A Tree not only for Bats ... Der Tamarindenbaum...

Photo: Pam Thomas, source

Ein weiterer Bohnenbaum, der ein Fledermaus-bzw.Flughundbaum ist. . .

Another bean tree that is a bat tree . . . the tamarind tree shares a botanical family and a bat association with the blackbean tree, the petai tree, the carob tree, the West Indian locust tree and the West African locust tree. Another bat tree that has a multiplicity of uses: food, timber, medicine, fuel, and many items useful in homes and in commercial processes. Another bat tree that has so many human uses that it is regarded by the people who share its long life as a sacred tree. The tamarind tree is a native of Africa but is widespread in tropical countries. The seeds are known to be planted by flying foxes in Australia and by the Rodrigues flying fox in West Indian Ocean islands.

Tamarindus indica is a long lived and beautiful fruiting tree, growing up to 30 metres tall with a dense, spreading crown. The tree has fragrant flowers and a feathery foliage that is usually evergreen but becomes deciduous in drier regions. The bole is usually short, 1 - 2 metres in diameter.  The tree is widely cultivated in the tropics and subtropics as an ornamental plant, for its edible seedpods and also for its many medicinal uses.Tamarindus indica is a large tree with a wide geographical distribution. Although the origin of this species is not fully resolved, it is thought to originate in tropical Africa, but has been an ancient introduction to many countries. The population is large, and there are no known threats. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013).

The pulp of the pods is so tasty that the seeds are dispersed and planted by a variety of appreciative creatures besides the flying foxes.

Another comprehensive article on the Tamarind tree and its virtues I found here with many more details, I liked especially the part about superstitions....

Few plants will survive beneath a tamarind tree and there is a superstition that it is harmful to sleep or to tie a horse beneath one, probably because of the corrosive effect that fallen leaves have on fabrics in damp weather. Some African tribes venerate the tamarind tree as sacred. To certain Burmese, the tree represents the dwelling-place of the rain god and some hold the belief that the tree raises the temperature in its immediate vicinity. In Nyasaland, tamarind bark soaked with corn is given to domestic fowl in the belief that, if they stray or are stolen, it will cause them to return home. In Malaya, a little tamarind and coconut milk is placed in the mouth of an infant at birth, and the bark and fruit are given to elephants to make them wise.

By the way, in Rodrigues the flowering season of the tamarand tree is in September and ends by middle of October, as I have no tamarind tree in my immediate surrounding I almost always miss the flowering, that's why I don't have photos myself ...

Zeit für Campèche...A plant loved by bees...Haematoxylum campechianum

20.08.2020

Last year in August

It is August and time again for the bloodwood - or bluewood tree - to bloom, which was introduced here in the 1980s especially for beekeepers in Rodrigues, as its flowers attract bees because of their nectar content. At Care-Co in Camp du Roi we have a tree and it is always a pleasure when it starts flowering, because in the months before, which are the winter months here, bees are very withdrawn as hardly anything is in bloom. For us it means to be able to reduce the additional winter feeding a little until it is the turn of the eucalyptus to flower. After a very bad season with no eucalyptus blooms, a very rare phenomenon and probably a consequence of last year's cyclones, we are now hoping for better times for our bees and are taking the bloodwood tree bloom as a positive messenger. Unfortunately there are not any more many Campèche trees left, as we call them here, Haematoxylum campechianum is considered invasive and in recent years more and more of these trees have been removed in Rodrigues instead of keeping them in a controlled manner.
