Oktober....oder "Schweine....finden wir gut"

Gestern ist mir dieses Bild in die Hände gefallen, auch wenn wir in Rodrigues jetzt keinen Herbst haben, fand ich Piglet einfach so nett als Oktoberbegrüßungsdelegation, das ich nicht widerstehen konnte...-

Wer sich fragt, wie denn das Wetter in Rodrigues normalerweise im Oktober ist: an sich gut, blauer Himmel, Sonnenschein, man spürt den Sommer kommen, aber es ist noch nicht zu heiß, etwas windig, doch was soll ich sagen, im Moment regnet es hier eher wie "Sau" und das schon den zweiten Tag...-

Who wonders how the weather in Rodrigues is usually in October: mostly good, blue skies, sunshine, you can feel the summer coming, but it's not yet too hot, windy maybe, but what can I say, at the moment it is raining, "Sauwetter" (pig weather as we say in German) and that already for the second day ...-

Qui se demande comment parce que e temps fait à Rodrigues généralement en Octobre: plutôt beau, ciel bleu, soleil, on peut sentir l'été s'approcher, mais il n'est pas encore trop chaud, mais ce que je peux dire, au moment il pleut, un vrai temps de cochon (comment on dit en allemand) et cela déjà le deuxième jour ...-

Astrid und ihr Mann Seabastian, von denen die Schweinebilder stammen haben sich gestern mit ihrem Boot S/Y Levada Aziz auf den Weg nach Mauritius gemacht, rudern werden sie nicht müssen, aber weniger Regen wäre schön....-

Tropicbirds....Paille-en-Queue à Anse Quitor

Heute mal auf die Schnelle ein paar Fotos von ein paar Tropikvögeln, die Sophie und ich bei unserem Besuch vor 4 Wochen in Anse Quitor gemacht haben.-

Today some pics of Tropicbirds which were taken by Sophie and me about 4 weeks ago during our visit of the Reserve Francois Leguat at Anse Quitor.-

Wie man unschwer sieht, sind es keine professionellen Fotos, aber wir waren schon glücklich, wenn auf ein paar wenigen Aufnahmen (von Dutzenden) die Vögel als solche schon identifizierbar waren....:))-

As one can see easily, these are not professional shots, but we were already happy when on some photos (out of dozens taken) at least some were recognisable as Tropicbirds...:))-

Comme on peut constater sans difficulté, les photos ne sont pas d'une qualité professionelle, mais nous étions déjà contents quand sur quelques unes (des douzaines prises) les oiseaux étaient au moins identifiables...:))

Wir hatten wirklich Glück und konnten an diesem Morgen einige bei ihren Paarungsflügen beobachten. -

We were really lucky this moning as we could observe quite a lot of birds during their aerial displays which happen only during breeding season.-

Nous étions vraiment privilegiés ce matin car nous avons pu observer pas mal des oiseaux pendant leurs vol en couple, un phénomène qui peut se voir que dans cette période.

Normalerweise lebt der Tropikvogel allein.-
Usually the Tropicbirds lives solitary.-
Normallement le Paille-en-Queue mène une vie en solitude.

Und hier der Blick auf das Tal von "Francois Leguat", von wo aus wir die Vögel beobachtet und fotografiert haben.-And this is a view on the valley of the Reserve Francois Leguat from where we took the pics...-

You can find a longer and more detailed article about Tropicbirds and their behaviour here in German and English. However, here some fast facts.

- The White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus) can be recognised by the long white tail feathers

and its yellow bill.

- It lives solitary in habit.

- Pairs exhibit aerial displays during breeding season.

- First breeding attempts at 2–5 years of age.

- Average adult weight 350g.

- Average lifespan: appr.16-20 years

In comparison:

- The red-tailed tropic bird (Phaethon rubricauda) has a longer tail

- Red-tailed Tropicbird can easily be distinguished by its long red tail feathers and red

bill

- It lives solitary in habit.

- Pairs exhibit aerial displays during breeding season.

- Average adult weight 800g

- Average lifespan is16 years

Both species breed on the main land and possibly on the islets of Rodrigues.

Letzte Woche waren es nur drei, und in den ersten Monaten der Saison lagen bereits bis zu 16 Yachten in Port Mathurin. Es gibt eine ganze Reihe von Fotos und Geschichten, bislang hatte ich keine Zeit, das hier einzustellen. Aber wird noch!-

Last week there had been only three boats here, during the first months of the season it had been eve up to 16 yachts at the same time. There are a couple of more pics and stories, I had no time yet to post them, bit I am working on it.-

Dernière semaine il y avait que 3 bateau ici, pendant les premiers mois avant il y avait parfois même jusqu'à 16 à la fois. Il y en a plus de photos et aussi quelques petites histoires, je n'avais pas le temps de les publier, mais bientôt, c'est promis!

Ja, genau. Das ist sie. Sophie. Vor 3 Tagen am Mittwoch, an ihrem letzten Tag in Rodrigues vor ihrem Rückflug nach Belgien.

Warum sie gekommen ist, was sie erlebt und gesehen hat, darum soll es (u.a.) demnächst hier gehen.Soweit nur soviel, es waren interessante 39 Tage mit ihr, und ja, ein etwas anderer Urlaub war es auch...))

Yes exactly. That's her. Sophie. 3 days ago on Wednesday, on her last day in Rodrigues before returning to Belgium.

Why she came here, what she has seen and experienced, that's what this blog will be about soon (among other things).So far only that much, it were interesting 39 days with her, and yes, a somewhat different holiday it was too ...)) -

Oui, exactement. C'est elle. Sophie. Il ya 3 jours, le mercredi, son dernier jour à Rodrigues avant rentrer à Belgique.

Pourquoi elle est venue, ce qu'elle a vu et vécu, cela on peut suivre bientôt ici (entre autres choses).Juste autant, c'étaient 39 jours intéressants avec elle, et oui, c'étaient aussi des vacances pas comme des autres...))

P.S. Die Fotos mit Sternchen* sind von Sophie, der Kuchen (mit Passionsfrucht-Creme) war wirklich lecker und ja, sie ist gut zu Hause angekommen...-

"Auf uns"...Eine Familie mehr.- One more family.- Une famille en plus....

Und das haut mich fast um, der Vater ist auch nicht weit..., er bestätigt mir übrigens, dass ich gerade richtig gezählt habe.-

And that almost blows me, the father is not far too, ...by the way just confirming that I counted correctly.-

Et ce que me surprend beaucoup, le père n'est pas trop loin non plus,...d'ailleur il me confirme d'avoir compté correctement.

Das beruhigt mich und ich kann endlich den Nachwuchs in näheren Augenschein nehmen.Zu lieblich diese Kleinen, die am Freitag noch nicht zu sehen waren...-

Und was sind die Trends in der mauritischen Gesellschaft?
Nach den neuesten Zahlen von Statistik Mauritius für die Zeit von Januar bis Juni 2015 erlebt die Geburtenrate in Mauritius einen deutlichen Rückgang. Das gleiche gilt für Eheschließungen.
Tatsächlich sinkt die Zahl der Eheschließungen stetig. Von Januar bis Juni wurden 4320 registriert, im Vergleich zu 4709 im vergangenen Jahr. Bei Geburten im gleichen Zeitraum im Jahr 2014 waren es noch 6955 bei 6736 in diesem Jahr. Dies trotz steigender Zahlen der Bevölkerung auf Mauritius. Am 1. Juli 2015 wird die Bevölkerung in Mauritius mit 1.220.663 beziffert und für Rodrigues mit 41 942. Dies entspricht einer Steigerung von 1.671 Personen.

And what are the trends in the Mauritian society?
According to the latest figures released by Statistics Mauritius for the period from January to June 2015, the birth rate in Mauritius is experiencing a considerable decline. The same applies to marriages that are less and less frequent.
Indeed, the number of marriages is falling. From January to June 4,320 were registered, compared to 4,709 last year. As for births, for the same period in 2014, the figure stood at 6955 against 6736 this year. This, even though the figures show an increase of the population in Mauritius. On 1 July 2015, the population in Mauritius was at 1,220,663 and in Rodrigues at 41 942. This represents an increase of 1671 people.

Et quelles sont les tendances au sein de la société mauricienne ?

Frauenschuh...Venus slipper...Sabot de Vénus

Letztes Wochenende habe ich mir eine neue Pflanze gekauft, meine erste Orchidee. Nun kenne ich auch endlich ihren Namen. Sie heißt Paphiopedilum, im Deutschen auch Frauenschuh oder Venusschuh genannt. Der Name leitet sich von Paphia, einem auf Zypern gebräuchlichen Beinamen für die Göttin Aphrodite, welche in der Nähe der Stadt Paphos an Land gegangen sein soll, und pedilon, im Griechischen für Pantoffel oder Sandale, ab.Es gibt ca. 100 Arten und Unterarten. Sie ist heimisch im tropischen Asien. In Rodrigues kennt man sie noch nicht sehr lange.

Der Venusschuh nutzt seine Lippen in der Form eines Schuhs als Falle für bestäubende Insekten, die, wenn sie einmal hereingekommen sind, nur einen einzigen Ausgang finden, dicht vorbeigezwängt am Staubbeutel, wo während des Anklammerns während des Aufstiegs hinaus ins Freie auf dem Rücken Pollen abgestreift wird, mit dem eine weitere Pflanze der gleichen Art befruchtet wird.-

Last weekend I bought a new plant, my first orchid. Now I know finally its name. The plant is called Paphiopedilum, also known as Venus slipper. The name derives from Paphia, a common nickname in Cyprus for the goddess Aphrodite, who should have gone near the town of Paphos on land, and pedilon, in Greek for slipper or sandal. There are about 100 species and subspecies and is native to tropical Asia. In Rodrigues only few people know this plant.
Interesting detail: the Venus slipper uses its lip in the shape of a shoe as a trap for pollinating insects that, once entered, can only get out by one exit clinging pollen onto their backs that fertilize another plant of the same kind.-

Le week-end dernier j'ai acheté une nouvelle plante, ma première orchidée. Maintenant, je connais enfin son nom. Elle est appelé Paphiopedilum, plutôt connue comme Sabot de Vénus. Son nom dérive de Paphia, un nom commun à Chypre pour la déesse Aphrodite, qui aurait dû aller à terre près de la ville de Paphos,et pedilon, en grec pour pantoufle ou sandale. Il ya environ 100 espèces et sous-espèces. Elle est originaire d'Asie tropicale. A Rodrigues nous ne la connaissons pas encore depuis longtemps.

Détail intéressant:"Le sabot de vénus utilise son labelle à la forme de sabot comme piège pour les insectes pollinisateurs qui en entrant ne pourront sortir que par des issues ou viendront s'accrocher à leur dos le pollen qui féconde une autre plante du même genre."

Es ist wieder Mariä Himmelfahrt und auch wenn es dieses Jahr kein Feiertag ist, die Rodriguer werden diesen Tag traditionsgemäß mit Marienkuchen und Open Air Messe an der Marienstatue begehen...-

It is again Assumption's Day and even if it is not a public holiday this year, the Rodriguans will mark this day traditionally with Marie cake and Open Air Mass at the statue of Virgin Mary...-

On fête à nouveau l'Assomption et même s'il n'y a pas de congé publique cette année, les Rodriguais vont marquer cette journée traditionnellement avec un gâteau de la Vierge et une messe en pleine air à la statue de la Vierge...
