Nachtrag....Milchstraße, Venus & Jupiter in Réunion

Es ist schon eine ganze Weile her, dass ich Fotos von Luc Perrot hier veröffentlicht habe. Zum Zeitpunkt der Venus-Jupiter Konjunktion war ich so sehr mit unserem Himmel hier in Rodrigues beschäftigt, dass mir gar nicht in den Sinn kam, auf seinen Internetseiten nachzuschauen, wie sich ihm denn der Himmel in Réunion gezeigt hat. Dies sei nun nachgeholt. Zu Beginn mit einem atemberaubenden Foto der Milchstraße....-

It has been quite a while that I published photos of Luc Perrot here. During the Venus-Jupiter conjunction I was taken so much looking up to our sky in Rodrigues, that I did not even get the idea to check his Internet sites for his view of the phenomenon in Reunion. As you can see, I am about to catch up.As starters above a breath taking image of the Milky Way...-

Ca fait déjà un moment d'avoir montré quelques photos de Luc Perrot ici. Pendant la conjonction de Vénus et Jupiter j'étais si occupé avec le ciel de Rodrigues que j'ai raté complètement de voir comment ce phénomenon se présentait chez lui à la Réunion. Donc, ici avec un peu de rétard, ses images, magnifiques comme toujours. Pour commencer, au-dessus la Voie Lactée...magique..

Himmlische Begegnung... Venus meets Jupiter....Rendez-vous cosmique....


First the moon...:))

"Astronomical conjunctions occur when celestial objects appear close to one another in the night sky—this happens all the time and they’re not particularly unusual. But a conjunction happening tonight is notable in that it involves two very bright planets—Venus and Jupiter—and they’ll be closer together than they’ve been since Terminator 2 was in theaters.
Over the last month, the two planets have been drawing closer and closer together in the sky, with tonight’s separation between them measuring only a third of a degree. As the sun goes down—you don’t even have to wait until dark since the planets are so bright—look to the west, where you’ll see the brighter Venus alongside the dimmer Jupiter. They’ll be so close together you’ll be able to hide both planets behind your pinky finger." (source)
 
 Tonight is a special night...Venus and Jupiter are meeting at their closest and I do not want to miss it. So before taking Miss Molly out for a walk, I went out myself hoping to catch at least not only a glimpse but also some pics of their celestial date. It has been a beautiful evening, very calm, not too many clouds and the moon lit the sky beautifully. As I am not used to take night sky pics, the quality is not particularly good. However, I want to show some of the photos as I think maybe a few of you might be interested in how Venus and Jupiter were looking like in Rodrigues...









"At the beginning of June, the two planets were 20 degrees apart in the sky, about twice the width of your fist held at arm's length. Week by week, Jupiter and the stars behind it have gradually slipped lower in the evening twilight. But Venus, due to its rapid orbital motion around the sun, has stayed high up. The resulting slow-motion convergence put them 6 degrees apart last week, setting the stage for Tuesday's awesome display.
Although the two planets appear very near one another in the sky, they're actually not. Venus is 58 million miles from Earth, and Jupiter is 12 times farther out at 565 million miles. The distance explains why the two planets will look roughly the same size even though Jupiter is far larger.
Sky & Telescope Contributing Editor Fred Schaaf points out that this current string of Venus-Jupiter conjunctions closely resembles a similar series between the years 3 and 2 B.C. It has been suggested that their joint appearance came to be known as the Star of Bethlehem." (source)

Man muss nicht auf La Réunion sein um die planetarischen Konjunktionen dieser Woche zu sehen. Es reicht von fast überall auf der Welt einfach nach Sonnenuntergang in den Westen zu schauen. Das hellste Objekt am westlichen Himmel ist die Venus und wird fast immer als erstes bemerkt. Über der Venus ist Jupiter das zweithellste Objekt. Schwierig wird es bei Merkur, der nur kurz nach Sonnenuntergang als schwacher Punkt knapp oberhalb des Horizonts sichtbar ist. Letzte Woche aufgenommen befanden sich Venus und Jupiter auch in Gesellschaft einer hellen Mondsichel, die sich nun fortbewegt hat.

You don't have to be on Reunion Island to see this week's planetary conjunction. Only if you want to see this picturesque seascape as well. To see the conjunction from just about anywhere in the world, look to the west after sunset. The first planet you may notice is Venus, the brightest object in the western sky. Above Venus, the second brightest object is Jupiter. The hardest planet to spot is Mercury, which is visible only briefly after sunset as a faint dot just above the horizon.Picturesque rocks leading out from Reunion Island to the Indian Ocean populate the foreground of the above picture. Taken last week, the distant planets Venus and Jupiter were joined by a bright crescent Moon, which has now moved away.(source)

Und nun zu dem Sonnensturm, 
der diese Woche in den Schlagzeilen war -
And now to the solar storm which has been in the news this week

Die ersten Ausläufer eines der stärksten Sonnenstürme der vergangenen Jahre sind auf die Erde getroffen. Die Auswirkungen der Sonneneruption seien deutlich stärker als bei jenem Sturm, der die Erde Ende Januar erreicht habe.Noch den ganzen Tag über soll der Sturm andauern. Am Himmel über Nordeuropa und Zentralasien könnten am Abend Polarlichter zu sehen sein.

Die Eruption in der vergangenen Nacht soll laut Max-Planck-Institut in der linken Sonnenhälfte aufgetreten sein. Der Hauptsturm fliege deshalb wohl links an der Erde vorbei und wird die Erde somit vermutlich nicht voll treffen. Der Sturm im Januar, der stärkste seit gut fünf Jahren, habe die Erde rechts passiert. Am kommenden Wochenende könne es nochmals zu gewaltigen Sonnenstürmen kommen.

Sicherheitshalber haben erste Fluggesellschaften Flugrouten über die Erdpole umgeleitet,US-Experten rechnen damit, dass der Sturm zudem Stromausfälle verursachen und Satellitennavigationssysteme sowie Handynetze beeinträchtigen könnte. Bislang seien aber keine Schäden an Satelliten bekannt.Vorsichtshalber seien aber sensible Geräte abgeschaltet worden.

Für Mitte 2013 erwarten Fachleute ein Maximum der Sonnenaktivität. Dabei werden große Gaswolken aus den Außenschichten der Sonne ins All geschleudert.
1973 hatte ein Sonnensturm zu einem Stromausfall in der kanadischen Provinz Québec geführt. Sechs Millionen Menschen saßen damals im Dunkeln.

"The largest solar storm in five years sent a huge wave of radiation into earth's atmosphere creating a brilliant show of the aurora borealis near Yellowknife, North West Territories on Thursday March 8, 2012. Yellowknife, which is situated directly under the auroral "oval", has some of the best northern lights viewing in the world. Truckers returning from the diamond mines 330 kilometers northeast enjoy the nighttime spectacle as they cruised down the ice road on Prosperous Lake."

The strongest space weather storm in five years struck Earth on March 8, 2012 causing some airlines to reroute their flights, threatening power disruptions and sparking a show of the northern lights. NASA and other agencies warned that the storm had the potential to disrupt global positioning systems, satellites and power grids, and had already caused some air carriers to change their planes' polar flight paths. However, the Earth's magnetic field appeared to be absorbing the brunt of the shock and it was unlikely to reach the most severe levels, US experts said."

A solar storm shook the Earth's magnetic field early Friday, but scientists said they had no reports of any problems with electrical systems. After reports Thursday of the storm fizzling out, a surge of activity prompted space weather forecasters to issue alerts about changes in the magnetic field."
