"Neuigkeiten frisch von unserem Vulkan, von dem ich gerade zurückkomme. Das Feuer, verursacht durch die Lava am Fuße des Walls auf der Ebene des Piton de Bert, ist noch nicht beendet, trotz des Einsatzes  des Löschflugzeugs (Dash) und zweier Hubschrauber den ganzen Nachmittag über. Der Wanderpfad zum Piton de Bert ist geschlossen. Weitere besorgniserregende Neuigkeit: die Ordnungskräfte evakuieren alle anwesenden Personen im Bereich des Vulkans.Ab Bourg Murat gibt es keinen Zugriff mehr auf die Straße zum Vulkan.Es scheint, dass ein sehr ernstes Ereignis auftreten könnte, auch außerhalb des Bereichs... Sieht man sich die seismische Aktivität des Kraters Rival seit 24.00Uhr an, kann man sich tatsächlich ein paar Fragen stellen...-

Fresh news from our volcano of which I have just returned. The fire caused by the lava flows reached the foot of the ramparts on the level of the Piton Bert is still not finished despite the intervention of the Dash (firefighting plane) and two helicopters throughout the afternoon. Yhe hiking trail leading to the Piton Bert is closed. Other disturbing news: the police are evacuating all persons present in the volcano area. No more access to the road to the volcano is possible from Bourg Murat. It seems that a serious event could occur, even outside of the enclosure ... View the recorded seismic activity of the crater Rival since midnight, we can actually ask some questions ..

Des nouvelles toutes fraîches de notre volcan. J'en reviens à l'instant. L'incendie provoqué par les coulées de lave arrivant au pied du rempart au niveau du Piton de Bert n'est toujours pas terminé malgré l'intervention du Dash et deux hélicoptères toute l'après-midi. Du coup le sentier de randonné menant au Piton de Bert est fermé. Autre nouvelle inquiétante : les forces de l'ordre font évacuer en douceur toutes les personnes présentes dans le secteur du volcan. Plus aucun accès à la route du volcan n'est possible depuis Bourg Murat. Il semblerait qu'un événement très sérieux puisse se produire, même en dehors de l'enclos... Vue l'activité sismique enregistrée au niveau du cratère Rivals depuis 24h, on peut effectivement se poser quelques questions...."

Gestern Abend gab es einen seltsamen Rauch vom Eruptionskegel. Laut einiger Experten vor Ort, könnte dies das Zeichen einer bevorstehenden Explosion des Kraters sein, gefolgt von seinem Zusammenbruch. Übrigens, kurz nach der Aufnahme dieses Fotos, begannen zwei Polizisten im Hubschrauber, den Platz zu evakuieren...-

 Last night a strange smoke emanated from the eruptive cone. Due to some specialists present on site, this could be a sign of an imminent explosion crater followed by its collapse. In fact, shortly after taking this photo, two gendarmes in a helicopter, started to evacuate the site ...

 Hier soir une étrange fumée se dégageait du cône éruptif. Selon certains spécialistes présents sur place, cela pourrait être le signe d'une explosion imminente du cratère suivi de son effondrement. D'ailleurs, peu de temps après la prise de cette photo, deux gendarmes déposés sur zone en hélico, feront évacuer le site...

"Gestern Abend beschloss ich mal ein wenig Abstand vom Vulkan zu nehmen.Nichtsdestotrotz, die Eruption ist immer noch gut sichtbar von der Umgebung des Maïdo.-

Last night I decided to take some distance from the volcano. However, the eruption is still clearly visible from the Maido.

 Hier soir j'ai décidé de prendre un peu mes distances avec le volcan. Néanmoins, l'éruption reste bien visible depuis les environs du Maïdo."

"Eine neue Nacht am Fuße des Ausbruchs. Der Kegel hat mittlerweile ein respektablives Ausmaß und die Aktivität schwächt nicht ab. Dieses Mal war der Mond zur Show im Hintergrund eingeladen. Auch der Pleiaden-Sternhaufen ist sichtbar.

New night at the volcano. The cone is now of a very respectable size and activity remains strong. This time the Moon was invited to the show in the background. The Pleiades open cluster is also visible.-

 Nouvelle nuit au pied de l'éruption. Le cône est maintenant d'une taille très respectable et l'activité ne faiblit pas. Cette fois-ci la Lune s'est invitée au spectacle en arrière plan. L'amas ouvert des Pléiades est également visible."

Während der Vulkan weitermacht mit seiner Show, wird das kleine Dorf Marla langsam von einem Wolkenmeer heimgesucht. Dazwischen sehen wir all die Licht vom Cilaos.-

While the volcano continues his show, the small village of Marla, at the foot of Taïbit, lets itself slowly invaded by a sea of cloud. In between, we see all the luminosity from Cilaos.-

Pendant que le volcan poursuit son show tout au loin, le petit village de Marla, au pied du col du Taïbit, se laisse tout doucement envahir par une mer du nuage. Entre les deux, on aperçoit toute la luminosité provenant du Cirque de Cilaos.

The mourning volcano Popocatepetl....Ein Vulkan in Dauertrauer...

Wie viele vielleicht mitbekommen haben, hat der Popocatepetl, - Höhe 5.452 m -, seine Tätigkeit mit mehreren Eruptionen seit Mai intensiviert, was zu Flugausfällen am 4., 5. und 13. Juli führte sowie einer Warnstufe, die derzeit bei einer Stufe unter Evakuierung liegt. Menschen, die in Vulkannähe leben, sind angehalten, Vorsichtsmaßnahmen wie die Verwendung von Masken, für Wasserversorgung und Aufenthalt im Haus zu treffen. 

 Die bislang erforschte Geschichte dieses Vulkans beginnt vor 430 000 Jahren. Ab 1509 gab es bis zum 20. Jahrhundert keine nennenswerten Ausbrüche. 1919 setzte erneut Aktivität ein, die bis 1927 andauerte.Ein Ausbruch am 21. Dezember 1994 beendete eine ca. 50 Jahre lange Ruhephase.
Bis zu der gegenwärtigen Aktivität kam es in den Jahren 2000, 2007, 2011 und im April 2012 zu Eruptionen mit teilweise kilometerhoch steigenden Aschewolken.-.

As many might have noticed, the Popocatepetl - altitude 5,452 m -, has intensified its activities with several eruptions since May, leading to flight cancellations on 4, 5 and 13 July and to a warning level, which is currently one notch below evacuation level. People who live around the volcano are advised to take precautions such as using of masks, covering of water supplies and staying indoors. 

As far as known until now, the history of this volcano began 430 000 years ago. As of 1509, there were no significant outbreaks up to the 20 century. Activity began again in 1919 lasting until 1927. An outbreak on 21 December 1994 ended a 50 year-long dormancy.
Up to the present activity erruptions occurred in 2000, 2007, 2011, and in April 2012 with several kilometers high rising ash clouds. -

Wann immer ich vom Popocatepetl höre, muss ich an lang vergangene Schulstunden denken, als uns die Legende dieses Vulkans vermittelt wurde, wahrscheinlich der Grund überhaupt, dass Leute wie ich noch heute den Namen erinnern und ihn halbwegs richtig aussprechen können. Die Legende selbst war nicht so gut haften geblieben, die musste ich nochmal nachlesen...-

Whenever I hear something about Popocatepetl, I recall some long gone days at school, hearing about the legend of this volcano, and certainly one of the reasons why people like me are still able to recall the difficult name at all, coming even close to pronounce it halfway correctly...)) This did not go for the legend, I had to reread everything about it...

 

Iztaccíhuatl

In der Mythologie der Azteken war Iztaccíhuatl eine Prinzessin, die sich in einen der Krieger ihres Vaters verliebte, Popocatepetl. Ihr Vater sandte den Krieger in einen Kriegszug in Oaxaca. Der Vater versprach dem Krieger seine Tochter, wenn er zurückkehren würde (was der Vater aber nicht glaubte). Der Tochter wurde erzählt, ihr Geliebter sei tot, woraufhin sie vor Kummer starb. Als der Krieger aber zurückkehrte, starb er wiederum, aus Kummer darüber, sie verloren zu haben. Die Götter bedeckten die beiden mit Schnee und verwandelten sie in Berge. Der schneebedeckte Berg Iztaccíhuatl wird deshalb auch „weiße Frau“ genannt, da er einer auf dem Rücken liegenden Frau ähnelt. Der Krieger wurde zum Vulkan Popocatépetl, der aus Zorn über den Verlust der Geliebten Feuer speit.(source) -

In the mythology of the Aztecs Iztaccihuatl was a princess who fell in love with one of her father's warriors, Popocatepetl. Her father sent the warriors into a military campaign in Oaxaca. The father promised his daughter to the warrior when he would return (which the father doubted). The daughter was told that her lover was dead, whereupon she died of grief. But when the warriors returned, he in turn died, of grief to have lost her. The gods covered their bodies with snow and turned them into mountains. The snow-capped mountain Iztaccihuatl is therefore also called "white woman" because it resembles a woman lying on her back. The Warrior became the volcano Popocatépetl, which spits fire out of anger over the loss of his beloved. (source)

Vorhin habe ich gelesen, dass die Gefahrenstufe um den Vulkan herum eine Stufe heruntergestzt wurde, offenbar ist jetzt erstmal ein wenig Ausruhen angesagt, bis zur nächsten Phase des Trauerns halt ...-

Just a couple of hours ago I have read that "recently, Mexican officials downgraded the alert status at Popocatépetl to Yellow-Phase II (from Phase III) after the explosions at the restless volcano waned. This doesn’t mean that larger explosions like we saw earlier this month might not happen again, but the risk is lower now." Knowing the legend of Popocatepetl we are all aware that the next phase of mourning will come, sooner or later...
