Moon Shadows on Robin

Robin and Moon Shadows
Skywatcher David M. captured this view of crescent shadows cast on a robin by the annular solar eclipse of May 20, 2012 from Denver, Colo.
Mai.-

On Monday, when I was looking for some photos showing the first annular solar eclipse visible for Americans in 18 years, I found the photo showing the robin and moon shadows first, nearly at the same time I learned about Robin Gibb's much too early death at 62 after a long battle against cancer on the very same day of the eclipse.

And the globe stood still Sunday as the moon partially blocked the sun
Photo: Charles Medendorp/New Mexico

Not exactly flying rings around the moon as it was the moon passing between Earth and the sun, but I had to think of that old Bee Gees song...

Photo: Michael Underwood/near Lake City/Colorado

And sure these lyrics from another song came also into my mind

Down came the sun
The world has finally won
Boom goes the moon
We wonder why it happened so soon

RIP, Robin Gibb!

After nearly three weeks between anxiety, hope, fear and prayer, Tuesday afternoon there was really a reason to rejoice when I learned that Valerie was taken from the artificial coma and responding to speech, she was able to move some limbs and on top of it she was even able to speak a little bit with some effort.Later on Tuesday she had to be assisted again for respiration as she was still too agitated. Today the doctors have continued to keep her out of the artificial coma, in general she is less and less assisted by machines.
Though it is still too early to relax fully, but for me, and certainly not just for me, these have been the best news ever! Dearest Valérie, keep it up, in thoughts you are being supported by many, many friends in Rodrigues, who miss you all very much, and that not just because of your marvelous cakes!

Trois Soleil
Photo copyright: Diensen Pamben

Last year, photojournalist Diensen Pamben visited Rodrigues and has taken this great photo. I do not know exactly when Christophe, better known as Gaiki, the artist, had completed these three suns located in the village of Trois Soleil, for me they belong to Rodrigues as our wide turquoise lagoon.

Today, the cyclone season 2011/2012 has officially come to an end which is somehow also connected with the beginning of winter in our region. In fact, the night temperatures have gone down quite a bit for some weeks already, but during day times I am still sweating ... And considering the three suns extra shining on us in Rodrigues, that does not come as a big surprise, doesn't it ...))

- Many thanks to Diensen Pamben who allowed me to use his photo, he promised me to upload soon some other photos of Rodrigues, you can bet, I am waiting impatiently...-

Der Herr der Yachten...The Lord of the Yachts

A man, a bike: James Waterstone is known in Port Mathurin like a coloured dog. Every day he is on his way to the harbor on the lookout for incoming yachts. For over 30 years.

At some point, James began to create books in which he glued photos he got and now he lets visitors record their own notes and greetings .

June 2009
Photo:Hide Seki from S/Y Polaire

Staying in James Waterstone's House, he proudly presents his volumes of visitor books with yacht photos of recent years. Many friendships have grown –formed from these contacts, says James. Many lasting until today.

The Lord of the Yachts

AN ELDERLY MAN KEEPS DRIVING WITH HIS RICKETY BIKE ON THE BRIDGE AT PORT OF PORT MATHURIN. HIS NAME: JAMES WATERSTONE.

For James, this Monday is a special day, as for most Rodriguans: At the intersection of Johnston Street / Rue de la Solidarité, the so-called New Market opens its gates to dealers, customers and the curious for the first time today. The realisation of the project took several years, fences blocking the view. Today, finally, the barriers fall. The old market, which is located a bit farther, just past the container storage area of the harbor, had closed its doors on Saturday before. James, with a green cap, neatly ironed red plaid shirt and gray pants is parking his bike and waits. Then it is start and go: The commissioners of the island cut the tape with large silver scissors, which symbolically has been separating the audience from the New Market. A band is playing on. Sega dancers are swinging their hips. Anyone who could make it is there. James visits the modern concrete building, which is also meant to resist strong cyclones. The last one is still well in his memory: In 2003, it passed strolling with only eight km per hour in 30 kilometers distance southeast of the small Mascarene island. Months later, there was no fresh fruit. Most trees were knocked down. Many shacks of the poorest of the inhabitants were knocked down all the same. Birgit Rudolph, who has been living on the island since 1997, even saw a little dog flying by at her window. James was spared by the storm. His simple, small stone house with a fixed roof and a solid door is located just a bit west of the Baie aux-Huitres, Oyster Bay, near the Pre-Primary school "Cardinal".

Around 1800 his great-great grandfather, John Waterstone , originally from Ireland, came to Mauritius. A few years later, William, his son (and James' great-grandfather), then felt drawn to move to the island of Rodrigues, 650 km away. There he was responsible for a boat of the Navy. Boats, sailing yachts in particular, have intrigued James Waterstone too who was eventually born in 1938. The tall, slim and friendly elderly gentleman invites us to his home. He offers cookies and juice. On the wall hangs a black forest cuckoo clock, made in Taiwan, purchased on a Mauritian market. Plastic flowers adorn the small, neat living room. Curtains with Chinese characters serve as doors to bedroom and kitchen. Every half an hour an electric clock announces the time with a creaking French voice. Each time, shortly thereafter, the Mauritius cuckoo calls. Since the ‘80s, James, who worked his way up from a prison warden to a court servant, goes to the harbor. Every day. With his black, perfectly maintained bike that looks a bit nostalgic. In 1966, he bought it for not even 250 rupees, the equivalent of just over six Euros. James' passion: documenting all incoming yachts in Port Mathurin.
Since it is the only port in Rodrigues all sailing yachts who need to stock up or who have something to fix, have to call and moor there. A typical Stop Over port since there is not much to see at the 18 kilometers long and eight kilometers wide island, if you're just passing through. When the boats have passed through the narrow harbor entrance, the route only marked by some stakes through the reef, then James is often already there. He takes the lines and says a friendly hello. It all started with a yacht owner, with whom he had been in touch. Who gave him a farewell photo of himself and his boat. James asked him to write a dedication on the back of the picture. Just like that, in memory of the great conversation they had. Said and done. Since then, James Waterstone has been collecting photos and notes from yacht owners who have come to the island. Later he began to glue the pictures in books, asking the visitors to record their notes and greetings in them. Six thick volumes have grown since then until now. One was stolen from a tourist who had visited him at home, mentioning this, some anger gets into the voice of the usually cheerful, friendly man.

During one year’s season an average of 20 yachts arrive, says James. That makes in 21 years 420 boats, all of which are documented in his books. Most likely there are a lot more, because in recent seasons Rodrigues was visited by up to 50 yachts. The sailors would take more time now, "because of the pirates." He does it for purely personal reasons and just for fun, says James, and he smiles. Many friendships were formed . Germans are also documented among the owners. Such as the visit of the FREYDIS which has been meticulously recorded too. "Home Port: Cuxhaven, Germany. Arrival: 19 July, departure: 1 August 2001. Visiting Rodrigues has been a great pleasure and a positive experience." The ones who have written this ten years ago next to a bonded black and white photo in James Waterstone’s book are no lesser than the circumnavigators Erich and Heide Wilts.

But for James it is not only about his exclusive collection. He has always been helpful, providing contacts for repairs or for washing clothes or giving information on shopping trips. Even for thirsty sailors he has a handy tip: Minko, just behind the harbor, in the "5th Avenue of Rodrigues' , is the place for well-chilled, local Phoenix beer in 0.65-liter bottles.

Today is "Pay Day", and all tables are occupied by men, much to the unwillingness of their Rodriguan wives. Minko is something like the "Café Sport" of Rodrigues. Maybe not as fancy. But here, too, sailors - in addition to harbour workers and locals – will drink their first beer after a long abstinence at sea. A must for incoming circumnavigators - just like a visit to James Waterstone in Oyster Bay.

Start-up tip for intrepids: Minko's bar near the docks

Maurice Sendak....With the wild things now

Maurice Sendak died yesterday at the age of 83. He has inspired generations of kids and adults likewise with his books full of imagination. The "Picasso of kids" as the New York Times once called him might now be on his way to where the wild things are, hopefully meeting Jennie his dog and his long-time companion with whom he shared his life for half a century and who proceeded him 2007 in May.

"Max, who starts the Wild Rumpus in Where The Wild Things Are after misbehaving in his real life, is every child's fantasy of escape, of going somewhere where you're understood, you're accepted, you can fashion your own crown and make your own rules-- and most importantly, where you can leave and come home and be taken care of again."

“And [he] sailed back over a year
and in and out of weeks
and through a day
and into the night of his very own room
where he found his supper waiting for him
and it was still hot

Jennie is a Sealyham terrier. She has everything a dog could possibly want, but she thinks 'there must be more to life' and sets off on an adventure.

About Sendak's Little Bear stories

Serieously, who does not know them....?

Sendak's latest "Bumble-Ardy", published in 2011

"Bumble-Ardy is a pig, raised by an aunt, who is built like a house and who lives in a house that looks like a ruin. This aunt is doing her best with poor Bumble, a child who was orphaned when his parents “gorged and gained weight. / And got ate.” That tragic turn of events may have been for the best, as Bumble’s lousy parents never once got around to throwing the boy a birthday party (his birthday is June 10, the same as Sendak’s). So, on his ninth birthday, Bumble secretly invites over terrifying hordes of local swine, who arrive in disguise for a bacchanalia of “birthday cake and brine.” The party ends in hoggish chaos, in tears and threats of slaughter—and, finally, with a measure of forgiveness."

Please read the interview, it's about Sendak, his love for pigs, his last birthday, the importance of music, about the confusion in kids and the way they often feel unprotected...You might get a glimpse of who he was...

Thank you, Mr. Sendak, wherever world you are heading to now,
as long as there are kids this one will not forget you...

Sarkozy - Hollande....Die Entscheidung

Been plucked already in the first round, Sarkozy has failed in his race for re-election. With 51.2Hollande did not fall from the cock but will from now on take the fate of France in his hands, hopefully with skill.

It's today that we will know in the course of the evening who will have come in ahead with the finish line of the 2nd round of the presidential elections in France. Whether Sarkozy will have more time in the future for Bruni and their offspring or if at the end it is Hollande who will fall from the cock, theoretically, this could be decided in Mauritius. After all, it's voting time here too. Of about 10000-15000 French expatriates or tourists staying in Mauritius, 7074 are registered as eligible to vote for this year's elections.

However, the turnout in the 1st round showed with 46 % a rather poor participation, 3300 valid votes were counted , although for the first time even 3 polling stations were provided. And similar to the presidential elections before in 2007, the trend in Mauritius was clear, the majority voted right. Sarkozy received 1656 votes, Hollande 838. Reunion saw this very differently, Sarkozy's visit a few weeks ago did not help him much, he managed to get only 17.96%, whereas Hollande received 53.29% of the votes there.

22.04.2012 in Mauritius

Jeder frz.Botschaftsangehörige kann dies für 3 andere frz. Wahlberechtigte tun.-

Also French expatriates in Rodrigues are called to go to the polls. 30 families live here with about 60 voters. Since there is no polling station here, a few weeks ago a member of the French Embassy came to get of those who do not vote in Mauritius themselves a signed document, entitling the embassy staff in Mauritius to vote for them. Each French embassy staff member can do this for 3 other voters.

Alle Resultate der 1. Runde gibt es hier. -

Edvard Munch...Seelenmalerei oder die teuerste Depression der Weltgeschichte

Edvard Munch: Der Schrei
Ausschnitt dpa

Whether a symbol of the fears and insecurity of modern man, or, as the German newspaper taz put it, "an emotional outburst, which reverberates to this day," Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream" has this week broken all the records concerning the resale value of a painting in an auction.

The image of a stylized uttering a scream under a blood red sky, was the only painting of a series of four which was still privately owned. One version is owned by the Norwegian state-owned National Museum, the other two are kept in the Munch Museum in Oslo.

The Norwegian Edvard Munch was 29 years old and suffering from a bipolar disorder, when he began in Paris with the preliminary sketches. He came up with four versions between the years 1895 and 1910 of the image - two in two oil and pastel, part of a cycle " that was influenced by the earlier death of his father and the apocalyptic background of the fin de siècle, the fear of death and fear of life."

107 million dollars in only 13 minutes scored the painting -hence the "most expensive depression ever in world history."
