishing cutters—such as the famous Kremer 21-meter model—because these small vessels were permitted to be built legally under the Allied restrictions aimed at combating post-war hunger. Later, the ship was acquired by Poland and used as a border patrol boat. In 1959, it received new registration papers and was converted back into a fishing vessel. In 1990, a man named Henny discovered the ship in IJmuiden (Netherlands), where he refitted it, installed masts, and maintained it. In December 2022, he sold the ship to the non-profit organization Neptun with the aim of creating a community vessel featuring a sail training program for voyages around the world.

A German sailing magazine, "Sailing Journal",  has featured in their first edition of 2012 a great article about Rodrigues, unfortunately only in German and not available on the net.The article of journalist Matthias Müncheberg is not only about a traditional regatta in the lagoon and the way these boats are built (which was the main purpose of his visit), it portrays a couple of different people, not all of them sailing themselves but with a closeness to the sea or marine visitors...
As a lot of people here, especially James Waterstone, would like to know what Matthias Müncheberg has written about them and their island, I will from time to time present some extracts of the article, translated into English.A bit of patience is needed, as other projects come first.

Hello everyone!
I’m HIROSHI MAEDA, the Captain of the Japanese Yacht Yaima. I started sailing when I was a student in the university. Sailing around the world was my dream and always on my mind. I started my sailing trip around the world on 24th March with my youngest son this year. We have sailed to a lot of countries in Asia.It is good to experience different cultures, meet different people and try the local dishes. We arrived in Rodrigues Island last Saturday and we did enjoy the time and warm friendship on this beautiful island.
My son,Yuki, met Birgit in the library while he was searching the informmation there. She is a very friendly and interesting lady. They had a great time chatting.
I have two crews right now, my son YUKI and my Taiwanese friend Huiling.
She will sail with us to Madagascar and then fly back to Taiwan for her work. Most of the time, only my son and I sail the boat along the 2 years sailing trip .

Erst verschlungen, dann 'on the rocks' - eine Wikingerin namens Freydis

East coast of Japan - Freydis, red and named after the daughter of Erich the Viking-
She made more than 248 000 sea miles, built in 1978/79

On Monday I got an e-mail from our friends Heide and Erich Wilts, that their sailing boat Freydis was swallowed by the tsunami in Japan. We met the German couple about 10 years ago here in Rodrigues, as they prepared for a cruise to South Africa with a stopover at St.Brandon and Reunion. Ever since we have followed their routes which led them to the most remote areas between the poles. The Freydis is a boat with history, a history quite out of the ordinary too. She had been several times in dramatic situations, and several times she was believed to be dead, but every time she got up.

Iwaki Bay after the Tsunami- only few boats didn't sink or were swept away/Source Freydis Blog

But now to the story, which took an unexpected turn yesterday .... Here is an article that was published today in a German newspaper, some additional information and photos are from Erich and Heide's Blog.

Erst vernichtet, dann wieder aufgetaucht -
First destroyed, then resurfaced...

Von EZ-Redakteur AXEL MILKERTS

Iwaki/Heidelberg.

Within an unimaginable tragedy like that in Japan there are also personal disasters, small in comparison but with a lot of impact for the ones affected. Such as the one which happened to Erich Wilts, native to Leer, and his wife Heide (both 69) . Their boat, the "Freydis II ", has apparently become a victim of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation.

Yesterday and on Monday the couple went here through an emotional roller coaster ride. Last year they had "parked" their yacht of about 14 meter length in the Iwaki-Sun Marina in Iwaki. From there they had intended to leave for the next project, leading them to Kamchatka - as the first boat of this kind at all. It was prepared for everything. Then the earthquake happened.

Iwaki Sun Marina- Freydis' mooring & overwintering place before she was supposed to sail again via Kamtchatka to Alaska in June after some overhauling

Sunday they received an e-mail from Iwaki. They learned that the marina was completely destroyed and that the "Freydis II" had been washed away. Yesterday then another e-mail: the chief editor of a Japanese sailor magazine that once had reported on the German boat wrote that a reader had discovered the boat. And he sent even a photo. The "Freydis II is situated at a cliff near Iwaki, obviously still in better shape than one could expect.

A miracle: found 4 days after the tsunami with the mast still up

"We cried when we saw that, " said Erich Wilts in conversation with the Emden newspaper. The boat is a "substantial part" in the lives of the two sailing enthusiasts, who had fascinated in the past also the local people from Emden with the accounts of their circumnavigations.

Over 248 000 nautical miles they have completed with their boat since 1979. This makes eleven and a half times around the world. The trips led them - beside others- to Antarctica, South America and the North Pacific. All voyages, also the ones on "Freydis I, " began in Leer.

Erich and Heide Wilts - she is a native of Stuttgart and a former senior doctor of Ammerland clinic in Westerstede - will continue, even though both realize that their literally again surfaced boat probably can't be saved. Iwaki is located two hours southeast of the damaged nuclear power plants from Fukushima.

Freydis Position is now Misaki, Onahama, Iwaki city - so she flow about 4 km north east.

Another boat has to be built. A costly endeavor. Reconstructing a boat like "Freydis II", will certainly not be possible any more with 500 000 , Erich Wilts said. They will work to continue to live their sailing dreams, he announced. As up to 75, he would like to go on. Work, that is, above all, giving lectures. The couple, who now lives in Heidelberg, can probably soon be seen and heard again in Emden.

Beside all the pain over the loss of "Freydis II", their thoughts are with the people of Japan. "Even friends of ours have already been evacuated, "says Erich Wilts. Ken Ando, the editor of the sailing magazine, calls it "a miracle" that the German sailing boat hasn't been damaged more. His e-mail ends with the words: "People in Japan do not lose hope."

Today will be about a boat, it came as complete surprise around Christmas the year before in 2010, usually not the season for circumnavigators to arrive in Rodrigues, it was a first for Christmas since we have been here ...

Hmm, and how does one celebrate Christmas as sailing people in the middle of the Indian Ocean?

So here you get a glimpse of how a real classical Christmas tree looks on a sailing boat...

And these are Lara and Nicola from the Australian sailing yacht "Flinders Chase" together with their many companions on board...

Petra's Motto ist übrigens : "Just go ahead and do it!"

Their mother Petra, a German woman married to a Frenchman, Gilles, is the skipper of Flinders Chase. Before leaving they called Australia their home country. The last few months before Rodrigues they spent in Oman and Dubai in scorching heat, rather unusual for sailors. They spent about 2 weeks in Rodrigues, so New Year included, and after the first week in 2011, they continued their voyage to Mauritius. And that's Petra 's motto: "Just go ahead and do it!" I have no clue where there are at the moment, we hope they are all fine and want to wish them, and all circumnavigators who have passed Rodrigues, on this occasion a very happy 2012 from our side!

Fair winds and good luck to all of you for 2012!

- Petra, thanks for the pics! -

S/Y AVOCET

Who expected to find now an article explaining more about the Avocet, maybe to get to know an interesting story about an unbelievable odyssey bringing that beautiful bird to remote Rodrigues,...no way, as it's not about the bird but about another "bird of passage", operating under the very same name...Hier die S/Y AVOCET aus Irland am Tag ihrer Ankunft..-
So, meet the S/Y AVOCET from Ireland on the day of her arrival...

The day Laurent on TAO left, S/Y AVOCET came. That was on April 27, the same day a fishing vessel collected some fisher men from Rodrigues to work on the banks far out, they will come back in a couple of weeks. Unfortuantely the S/Y AVOCET does not come out as elegant as the bird, for which I blame the light, not allowing me a better angle.

No, neither Rodrigues, nor Hamilton Island. That's Cork, the island where sailing yacht Avocet started her voyage...Kerry on Cork Island is the home of Derry and Quentin Ryder, as captain and skipper, as father and son too...And Cork is one of the coastal habitats of the Avocet which is in some areas still considered as endangered. In England it was nearly extinct by the end of WW II. So Avocet was thought to be the convenient name for a boat supposed to carry a crew of max.

...even the other way round..., as S/Y AVOCET came this way as shown on their
position map on the net. This is very rare, normally the circumnavigators prefer to come with the winds from the east in the back.

Here a first encounter on the jetty with James Waterstone who tries to welcome each incoming boat personally, asking for an entry in his Golden Book of Visitors in order to document as many arrivals as possible. Without James no records would exist about Rodrigues as a stopover for navigators, often entries are done with photos and personal accounts of the itinery, making it a fascinating read. From l.t.r. Jacqueline Ouchard of big game fishing boat Why not?,James Waterstone, Quentin, the skipper of Avocet, and Sim and Alex, members of the crew since Mauritius.

But there is also Rudy, member of the crew since South-Africa whose T-shirt appeal turned out to be successful, as he has left Rodrigues already for new waters...-

Here so far the latest entry of their logbook...
"we have finally moved from mauritius to rodrigues this long stay in mauritius was because they are so nice and friendly and did not want us to go away we met lots of lovely people who wanted to feed us show us the island bring us to nearby islands etc it is very difficult to leave such nice people.we had a fast trip here but a bit rough winds from 4 to 8 lots of torrential rain.we are again looking for crew as rudy our south african has been tempted away to take a paid crew position on a charter yacht from rsa based in mauritius so if there is anyone out there interested please call me..."

As far as we know the position is still on! Instead of looking for paying charter clients as some yachts do to have a little income, the Avocet takes unpaid crew whenever they need hands on board, in exchange, the crew members get an interesting experience but pay for their food.

And here, last but not least the captain D
erry Ryder, showing me his navigational equipment. It's his first trip around the world although his passion for sailing dates back a long time. He and his son Quentin have left home last year in August. With Quentin as skipper the boat is in safe hands as he brings in some good experience acquired as marine officer already in charge of bigger vessels.

And to end with for today: That's how a quick shave looks like on a sailing boat...(Sim was unaware of me and my camera...)
