23.10.2015
Fünfte Eruption in diesem Jahr -
Fifth eruption this year -
5ième éruption en cette année
© Luc PERROT

Fresh news from our volcano of which I have just returned. The fire caused by the lava flows reached the foot of the ramparts on the level of the Piton Bert is still not finished despite the intervention of the Dash (firefighting plane) and two helicopters throughout the afternoon. Yhe hiking trail leading to the Piton Bert is closed. Other disturbing news: the police are evacuating all persons present in the volcano area. No more access to the road to the volcano is possible from Bourg Murat. It seems that a serious event could occur, even outside of the enclosure ... View the recorded seismic activity of the crater Rival since midnight, we can actually ask some questions ..

After more than one month of activity, the eruption is still ongoing.-

Last night a strange smoke emanated from the eruptive cone. Due to some specialists present on site, this could be a sign of an imminent explosion crater followed by its collapse. In fact, shortly after taking this photo, two gendarmes in a helicopter, started to evacuate the site ...

Last night I decided to take some distance from the volcano. However, the eruption is still clearly visible from the Maido.

New night at the volcano. The cone is now of a very respectable size and activity remains strong. This time the Moon was invited to the show in the background. The Pleiades open cluster is also visible.-

While the volcano continues his show, the small village of Marla, at the foot of Taïbit, lets itself slowly invaded by a sea of cloud. In between, we see all the luminosity from Cilaos.-

From Reunion to Mauritius - Blick auf Mauritius...L'ile Maurice vue de la Réunion

Mauritius viewed from the island of Reunion
10.07.2015/Luc Perrot

Once you are landed at Luc Perrot no way to get away from his pics at once. While I was looking for his Venus-Jupiter images, I found others which so far I had never seen. Obviously one can see in clear winter weather conditions, (yes, it is winter in our region!), from Reunion Island to Mauritius, even with the naked eye ... Just awesome! -

"Mauritius view from Reunion Island with a panoramic version.
Later in the night, the Milky Way has shifted slightly to the north of Mauritius.
In this photo, the Enclos Fouqué and the top of the Piton de la Fournaise are clearly visible. Magellanic clouds are on the right. Further down, the lights of Bois Blanc."-

Anyone who has doubts as to whether it is really possible to see as far as Mauritius, can take in this photo from Burty Makoona, the reverse view perspective, the view from Mauritius to Reunion. Luc Perrot has allowed himself, authorized by the photographer, to include smaller geographical notes. -

Summary Authors: Luc Perrot; Jim Foster
"Shown above is Piton de la Fournaise, on Reunion Island (France) in the Indian Ocean, as observed during its recent eruption sequence of February 4-15,2015. It's photographed here beneath a full moon on February 4, 2015. Piton de la Fournaise (peak of the furnace) standing 8,635 ft (2,632 m) above sea level is one of the most active shield volcanoes in the world. With the majority of its eruptions, a fluid, basaltic lava flows from fountaining vents - so-called Hawaiian style eruptions."

Nachtrag....Milchstraße, Venus & Jupiter in Réunion

It has been quite a while that I published photos of Luc Perrot here. During the Venus-Jupiter conjunction I was taken so much looking up to our sky in Rodrigues, that I did not even get the idea to check his Internet sites for his view of the phenomenon in Reunion. As you can see, I am about to catch up.As starters above a breath taking image of the Milky Way...-

And here surprise, surprise an extraordinary view of Reunion and Mauritius during full moon taken again by Karen Nyberg at 400 km altitude from the International Space Shuttle in the night from 25 to 26 August, shortly before midnight local time.
What looks like a circle of fire is the illuminated island of Reunion, a bit further up in the north-east you can see Mauritius. Unfortunately Rodrigues is not visible here.-

In der Nacht von Donnerstag auf Freitag....A la Réunion

  Photo: Luc Perrot

When we arrived at Maïdo in the night from Thursday to Friday for the Geminid shower, it was never won yet. We were immersed in a thick fog. And then gradually panorama has been revealed to our eyes, magically. In this photo of Mafate, yet we perceive all cloudy residue of a particularly rainy day ... but the stars were there!

Earth Pic 2011....A fogbow...Ein Nebelbogen in Réunion

"The image above featuring a fine example of a fogbow was taken on Reunion Island using time-lapse photography. The Brocken spectre and glory result primarily from diffraction- deflection of sunlight about minute cloud droplets. They only form at the antisolar point.

Fogbows form in a way similar to rainbows - sunlight is refracted and redirected inside of water droplets. However, because the cloud droplets are much smaller than raindrops, the geometric optics are much different. Diffraction of sunlight, not refraction, is much more important. Fogbows are largely pale in color because the very small droplets ensure that colors overlap. You can also view this phenomenon on a time-lapse video. The photo was taken on June 10, 2011." Congrats to Luc Perrot who won the Earth Science Picture photo contest with his beautiful fog bow!

Ein ganz besonderer Regenbogen... a very special rainbow - and a photo contest!

Due to the very dry and sunny weather, I haven't seen a rainbow recently, but have found an extraordinarily beautiful and special one here taken in Australia. It is a reflection rainbow which reminded on one I had seen two years ago in Rodrigues.

"How many of you have ever seen a rainbow like the one above? The presence of water nearby is the key to having a chance to observe such a bow. This picture was snapped in Swan Bay, just off theBellarine Peninsula of Victoria, Australia. It's not a double rainbow, which consists of primary and secondary rainbows, but rather a reflection rainbow that magically appeared preceding a rain shower (...) Reflection bows occur when sunlight reflects off a smooth body of water, into the sky, at a higher angle than the light responsible for causing the primary bow (approximately 42 degrees). In essence, the reflection of sunlight from the bay waters interacted with the raindrops to form another rainbow -- the one to the left.

It's usually possible to tell if a bow is reflected or not since the color sequence is the same as that of the primary bow. The sequence is reversed with a secondary bow (upper left). Because the Sun was so low when this photo was captured, the red colours dominate ; nonetheless, a lighter blue band can be seen on the inside of both the primary and reflection rainbows. A low Sun is almost essential for viewing a reflection bow since high-in-the-sky Suns don't reflect sunlight as strongly. Photo taken on June 13, 2011.

By the way, you can still vote for this or many other impressive photos here until January 11, a competition run by Earth Science Picture. You will also find a beautiful fog bow taken by Luc Perrot from Reunion who we know already from his shots of Lovejoy....

Und zum Jahresende noch einen Komet..."Lovejoy"

Seen in Australia
Photo: Alex Cherney/TWAN

Christmas Comet Lovejoy
Seen in Reunion Island
Photo: Luc Perrot

Chris asked me if we could also see Lovejoy in Rodrigues. In recent days I have been following the news less than usuallly, and therefore, first, I had no idea of what Chris was talking in the first place. "Lovejoy" the Australian TV series? Chris sent me then a photo which brought me onto the right path, for which I am very grateful.

Above photo by Luc Perrot proves that it was apparently possible for us to see the comet, Reunion is not so far away from Rodrigues and as we too do not suffer from light pollution I'm almost certain if I hadn't been on Santa Claus tracks, but instead had watched the sky, I could have seen it ....

Enjoy here Luc's Perrot's slideshow of 35 pictures - a result of 18 months of night shooting realized on Réunion Island. These images show the diversity of landscapes of Réunion under the starry sky. Most of these pictures were done in the area of the Piton de la Fournaise, volcano area free from light pollution.
