Desmond Tutu - Südafrikas moralischer Wächter hat uns verlassen...A Tribute

Today, Desmond Tutu, who passed away on December 26th at the age of 90, is being buried.

In his memory, here is an article I found in the German daily newspaper TAZ, which I enjoyed, particularly because it mentioned the importance of Trevor Huddleston.

Trevor Huddleston

No introduction needed....

Desmond Tutu with his wife Nomalizo Leah Tutu (DB 14.10.1933) who he married in 1955.

She was an activist too.

South Africa's moral guardian Desmond Tutu was South Africa's most prominent black voice for freedom during apartheid. Now he has died at the age of 90.

He was the last of the great heroes of South Africa who gave the struggle against apartheid a moral stature that was respected worldwide. The death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu on December 26th in Cape Town at the age of 90 is, as President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his funeral message, “another chapter of loss in our nation's departure from a generation of outstanding South Africans who made us a liberated South Africa Lindiwe Sisulu, daughter of Mandela colleague Walter Sisulu, who died in 2003, puts it more simply: "He changed the course of history," she tweeted. "He taught us the power of peace and reconciliation."

While Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and the other leaders of the banned African National Congress (ANC) were locked away on the prison island Robben Island, Tutu was the most prominent public voice of the black resistance against white minority rule and everyday racist terror. For the white President P.W. Botha he was the "number one enemy of the people". For South Africa's blacks, he was the epitome of fearlessness.

In his bishop's robes he led tens of thousands of illegal protest marches and spoke at the gigantic, also illegal, funeral ceremonies of those killed in the resistance. "If Christ were to return to South Africa today, he would be safely arrested under security laws for his concern for the poor, the hungry and the downtrodden," he preached. At the funeral of the anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko, who was murdered in 1977, he preached: "Pray for the rulers in this country, for the police, especially the security police and those in prison, so that they will understand that they are human too."

It was such words that made Tutu so dangerous for the apartheid terror regime: he did not allow himself to be pushed into the terror and communism corner, he had nothing to do with violence, he turned the Christian faith against a regime that was itself thought to be a Christian bastion in Africa. He gave courage to people by being courageous himself. In 1984 he received the Nobel Peace Prize and advocated bringing white South Africa to its knees with severe sanctions.

Perhaps none of this would have happened had it not been for a large white model that had opened the doors. The British white Anglican priest Trevor Huddleston, who has been working in Johannesburg since 1943, opened the seminary and an associated high school to blacks, which Desmond, who was born in 1931 as the son of a teacher and a cleaning lady and who had childhood polio, went to.

Tutu later remembered the formative experience of the White Huddleston taking off his hat to his black mother - they had never experienced anything like it. During his training for priests in London in the 1960s, Tutu first learned what equality looks like: police officers spoke to him politely, whites did not jostle in front of him in queues, he could attend concerts.

When Tutu returned home in 1967, his future path was clear. He rose in the Anglican Church, which was dominated by white but not in agreement with apartheid, and became the first black dean of Johannesburg Cathedral, general secretary of the Council of Churches of Southern Africa and finally Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. This made him the most powerful worldwide black voice in South Africa in the last years of apartheid, before Nelson Mandela was released in 1990.

His deep faith was the basis of his fearlessness. Man, Archbishop Tutu preached, is God's agent on earth and his job is to do good and right. For him, this establishes the legitimacy of resistance to injustice and solidarity with victims of oppression, as one of his most famous quotes puts it: “If you are neutral towards injustice, you have taken the side of the oppressor. If an elephant stands on a mouse's tail and you say you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. "

Tutu is said to have invented the term “rainbow nation” for the “new South Africa”. Correct South African media: At the funeral of the black communist leader Chris Hani, who was murdered by a white right-wing extremist in 1993 when the overcoming of apartheid threatened to turn into civil war, the archbishop preached: “We are God's rainbow people. We march towards freedom, black and white together ”.

After South Africa's first general election in 1994, when Mandela became president, Desmond Tutu headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which dealt with crimes during the apartheid period. In this role, the South African public experienced him as the morali  voice that he had been international during apartheid.

He was already suffering from prostate cancer, but even after the end of the TRC work in 1998 he traveled tirelessly the world and exercised solidarity with other oppressed, from Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar to the Palestinians under the Israeli occupation, which he described as apartheid.

In 2010 the now 79-year-old Tutu retired into private life. He no longer wants to spend most of his time in hotels and airports, but rather “read and write, pray and think” with his family, he said. But he never fell silent. He became a harsh critic of corruption and abuse of power in the ANC and even declared that he could no longer vote for the old liberation movement.

Tutu remained the constant admonisher to the end, calling on South Africa to “do the right thing”, as he put it - for example to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

But Desmond Tutu is not remembered as a preacher in his country. South Africa loves him above all because of his courage, his confidence and above all because of his humor, South African coarse and often untranslatable. His dancing in purple bishop's robes has become legendary, his loud, contagious, giggling laughter, his often lewd sayings.

To get a Nobel Prize, he once explained to a child, you have to "have a simple name, tutu for example, a big nose and sexy legs". When he published a children's book in old age, at the book launch he explained how he imagined his death to be: He knocked on heaven, but Peter turned him away and sent him "to a warmer place"; After a few days, Satan comes to Peter and asks for protection for himself from his new entry in Hell. Now South Africa will be curious to see how it really turns out.

Tutu died peacefully at home at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, his family announced. With him the country has lost an irreplaceable authority, as President Ramaphosa's mourning message acknowledges: "May his soul rest in peace, but his spirit watch over the future of our nation."

Two Nobel Peace Prize laureates who liked each other...:))

More to Trevor Huddleston:

Trevor Huddleston's book "Naught for Your Comfort", 1956

My personal connection to Trevor Huddleston is the story how our school for the diasabled children in Rodrigues, adjacent to Care-Co where I work became the Trevor Huddleston House, a tribute to the arch bishop who helped to found Craft Aid Mauritius. Craft Aid Mauritius was founded by my boss, Paul Draper, along with two other Mauritians and Trevor Huddleston, then Bishop of Mauritius and Archbishop of the Indian Ocean. This was way before Care-Co, but with the same goal: to provide paid employment for adults with disabilities. Between 1989 and 2002, Care-Co Rodrigues was called Craft Aid Rodrigues. source

Ein charmanter Besuch....Une visite charmante...Charming visitors at Care-Co & Mikado reloaded

During the two weeks vacation after the 1st trimester, unlike in Germany with our two semester years, the school year is divided here into 3 segments, we got a visit of two charming young ladies at Care-Co.

Yriah and Yriana, are two of the four daughters of Eric, one of our employees, and they liked it so much that they visited their father again during the second week of vacation.

Yriahna (6 years ) & Yriah (9 years)

Their first names are even for Rodriguan standards rather unusual, where parents always choose the names of their children with great care. I was curious and took a quick look to see what their names mean.-

Calm, patient, thoughtful, moving at her own pace not bothering about criticism or the common logic. Intuitive, loving travel and adventure of all sorts, feeling ar ease in many areas.Good at doing things alone and in teams. Not liking routines. Dynamic, enterprising and strong. Also introverted and leaving a scent of mystery.  A very selective and demanding person with sense for diversity-

Independent, autonomous or even self-taught. Not liking daily routines, monotony and obligations.Curious and exploratory, new challenges and adventures feel exciting. Outgoing, lively, cheerful, creative and intuitive, sometimes a bit stubborn. Also a bit extravagant with a liking of being surrounded by beautiful things.Very attached to her friends who come from all sides and from all backgrounds. Strong sense for diversity.-

However, on their second visit, I appointed them on the spot my assistants, a challenge both of them gladly accepted. So we visited Christio and Nicodème, who were both just cleaning the windows, because that too has to be done at Care-Co from time to time, Yriah and Yriana thought that the work they had done so far was OK and later went back, without me, to check on the progress of the work. -

So much initiative had to be rewarded! There was really only one thing to consider, a game!-

Mikado, was sonst?- Mikado, what else? - Mikado, quoi donc?

One thing is for sure, endurance and concentration have to belong in the list of their name properties too!-

It was nice to have them here.

By the way, with their younger sister and their father Eric, they had to wait a long time for their mother to return from Mauritius after the lockdown was imposed, she was only repatriated by the end of May, not an easy experience for the two girls and their 3-year-old sister, we hope to be able to welcome her too at CareCo one day. One thing we already know about her, she too has a very unique name.
