Hallo, Ihr Lieben! - Hello, my dears!

Jetzt ist mir auch klar, warum mein Wasserhahn aus Italien kommt. Mein Vermieter hat 27 Jahre mit seiner Frau in Palermo gelebt und auch einen italienischen Pass. Sein Chinesisch hat er inzwischen verlernt, denn davor hat er in Macao gearbeitet. Irgendwas in Technik, meint er. Um den Hausbau zu beaufsichtigen, sind sie zurück gekommen. Aber sie vermissen Italien sehr. Auch, weil die Spaghetti hier so teuer sind. Wenn man ihn so sieht, denkt man gar nicht, dass er außerdem noch Hindi, Kreol, Englisch und Französisch spricht. Der Sohn ist in Italien geblieben, um dort die Schule zu beenden.

Now I also understand why my tap comes from Italy. My host lived in Palermo with his wife for 27 years and he also has an Italian passport. Für Mauritius ist es enorm wichtig kein Hochrisikogebiet mehr zu sein. Die Insel lebt vom Tourismus. Es gab einen längeren Bericht im Fernsehen über Corona und die Lage in Deutschland speziell, in dem auch Herr Lauterbach lange sprach.
Angela Merkel genießt ein hohes Ansehen und viel Vertrauen. Dass sie jetzt Rentnerin ist, haben die meisten noch gar nicht mitgekriegt. Und den Neuen kennt eh keiner.

For Mauritius it is extremely important not to be a high risk area anymore. The island lives from tourism. There was a longer report on TV about Corona and the situation in Germany in particular, in which Mr. Lauterbach also spoke for a long time. Angela Merkel is highly regarded and trusted. Most of them have not even noticed that she is now a pensioner. And nobody knows the new one anyway.

Ananas gibt’s an jeder Ecke zu kaufen. Aber sie schmeckt mir nicht und riecht auch nicht, denn sie wird auf riesigen Plantagen angebaut und mit was auch immer gedüngt. Bananen sind auch oft aus, weil es hier zu viele Affen gibt, wie mir ein Verkäufer augenzwinkernd sagt.
Schade, dass Goodlands so weit weg ist, denn dort gab’s einen richtigen Markt mit krummen Gurken, schrumpeligen Kartoffeln, kleinen leckeren Tomaten und Bauern, die ihre eigene angebaute Ananas verkauft haben. Neulich habe ich beobachtet, wie morgens die Obststände an den Straßen beliefert werden, d.h. ein Lieferfahrzeug stoppt kurz und schmeißt die Säcke mit den Mangos, Ananas, Litschis etc. dem Verkäufer vor die Füße. Also eigentlich egal, wo man kauft!

You can buy pineapples on every corner. But I don't like it or smell it, because it is grown on huge plantations and fertilized with whatever. Bananas are also often out because there are too many monkeys here, as one seller tells me with a wink. It's a shame that Goodlands is so far away, because there was a real market there with crooked cucumbers, wrinkled potatoes, tasty small tomatoes and farmers who sold their own pineapples. The other day I watched the morning delivery to the fruit stands on the streets, i.e. a delivery vehicle stops briefly and throws the sacks of mangoes, pineapples, lychees, etc. at the seller's feet. So it doesn't really matter where you buy!

Weil Sylvester für die arbeitende Bevölkerung in diesem Jahr ein Wochenende ist, hat das Goverment den Montag freundlicherweise als Public Holiday ausgerufen. Richtung Strände zog sich eine einzige Fahrzeugschlange. Obwohl der Weg vom Parkplatz zum Strand nur 200-300 Meter beträgt, sitzen einige direkt am Wagen auf ihren Stühlen und picknicken da.

Because New Year's Eve is a weekend for the working population this year, the government has kindly declared Monday a public holiday. A single line of vehicles pulled itself towards the beaches. Jeden Tag Strand ist langweilig. Darum spaziere ich gerne abseits der Hauptstraßen und auch gerne durch Viertel, wo schon mal ein Kühlschrank am Wegesrand liegt. Aber auch hier gibt’s Menschen, die in alte Autoreifen Blumen pflanzen und so ihren Ort verschönern. Alle sind entspannt und grüßen freundlich.

Every day at the beach is boring. That's why I like to walk off the main streets and also like to walk through neighborhoods where a refrigerator is sometimes on the side of the road. Am Verbrennungsplatz steigt dichter Qualm auf, weil grad versucht wird, einen Scheiterhaufen von fast einem Meter Höhe anzustecken. Ca 10 Männer sitzen gelangweilt in dem überdachten Häuschen und dödeln mit ihren Telefonen rum. Keine Zeremonie oder Priester in weißen Gewändern. Nichts. So verbrennt man auch Unrat!

Mit meinem Freund A. habe ich viele Nächte in der Bamboo-Bar auf Rodrigues durchgetanzt. Jetzt laufen wir uns in Grand Baie über den Weg und erkennen uns trotz Masken und Mützen. Ein Blick in die Augen genügt! Er eröffnete damals die erste Cocktailbar in Grand Baie und betreibt immer irgendwelche dubiosen Geschäfte. Jemanden von Rodrigues zu treffen, hat mich unglaublich gefreut.

With my friend A. I danced through many nights in the Bamboo Bar on Rodrigues. Now we run into each other in Grand Bay and recognize each other despite our masks and hats. One look into each others eye is enough! At that time he opened the first cocktail bar in Grand Bay and always runs some dubious business. It made me incredibly happy to meet someone from Rodrigues.

Ich suche mir immer die längsten Busverbindungen raus. Außerdem ist Riviere du Rempart so ein Ort, der keine Touristen anzieht. Dem Obst und Gemüse sieht man an, dass es frisch vom Baum und Feld kommt. Alles ist billiger, weil hier nur Einheimische einkaufen.
Das Ehepaar am Straßenrand macht keine Handarbeiten, sondern repariert Schuhe. Ich habe vorher gefragt, ob ich sie fotografieren kann.

I always look for the longest bus connections. Also, Riviere du Rempart is one of those places that doesn't attract tourists. You can tell from the fruits and vegetables that they come fresh from the trees and fields. Everything is cheaper because only locals shop here. The couple on the roadside do not do any handicrafts, but repair shoes. I asked beforehand if I could take a picture of them.

Die großen Kinos in den Orten sind jetzt überwiegend Lagerhäuser. Nur das Kino in Triolet zeigt noch indische Filme.Das Hinweisschild für ein Eisenbahnmuseum steht schon lange an einem alten Bahnhof der Linie, die mal die ganze Insel von Nord nach Süd verband. Schade, dass dafür kein Geld vorhanden ist. Mir scheint es werden nur Straßen und Kreisverkehre gebaut.
Auch gibt’s etliche Autowerkstätten und Waschanlagen. Die kleine Fahrradwerkstatt war echt was besonderes, genau wie das Gebäude. Der Schrauber war 86 Jahre alt, das aus Felssteinen gebaute Haus nur wenige Jahre jünger.

The large cinemas in the towns are now mostly warehouses. Only the cinema in Triolet still shows Indian films.The sign for a railway museum has been standing for a long time at an old station on the line that once connected the entire island from north to south. It's a shame there's no money for it. It seems to me that only roads and roundabouts are being built.
There are also quite a few car repair shops and car washes. The small bicycle repair shop was really something special, just like the building itself. The mechanic was 86 years old, the stone building only a few years younger.

Ein fast bequemer Bus schaukelt gemütlich durch die Zuckerrohrplantagen von Ost nach West. Statt Kreisverkehr gibt’s Kreuzungen mit alten Holzschildern immer mit Blick zum zweithöchsten Berg Pieter Both (820 Meter), der nach dem ersten Generalgouverneur Pieter Both von Niederländisch-Ostindien benannt ist.

Er ist eine der landschaftlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten auf Mauritius und gilt als Nationalsymbol. Es sieht so aus, als balanciere der Berg einen ballförmigen Stein auf der Spitze. Um ihn zu besteigen, benötigt man alpine Erfahrungen.
Um die markante Felsformation ranken sich verschiedene Mythen und Sagen. So heißt es im Volksmund, solange der runde Stein dort oben auf der Spitze des Berges verweile, geht es Mauritius gut. Bis 1968 hieß es, die britische Regierung würde Mauritius erst dann in die Unabhängigkeit entlassen, wenn der Stein herunter fallen würde.
Auch sah der Milchmann Santaka eines Tages Feen auf dem Berg tanzen. Als er sein Versprechen brach und von den Feen berichtete, verwandelten diese ihn in Stein und setzten ihn auf die Spitze des Berges.

An almost comfortable bus sways leisurely through the sugar cane plantations from east to west. Instead of roundabouts, there are crossings with old wooden signs, always with a view of the second highest mountain, Pieter Both (820 meters), which is named after the first Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, Pieter Both.

It is one of the scenic attractions in Mauritius and is considered a national symbol. It looks like the mountain is balancing a ball-shaped stone on the top. To climb it, you need alpine experience. Various myths and legends entwine around the striking rock formation. Popular wisdom says that as long as the round stone lingers up there on the top of the mountain, Mauritius is fine. Ein einfacher Spaziergang führt auf den 8 Meter höheren Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire (828 Meter), also dem höchsten Berg, im Südwesten der Insel. Der Rundumblick von der Spitze ist beeindruckend. (Ich war natürlich schon mal oben!)

Endstation der Busfahrt ist die auf einem Hochplateau gelegene drittgrößte Stadt Beau Bassin-Rose Hill im Centrum der Insel mit über 100.000 Einwohnern. Ein Ort mit vielen kleinen wuseligen Geschäften. Wie früher, denke ich. Das Einkaufszentrum ist sicherlich irgendwo außerhalb. Eine heiße Boulette (ich hoffe den Namen einigermaßen richtig geschrieben zu haben) gibt’s nicht mehr überall. Also erstmal Pause und was essen. Man stellt sich seine Suppe selbst zusammen und wählt aus Fleisch-Gemüse-Tofu-oder Fischbällchen was man mag. Aus einem großen Topf wird dann Brühe aufgefüllt, ein paar Gewürze und Schnittlauch. In einer kleinen Nebenstraße entdecke ich eine kleine Lourdes-Grotte, die sehr stark besucht ist.

The end of the bus journey is the third largest town, Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, located on a high plateau in the center of the island with over 100,000 inhabitants. A place with many small ones bustling shops. Like before, I think. The mall is certainly somewhere outside. A hot Boulette (I hope I spelled the name more or less correctly) is no longer available everywhere. So first a break and eat something. You put together your own soup and choose what you like from meat, vegetables, tofu or fish balls. A large pot is then used to fill up the broth, a few spices and chives. In a small side street I discover a small Lourdes grotto that is very popular.

Rose Hill hat eine Metro-Station. Weil es grad beim Einsteigen einen kurzen Schauer gibt, fällt mir auf, dass das Dach des Bahnsteigs nicht bis an den Zug heranreicht. Allerliebst.

Für Kaffee und Kuchen in meinem Lieblings-Café in Port Louis ist noch Zeit. Denn danach geht’s wieder mit dem Bus weiter. Auch wenn ich ja nur durch die Gegend fahre und aus dem Fenster schaue, bin ich abends nach solchen Touren fix und fertig und gehe dann was essen. Die Mitglieder einer größeren Familie am Nebentisch reichen ihre Masken der Mutter, die sie dann gebündelt in die Handtasche steckte. Ordnung muss sein!

There's still time for coffee and cake in my favorite café in Port Louis. Because after that, the bus continues again. Even though I'm just driving around and looking out the window, I'm completely exhausted after such trips in the evening and then I go out for something to eat.The members of a larger family at the next table hand their masks to their mother, who then bundled them into her purse. Order has to prevail!

Nur einmal bin ich mit dem Bus nochmal zum Cap Malheureux gefahren, um auch auf dem Friedhof zu sehen, wieviele neue Gräber es gibt. Ja, die COVID-19-Abteilung ist gewachsen.

I only took the bus to Cap Malheureux once again, to see how many new graves there were in the cemetery. Yes, the COVID-19 section has grown.

Die großen Hotels haben kaum Gäste. Mit einem Handtuch muss keiner seine Liege am Pool reservieren. Ein trauriger Anblick.

The large hotels have hardly any guests. No one needs to reserve their sun lounger by the pool with a towel. A sad sight.

Hier im pottflachen Norden ist es zur Zeit sehr drückend. In der Mitte und im Süden der Insel schüttet es seit Tagen. Wahrscheinlich bleiben die Regenwolken an den hohen Bergen hängen.
Also nach dem Frühstück spontan entscheiden und dann los.

Here in the flat north it is oppressively hot at the moment. It has been raining in the middle and south of the island for days. The rain clouds are likely to stick to the high mountains. So after breakfast it's deciding spontaneously, and then off I go.

P.S. Nur wenn ich jetzt die öffentlichen Toiletten benutze, setze ich vorher meine Mütze ab, weil man mich meistens Richtung Herrenklo schickt. Sonst habe ich keine Probleme. Mir geht’s gut.
