Stunning Etna.... Ätna-Impressionen

Seit Wochen spuckt der Ätna Lava und Asche, ihren vorläufigen Höhepunkt erlebten die Eruptionen in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. Dezember: Einer der heftigsten Ausbrüche der letzten 20 Jahre jagte eine kilometerhohe Fontäne aus geschmolzenem Gestein in den Himmel; manche Gesteinsbrocken sollen sogar drei Kilometer hoch geschossen worden sein. Dazu ging heftiger Ascheregen über dem Nordosten Siziliens nieder, und der Flugverkehr wurde kurzzeitig eingeschränkt. Menschen oder Gebäude kamen nicht zu Schaden. -
 

For weeks the Etna spews lava and ash, its climax experienced the eruptions in the night of 2 to 3 December: One of the most violent eruptions of the past 20 years chasing a kilometer high fountain of molten rock into the sky; some rocks to have been even scored three kilometers high. Heavy ash fall  went down on the northeast of Sicily, and air traffic has been temporarily restricted. People or buildings were not harmed. -

Pendant des semaines, l'Etna crache lave et de cendres, et a connu son apogée des éruptions dans la nuit du 2 au 3 Décembre: Un des plus violentes éruptions des 20 dernières années, la poursuite d'un kilomètre de haut fontaine de roche en fusion dans le ciel; certaines roches ont été à même marqué trois kilomètres de haut. Fortes retombées de cendres sur le nord-est de la Sicile, et le trafic aérien a été temporairement restreint. Pas de dommages aux personnes ou des bâtiments.

Piton de La Fournaise...aktiv, was sonst?


Es ist der 2. Ausbruch in diesem Jahr, 47 wurden allein seit 1950 registriert. Der Piton de la Fournaise gehört damit zu den aktivsten Vulkanen der Welt. -

It is the second eruption this year, 47 have been registered alone since 1950 which makes Piton de la Fournaise to one of the world's most active volcanoes.-

Le Piton de la Fournaise est entré en éruption ce dimanche 17 mai. L’accès au volcan est interdit jusqu’à nouvel ordre.
L’éruption était imminente, une intensification de l’activité sismique ayant été enregistrée ces dernières heures. Et le piton de la Fournaise, à La Réunion, a commencé à cracher de la lave cet après-midi, dimanche 17 mai. L’éruption a débuté dans le secteur sud de l’enclos, au pied du sommet, dans la région du cratère Château-Fort.

L’alerte 2 du dispositif Orsec volcan, éruption en cours, a été activée par la préfecture. Le public ne peut avoir accès à l’enclos du piton de la Fournaise.
Toutefois, en raison du brouillard qui recouvre les pentes et le sommet du volcan, une observation directe est pour le moment difficile.

Island, ein Vulkan, Asche und der Flugverkehr

Grimsvötn- Schon nach einer Stunde war die Asch-und Rauchwolke elf Kilometer hoch -

Schon wieder Island. Grimsvötn. Diesmal ist der Name leichter und die Asche schwerer, was angeblich helfen soll, dass sich der Flugverkehr in normaleren Bahnen abspielt verglichen mit letztem Jahr, als der Vulkan Eyjafjallajökull vom 15.-23. April für unvergessliche Turbulenzen auf europäischen Flughäfen sorgte.-

Iceland again. Grimsvotn. This time the name is easier on the lips and the ashes heavier, making the particles sink faster which sounds good news when one is about to assess the impact on air traffic. Unforgettable the turbulences on European airports between 15 and 23 April.

Der Vulkan Grímsvötn befindet sich unterhalb des Vatnajökull-Gletschers in einem unbewohnten Gebiet im Südosten von Island. Die Verbreitung der Asche hat selbst in bewohnten Gegenden, die 400 Kilometer (249 Meilen) entfernt sind, für apokalyptische Bilder von verlassenen Bauernhöfen und verdunkelten Straßen gesorgt.

Der Ausbruch des Grimsvötn Vulkan war 10-mal stärker als der des Eyjafjallajokull Vulkans, der im vergangenen Jahr den europäischen Luftraum fast komplett zum Erliegen gebracht hat.-

Situated under the Vatnajokull glacier, Grímsvötn occupies an uninhabited area in the southeast of Iceland. The spreading ash has already affected residents of towns as far as 400 kilometers (249 miles) away, making for apocalyptic photos of deserted farms and darkened city streets. The eruption in Grimsvotn volcano was 10 times more powerful than the Eyjafjallajokull volcano that shut down European airspace last year.

Die große Frage: Welche Flughäfen sind diesmal betroffen und für wie lange?

Die ersten Flüge wurden in Island selbst annuliert, gefolgt von Grönland und Norwegen.
Dienstag waren in Europa rund 500 Flüge abgesagt worden, bei insgesamt 29.000 Starts und Landungen. Betroffen waren vor allem Verbindungen von und nach Schottland. Heute traf es mit rund 700 Flügen Norddeutschland mit den Flughäfen in Bremen, Hamburg und Berlin, morgen vielleicht Frankreich und Spanien. Die Entscheidung, ob der Luftraum gesperrt wird, trifft jeder Staat selbst. Die EU-Luftsicherheitsexperten des Krisenzentrums EACCC geben nur Empfehlungen ab.

Wie auch immer:
Experten sind sich bislang einig, dass dieser Vulkanausbruch weniger Folgen haben wird als letztes Jahr, denn auch der Wind ist günstiger, bislang kam es nicht dazu, dass Asche in Höhen getragen wird, die für den Flugverkehr von Relevanz ist.-


The big question is: For how long and where will the air traffic be affected?
The first airports to close were the major ones in Iceland on Monday, followed by airports in Scotland, Greenland and Norway on Tuesday. In total, 500 flights of 29000 starts and landings in Europe were cancelled yesterday, today it's the turn of northern Germany with airports in Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg affected and 700 flights cancelled, tomorrow it might be France and Spain. Due to a recommendation of European airspace experts (EACCC), each country is to decide for themselves. However:

"It is not likely to be anything on the scale that was produced last year when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted," University of Iceland geophysicist Pall Einarsson told the Associated Press. "That was an unusual volcano, an unusual ash size distribution and unusual weather pattern, which all conspired together to make life difficult in Europe." (source)

"The air traffic shutdown over most of northern Europe from 15-23 April wreaked havoc on travellers, airlines and airports.This year's eruption is different because high-level winds (including the north Atlantic jet stream) are in different locations. During the Eyjafjallajökull eruptions last year, the jet stream was in precisely the spot where it could suck in ash from the volcano and spread it across Europe at the same altitude used by airliners. The current Grimsvötn eruption hasn't (yet) coincided with a jet stream." (source)

Eines der ersten 'Opfer' war übrigens Barack Obama, er musste wegen der Aschewolke seinen Irlandbesuch kürzen. Und, was war letztes Jahr?

By the way, one of the first victims of the ash clouds was President Obama, he had to shorten his stay in Ireland. Remember last year?

Einfluss auf Flüge nach Mauritius und Rodrigues dürften bislang minimal geblieben sein, bislang habe ich dazu nichts gefunden. Letzte Meldungen sprechen davon, dass Flugeinschränkungen heute schneller aufgehoben werden konnten als wie zuerst erwartet. Also Hoffnung nicht nur für Obamas Reisepläne in den kommeden Tagen...!-

Flights to Mauritius and Rodrigues have probably not been affected until now, at least I haven't heard anything so far. And good news: German airports could reopen earlier as expected today. So there is hope not only for Obama's traveling plans...!

Vom 15. - 23. April kommt der Flugverkehr im gesamten europäischen Raum zum Erliegen. Auch der Flugverkehr nach Mauritius ist betroffen.-

From 15 to 23 April the air traffic in nearly all European countries has to be cancelled with huge impact on the tourism industry. The flights to Mauritius too are affected.
