Dezemberstimmung....Flamboyant in Mauritius

Auch wenn diese Aufnahme nicht auf Rodrigues entstanden ist, aber dem roten Bus passend zum flammend-rotblühenden Flamboyant auf Mauritius in meinem neuen 2011 Kalender konnte ich nicht widerstehen. Der Flamboyant ist in unserer Region das untrügliche Kennzeichen für den Übergang ins neue Jahr...-

Although this photo was not taken in Rodrigues, I couldn't resist the red bus, so perfectly matching the red-flowering Flamboyant on Mauritius, depicted in my new 2011 agenda...The Flamboyant in our region marks undoubtedly the transition into the new year....

Regenbogengrüße....Rainbow greetings...Des salutations en arc-en-ciel de la Bretagne...

Ein kleiner roter Katamaran, er gehört Danilo...und zwei Regenbogenbilder kamen am 11. Dezember aus der Bretagne per Mail von Hervé Laboutin, der damit seine Ankunft für den 21. Dezember ankündigt. Die Fotos entstanden bereits im Januar 2010 am Hafen von Port Mathurin, da wo wir uns auch kennengelernt haben. Mit seiner Frau Michèle kommt er nun bereits zum 4. Mal nach Rodrigues. Wir wünschen einen schönen Aufenthalt!-

Un petit catamaran rouge qui d'ailleurs appartient à Danilo...et deux photos d'arc-en-ciel sont arrivées le 11 décembre de la Bretagne d' Hervé Laboutin qui nous annonce sur ce chemin son arivée pour le 21 décembre. Les photos datent déjà du janvier 2010, prises au quai de Port Mathurin, là où nous avons fait notre connaissance. Avec son épouse Michèle il mettra pour la 4ième fois ses pieds sur notre petite île. Biensûr, nous souhaitons un séjour très agréable!-

A little red catamaran and two rainbow photos....that is the way someone from Brittany announces his coming arrival. The pics were taken already in January 2010 at the quay of Port Mathurin where he have also met for the first time. With his wife Michèle he will visit our island already for the 4th time...sure, we wish them a wonderful stay!

Mauritius - Erstmals Frau als Vizepräsidentin des Landes

Monique Ohsan-Bellepeau

Mauritius hat seit dem 12.November zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte eine Vize-Präsidentin. Nach dem Tod ihres Vorgängers Angidi Chettiar wurde sie von Prime Minister Ramgolam für dieses Amt vorgeschlagen und ohne Gegenstimme in der National Assembly gewählt. Sie ist Journalistin von Beruf, war Präsidentin der Mauritian Labor Party. Ihr Großvater war einst Parteimitbegründer. In einem Interview mit der Presse sagt sie, dass sie hofft, dass ihre Wahl auch impulsgebend für andere Frauen in Mauritius sei, die Führungspositionen in der Politik anstreben.

ember 2010 following the death of former Vice President, Angidi Chettiar. She was elected unanimously by all members of the National Assembly to serve also as First woman as Vice President of the Country. She was a member of the Mauritian Labor Party and later became the President of the Party . She is the grand daughter of Bartholomée Ohsan who was a founding member of the party. She is a journalist by profession and also was a News Annnouncer on the National TV Channel, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.

She was married to Yves Joseph Bellepeau who was a businessman and who died 3 days after she was sworn in as Vice President .He died on the 16h of November 2010.

She took oath at State House (0fficial Residence of the President), Réduit on Saturday morning. On the same day, she was called on to be the Acting President soon after the President, Sir Anerood Jugnauth , left for India in the evening.

In 2009 she was decorated by President Jugnauth as Grand Officer of the Star and Key of Indian Ocean . She therefore uses the suffix (GOSK).

Lepidopus Caudatus....Lang, platt und eine Premiere für Rodrigues

Sie sind lang, ziemlich platt, gehören zu den Haarschwänzen und wurden bis dato nicht hier gefangen, jedenfalls nicht vor letzten Sonntag als Fischer von Rodrigues sich überrascht fragten, was ihnen denn da an den Haken gegangen ist...Von Shoals kam dann die Aufklärung, dass es sich bei diesem 2m50 langen Fisch um Lepidopus caudatus handelt, besser bekannt in Australien, Neuseeland, dem Mittelmeer und den Azoren, wo er auch als guter Speisefisch gilt....

An interesting catch was made last Sunday in Rodriguan seas by local fishermen who had to request information about this fish first from marine experts as never before such a species had been caught before...it' s called Lepidopus caudatus...also known as Silver scabbardfish or frostfish (see below)

"Dimanche dernier, les pêcheurs de Pointe Monier nous ont contactés- Un bateau de pêche a ramené un poisson inconnu dans ses prises. Aucun n'avaient encore vu pareil poisson dont le corps resssemblait à une aiguillemais était plat. De gros yeux globuleux laissaient penser qu'il s'agissait d'une espèce habituée aux grands fonds. des hommes de la mer ont été appelés à la rescousse pour savoir si quelqu'un connaissait cette espèce. Mais en vain. Aussi, le lendemain, nous avons pris contact avec Shoals au sulet de celui-ci. Là, nous avons pu avoir des informations. "Il s'agit d'un poissonqui est habitué à vivre entre 60 et jusqu'à 600 m de fond, ne remontant que très peu à la surface, surtout lors de la pleine lune où encore tôt le matin. On peut peut-être consierer qu'il s'agit dùnepremière prise ici à Rodrigues" a déclaré Eric de Shoals. Il s'agit d'un Lepidopus Caudatus, ou du moins appartenant à la famille des Trichiurdae. Il est plus communément appelé Sabre Argenté en raison de don corps plat et de son apparence de couleur métallique. Ce poisson vit habituellement dans les profondeurs en Méditerranée, Atlantique Est, au sud des océans pacifique et Indien (entre l'Afrique du Sud et l'Australie). Le 'sabre argenté' est un actif pr´dateur qui se nourrit de poissons, de mollusques (notamment de calmars), ainsi que de crustacés. Il a une chair très appréciée et fait l'objet dùne pêche semi-industrielle en Espagne, au Portugal, au Maroc et en Italie." (source: La Tribune 01.10.2010)

Hier ein ausgesprochen interessanter Artikel über den 'Frostfish' aus Neuseeland, wo er offenbar neben seinen Qualitäten als exzellenter Speisefisch auch bekannt geworden ist durch seine suizidale Eigenschaft, in frostigen Nächten zu stranden, woher auch sein Name herrührt, wenngleich diese Eigenschaft auch schon an sonnigen Tagen beobachtet worden sein soll...

"At first glance the frostfish appears to be a thin looking barracouta. Indeed the two species share several common features: both are devoid of scales, have a mouth full of long sharp teeth, and are silver in colour.Both the barracouta and the frostfish are mid water hunters preying on squid and small baitfish. They are however unrelated.

The frostfish is generally a deepwater species. The skin, like that of the barracouta, is easily damaged if a captured specimen is roughly handled. The skin rubs off easily. When first caught the flanks shine like polished chrome with an iridescent cobalt blue shimmer along the upper body.

The frostflsh is much thinner than the barracouta having a more laterally compressed body. It is also longer with an average specimen measuring up to 1.5 metres. The body tapers toward the small tail to give an eel like profile. The dorsal fin runs the full length of the fish. I have seen several specimens both caught off Banks Peninsula by accident. The frostfish appears quite flimsy being thin in profile for its height and yet surprisingly long, whereas the similar looking barracouta is a much more robust fish by comparison.

Frostfish are occasionally caught by Canterbury anglers fishing the deepsea Pegasus Canyon . This species has long been known to strand itself on gently sloping sandy beaches on calm frosty nights; hence it's name. The late David H. Graham in his excellent book A Treasury of New Zealand Fishes talks of an incident when out in a rowing boat on Ohiwa Harbour, Bay of Plenty, when a frostfish was seen to swim ashore. They secured the stranded fish from the beach, rowed back out into mid channel 100 yards distant and released it. The suicidal fish promptly beached itself again. This happened twice. Eventually they kept and eat the fish. Frostfish are also known to carry out this odd behaviour on sunny days!

They are also known to be occasionally washed ashore on New Brighton Beach, Christchurch , during cold winter nights. Such specimens can be taken home and eaten by early morning beach walkers going for a stroll provided they are not beaten to the free meal by seagulls!

This species is found all around New Zealand but usually out in deepwater between 200m and 500m. Although anglers occasionally catch them when fishing baited hooks in deepwater it is rare to catch one and they are not targeted at all.

The frostfish is excellent eating having a fine white delicate flesh. Cook by either filleting, or cutting into sections which can then be cooked in butter like flounder." (source)

James Agathe (26) ist Rodrigues erster Weltmeister. Er errang am letzten Wochenende in Ungarn beim Szeged Kick-Boxing World Cup 2010 den Titel in seiner Gewichtsklasse für Mauritius. -

James Agathe (26) is the first World Champion coming from Rodrigues. He got the title last week-end in Hungary where the Kick-Boxing World Cup 2010 was held.

Tag des Buches 2010...Die längste Büchergirlande der Welt

Gleich nach dem Earth Day gab es am 23.4. den Internationalen Tag des Buches. Diesmal keine Bilder aus Rodrigues davon, aber aus Mainz. -

Immediately after Earth Day, the International Book Day was celebrated on 23 April. This time no pics from Rodrigues, instead some photos from Mainz in Germany. Meherere tausend Schüler und Schülerinnen der Region haben im Vorfeld hart gearbeitet um die wohl längste Buchcover-Girlande der Welt zu kreieren.-

Several thousand students from all schools in the region have worked hard to create probably the world's longest garland of book covers ever... Die Girlande hatte eine Länge von 39 km und umfasste über 170 000 selbstgemalte Buchcover, ich finde das war eine ganz wunderbare Aktion, einfach nur beeindruckend...-

Of 39 km length, comprising more than 170,000 bookcovers, all painted by the students themselves...Impressive, isn't it?!!!

Alice Miller....Die Stimme der Verletzten Kinder

"Die Kindheitsforscherin und Schriftstellerin Alice Miller ist im Alter von 87 Jahren gestorben. Das teilte der Suhrkamp-Verlag in Berlin mit. Miller starb demnach bereits am 14. April in ihrer Heimat in der französischen Provence. Die Beisetzung habe auf Wunsch der Autorin im engsten Familienkreis stattgefunden.

Zu den bekanntesten Werken der 1923 in Polen geborenen Miller gehört das 1979 erschienene Buch "Das Drama des begabten Kindes und die Suche nach dem wahren Selbst". Darin beschreibt sie unter anderem die psychologischen Folgen, die Gewalt und Misshandlung in der Kindheit haben kann. Eine ihrer provokantesten Thesen lautete: "In jedem noch so schrecklichen Diktator, Massenmörder, Terroristen steckt ausnahmslos ein einst schwer gedemütigtes Kind, das nur dank der absoluten Verleugnung seiner Gefühle der totalen Ohnmacht überlebt hat." Als Fallbeispiele für diese Thesen analysierte sie unter anderem auch die Kindheit Adolf Hitlers.

Damit grenzte sich Miller deutlich von der Psychoanalyse ab, die sie als "System zur Unterdrückung der Wahrheit" kritisierte, da diese aus ihrer Sicht in alter Tradition das Kind beschuldigt und die Eltern schont. Zuletzt erschien von ihr "Dein gerettetes Leben", das 2008 veröffentlicht wurde und in dem sie für eine liebevolle und gewaltfreie Kindeserziehung plädierte."

Gerade erst fand ich die Meldung, dass Alice Miller diesen Monat gestorben ist. Auch wenn dieser Monat voll war von vielen dramatischen Ereignissen, so möchte ich dennoch dieser bemerkenswerten Dame an dieser Stelle einen kleinen Beitrag widmen, für sie, die sich bis kurz vor ihrem Tod mit großem Engagement in ihrer Domäne der Psychotherapie für misshandelte Kinder, bzw. das verletzte Kind in uns, eingesetzt und eine gewaltfreie Erziehung gefordert hat.

Alice Millers Arbeit hat mich nicht nur während meines Studiums begleitet, ihre Erkenntnisse waren bahnbrechend für alle, die sich näher mit der Dynamik von Gewalt beschäftigt haben, und wichtiger noch, sie verhalfen endlich all denen zu einer Stimme, deren ganz persönliche Gewalterfahrungen nicht gehört, bagatellisiert oder verdreht wurden. Sich mit dem verletzten Kind in uns zu konfrontieren, es innerhalb der eigenen Biografie anzunehmen, ist eine unabdingbare Voraussetzung auf dem Weg der Heilung und der Möglichkeit, als Erwachsene/r selbst nicht zu verletzen...Ich möchte Alice Miller für ihre unschätzbare Arbeit danken, die -leider- bis heute nichts an Aktualität verloren hat...RIP!

 

Only recently I found the message that Alice Miller has passed away this month. Although this month has been full of many dramatic events, I would nevertheless like to dedicate this remarkable lady a small contribution. Alice Miller was committed to one cause, which can't be estimated high enough, as psychotherapist and in her books she fought for abused children, the wounded child in grown-ups and she called for a non-violent upbringing.
Alice Miller's work has been with me not only during my studies, her findings were groundbreaking for all who have been closely engaged with the dynamics of violence, and more importantly, she gave all those a voice whose very personal experience of violence was not heard, was played down or had been twisted. To accept the confrontation with the wounded child in us as part of one's biography, is a prerequisite on the path of healing and for the possibility to end the circle of abuse as an adult.... I would like to thank Alice Miller for her invaluable work which -unfortunately- hasn't lost anything of its significance until today ... RIP!

Heute auf France 3: Rodrigues bei Thalassa....Ce soir sur Planète Thalassa/France 3: Le Parc Marin à Rodrigues...

Gerade bekam ich einen Anruf vom Marinepark, einem gänzlich neuen Projekt, das im Süden der Insel versucht, die seit vielen Jahren ausgebeutete Lagune durch unterschiedliche Maßnahmen zu retten...Ein Projekt, das lange geplant war, das sich aber erst jetzt langsam realisiert. Letzten Monat war ein 2 köpfiges Team von Thalassa hier auf der Insel um über den gegenwärtigen Stand des Projekts und seinen Zielen zu berichten.Wer France 3 sehen kann, sollte unbedingt heute um 20.30 einschalten, morgen um 19.40 wird die Sendung auch auf Tempo ausgestrahlt, mehrere Wiederholungen gibt es ebenfalls....
Ich weiß nicht, wie bekannt Thalassa im deutsch- und englischsprachigen Raum ist, selbst wenn man des Französischen nicht ganz mächtig ist, lohnt es sich ihre Beiträge anzuschauen.

In Bezug auf den Zustand dieser Erde ist Thalassa eine der gewichtigsten Stimmen im Fernsehen, seit vielen Jahren wird sich in langen dokumentierenden Beiträgen mit dem Zustand marinen Lebens auf der ganzen Welt befasst. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass ein Thalassa-Team hier auf Rodrigues begrüßt werden konnte.

Entre 1968 et 1973, les habitants de l’archipel des Chagos seront secrètement déportés par les Etats-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne, qui transforment l’île principale de l’archipel, en une base militaire. Devant les Nations Unies, le gouvernement britannique prétendra que les îles sont désertes. En 2000, la Haute Cour de Londres leur donnera raison mais un jugement final leur interdit tout retour définitif. A Rodrigues, dépendance de l’ile Maurice, la mer est l'unique ressource. Mais l'homme a trop longtemps profité de ce jardin d'Eden. Un des plus beaux exemples de biodiversité de l'océan indien est entrain de disparaître. Face à ce constat, les pêcheurs de l’île ont décidé de réagir. Un projet de parc marin, dirigé par les Nations Unies, vient de voir le jour. A Rodrigues, on compte 2000 pêcheurs officiels, il y en a en fait plus de 8000. Des fraudeurs qui détruisent le lagon.

En août 1744, un bateau de la Compagnie Française des Indes se prend au piège des récifs et coule. Parmi les victimes, une certaine Virginie. A l'île Maurice, le Saint Géran est un mythe. Mais Virginie a-t-elle vraiment existé ?

Sorry, no English translation so far, it is about a program broadcasted tonight on France 3 concerning our new Marine Park Project with the objective to save our lagoon which has been over-exploited far too long, there are other documentaries today featuring Mauritius and Chagos too. Thalassa is one of the most popular and most interesting programs about marine life everywhere on the world, and that already for nearly 35 years!!!! Programs can be seen too on TV5 which I strongly recommend to everyone who is interested in saving our marine world!

Eine bessere Welt

Jeden Tag stirbt unser Planet ein wenig mehr, durch Egoismus und durch die Unüberlegtheit des Menschen.Wir, die wir die Chance haben, einen Planeten zu haben, der uns das Leben und uns Schutz gibt, haben weder Achtung noch Respekt, wir zerstören ihn ohne Mitleid und ohne Gnade. Zu stolz sind wir auf unsere kleinen Persönlichkeiten, zu stolz um uns die Konsequenzen unserer Taten anzusehen. Wir lassen uns vom Teufel manipulieren, wir unterwerfen uns seinen schlechten Einflüssen, und lassen diese Terrain gewinnen. Ein paar Minuten Genuss, und schon ein Leben vollkommen zerstört. Mit unseren schlechten Taten, unterzeichen wir einen Vertrag zum Verlust unserer Welt...Warum tun wir das? Sind wir uns also der Folgen dessen was wir tun nicht bewusst? Was sind das für Träume, die wir haben... berühmt zu sein, reich, beliebt..., was sind das für Ziele, wenn alles erreichen zu wollen, bedeutet, dass unsere Erde verschwindet. Wird die Generation nach uns in der Lage sein, diese Welt auf der wir jetzt leben zu bestaunen...? Nein! Wohl die Konsequenzen unserer dummen Unüberlegtheit...!!?!!

Werden wir aktiv und lasst uns alle zusammen unseren wertvollen Planeten retten!!!

Vom 15. - 23. April kommt der Flugverkehr im gesamten europäischen Raum zum Erliegen. Auch der Flugverkehr nach Mauritius ist betroffen.-

From 15 to 23 April the air traffic in nearly all European countries has to be cancelled with huge impact on the tourism industry. The flights to Mauritius too are affected.

PAWS Mauritius braucht Hilfe....Financial Crisis at PAWS Mauritius

"PAWS Mauritius (Protection of Animal and Welfare Society) is in a financial crisis and will most probably be halting its activities soon. We were recently contacted by Angelique Samouilhan from PAWS who alerted us about this situation.

Angelique Samouilhan says that PAWS is in a desperate situation where they may have to stop rescuing animals in distress because of a lack of financial support and maybe they are even heading toward a complete halt of all of their activities.

For those who missed it, PAWS was voted as the best NGO in Mauritius last year on Island Crisis. Well, the best NGO today needs your support. For the fact, PAWS is the only NGO in Mauritius who offers protection of animals and welfare services such as mass sterilizing, rescuing, treating dogs and cats, and offering a refuge for animals."(see Island Crisis blog)

"Imagine our island without PAWS!!!

THAT WOULD BE A DISASTER FOR THE ANIMALS!!!

… there would be no sterilisations, no treatment for animals with wounds full of maggots, and no one to help treat animals against ticks, fleas and mange, in poor villages where there are no vets

… there would be no education campaign to help people become responsible citizens and develop compassion and solutions to the pain and fear felt by the animals in their homes

… there would be no help for animals injured by the side of the road or too small to survive on their own

… there would be no refuge for people to drop off unwanted or abandoned pets so they might have a chance at finding a loving family…

In these very hard times, where people are struggling financially, animals may now suffer more if PAWS is not there to reach out to areas all over the island, offering free or very inexpensive treatments, operations, information and advice. PAWS is in a situation where we may have to stop rescuing animals in distress because of a lack of financial support.

Below are some factual figures from PAWS. From mid-July 1999 to mid-March 2010, PAWS has:

• Sterilized 42,588 dogs and cats
• Rescued 10,495 animals in distress
• Treated 11,816 dogs and cats
• Treated and prevented mange on 46,854 dogs
• Found homes for 2,982 dogs and cats
• Euthanized humanely 11,865 dogs and cats in distress

“We depend solely on donations, and PAWS would need Rs 9 million in 2010 to continue all the services we provide. PAWS is not affiliated, connected, owned or linked in any way to any social, political or religious group.

PAWS needs your help, without PAWS dogs and other animals wouldn't have any lobby in Mauritius!

Note: The situation of dogs and cats in Rodrigues is comparable to Mauritius, unfortunately we have never had a PAWS section here, however without PAWS Mauritius there would not even be a strain of hope to create something comparable here, PAWS campaigns on TV have certainly left a few traces but it is not enough- Rodriguan dogs and cats need a lobby too, we too need free sterilization and free treatment of parasite infested animals here. Stray dogs need a home and the possibility to get adopted...One vet for pets on the island is not enough...Rodrigues needs to learn from the experience of PAWS Mauritius also in the future, so that our pets have a future too!
