Fruit Bat Festival....alles über Flughunde in Rodrigues

The Rodrigues branch of World Wildlife Mauritius has organized a Bat Festival, during this week the interested public can get a lot of information about bats in general and the island's only endemic mammal, the Rodriguan Fruit Bat in particular. An exhibition is still open until Saturday....In this context, and as we love these wonderful creatures here so much, we have decided to extend the festival, during the whole month we will come back to the topic, giving you information about bats and the work carried out by Wildlife Mauritius. We will show photos and we will refer as well to the latest discussions and research... So don't be surprised to find bats instead of Easter bunnies here ...

Brian, der blinde Passagier....Brian , the Space Bat.......Chauve-souris Brian, le passenger clandestin...

Beim Start der Discovery am vergangenen Sonntag war ein "blinder Passagier" mit an Bord. Eine Fledermaus, die sich vermutlich den Flügel gebrochen hatte, hatte sich kurz vor dem Start an die Außenseite der Raumfähre geheftet. Die von der NASA veröffentlichte Mitteilung machte schnell die Runde und prompt hatte das Tier einen Namen erhalten: Brian. Mittlerweile ist es amtlich, leider hat Brian den Trip ins All nicht überlebt. Zu Beginn glaubte man, es handele sich um einen Fruit Bat, d.h. eine Spezies, wie sie auch hier vorkommt. Doch auch das hat sich geklärt, der blinde Passagier gehörte einer anderen Familie an und kann somit auf keinen Fall aus Rodrigues gekommen oder ein Verwandter gewesen sein...

Brian, the Space Bat, is dead. It did not survive his trip, probably because of a broken wing which did not allow him to take off just before the launching of the shuttle. We know now for sure that Brian had not been a fruit bat, so it could not have been a Rodriguan clandestine passenger, not even family as Brian was a free-tailed bat. ...All about Brian and more photos here.

Une chauve-souris s'envole dans l'espace, accrochée à une navette spatiale...ce passenger clandestin, déjà célèbre et nommé Brian, n'a pas survecu son voyage. On sait maintenant aussi ce qu'il ne venait ni de Rodrigues, ni c'était une relation familiale...

Meet Tanner...Auch Flughunde aus Rodrigues feiern Geburtstag! - Oldest Fruit Bat in Captivity turned 23...

In diesem Artikel geht es um Tanner, einen Rodriguischen Flughund, der als ältestem seiner in Gefangenschaft lebenden Art, im Dezember seinen 23. Geburtstag mit Papaya, Mango und Melone beging, bei voller Gesundheit und im Ruhestand lebend, wie die Organisation für die Erhaltung von Fledermäusen (OBC) in Bloomfield,Michigan, Tanners Zuhause, bekanntgegeben hat.

Nur etwa 4.000 dieser großen, Früchte verzehrenden Flughundart lebt noch auf der winzigen Insel Rodrigues im Indischen Ozean. In der Wildnis werden sie ungefähr 20 Jahre alt.

Tanner war bis vor wenigen Monaten der zweitälteste der rund 1.000 in Gefangenschaft lebenden "Goldenen Flughunde", bis ein 23-jähriges Weibchen im Brookfield Zoo in Chicago starb, die bis dahin den Altersrekord anführte. Mit seinen 23 Jahren ist Tanner drei Jahre älter als die anderen in Gefangenschaft lebenden Artgenossen. Da weltweit jeder in Gefangenschaft lebende Flughund registriert ist, gibt es keinen Zweifel am Alter von Tanner.

Wegen ihres rotblonden, goldenenen Fells, sind Tanner und seinesgleichen auch als Goldene Flughunde bekannt und gehören zu den größten Fledermäusen in der Welt.

Tanner hat eine Flügelspannweite von 1,22 Meter und wiegt etwa ein Pfund, aufgrund einer Flügelverletzung kann er nicht mehr fliegen.

OBC ist eine Non-Profit-Organisation mit dem Ziel des Fledermausschutzes und der Aufklärung der Öffentlichkeit über Fledermäuse. Sie sind Heimat für mehr als 100 Fledermäuse aus der ganzen Welt.

Oldest bat has swingin’ birthday soiree Tanner, a senior citizen among his kind, celebrates the big 2-3

Tanner the golden bat, the oldest of his kind in captivity, will celebrate his 23rd birthday by hanging around and chomping on a few pieces of papaya, mango and melon.

Officials marked the occasion Friday at the Cranbrook Institute, Bloomfield , Michigan.

"He's in good health. He's retired," Organization for Bat Conservation director Rob Mies said.

By his species' standards Tanner is a senior citizen.

Only about 4,000 of the large, fruit-eating bats still live on tiny Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean. They live about 20 years in the wild, Mies said.

Tanner had been the second oldest of the 1,000 or so golden bats in captivity until a few months ago when a 23-year-old female died at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo. He's also three years older than others in captivity.

Their ages are confirmed because each of the captive bats are registered worldwide, Mies said.

Called golden because of their reddish-blond fur, Tanner and his ilk also are known as golden flying foxes and are among the largest bats in the world.

Tanner has a 4-foot (1.22-meter) wingspan and weighs about a pound, but no longer flies due to a wing injury.

The nonprofit Organization for Bat Conservation researches and educates the public about bats. Its Bat Zone at Cranbrook is home to more than 100 bats from around the world.

Unsere Nachbarn hat der ganze Rummel um Olympia ziemlich unbeeindruckt gelassen, auf die Frage gestern, wie sie das Ereignis erlebt haben, ernteten wir nur einen etwas mitleidigen Blick - und schwupps ging's ab in die Guaven , wo dann weiteres Abhängen angesagt war...Our neighbours stayed mostly unimpressed by the Olympic Games as we could find out yesterday ourselves when asking them how they have experienced the event...A rather pityful look was the reaction before they continued diving into the next guyaves, hanging around looking for some more dinner...
