Des carottes...What else...Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Paul! (This time 79)

That was this year's 79th birthday cake for Paul. -

So that he never runs out of carrots for our little friend, who now attracts even Care-Co customers and visitors.-

Here the traditional birthday cake cutting ...-
Voici la traditionnelle découpe de gâteau...

...mit den Arbeitern von Care-Co...-
...assisted by the workers of Care-Co...-

A birthday is always a day of memories...here with Nifty.-

Sadly, Tiffy had to leave Paul and us on January 16 . He was tired, refused to eat and drink, he just couldn't anymore. We will never forget his friendliness... and the way he kept us busy when females around the neighbourhood were on heat...-

Not long after that, little Chippie showed up and adopted Paul, which is how it works obviously in real life.-

Do we know already of Cocolapin...-

In turn, he also adopted someone and thus once again expanded the family of Care-Co ...-

By the way, goats like carrots too, Paul, so all the best for your coming year!-

Okay, we actually wanted to boycott the World Cup in Russia, but as is often the case, you end up watching more than you wanted to. It starts with a T-shirt left here by a German tourist, and while preparing and eating chicken soup, the German national team's debacle is already in full swing...

Yesterday, they sensationally lost their opening match 0-1 against Mexico, which we had already bet on—at least one of us had... This means they now have 0 points in Group F, placing them in last place along with South Korea. We don't want to be pessimistic, but it doesn't look promising.

However things turn out, whatever happens, we're celebrating here a birthday today, maybe listening to the England vs. Tunisia game later, and we'll definitely be eating chicken soup.

It's winter here in June, and Dirk simply can't help but be in the kitchen making soup...

By the way, I highly recommend it to certain football teams in Russia; chicken soup always helps...

So, happy birthday, Dirk, and thank you for all the soups that have helped me/us through life's many challenges, especially colds and flu...!

This year Paul had to be rather inventive to make it his show...-

As since Wednesday before Easter Care-Co has a new resident, a bunny which just came along and decided to stay.-

Everybody loves Cocolapin, how this black furred cutie was named by our workers, never too tired to make us laugh or to ask us for carrots.-

Even Paul's dogs, like Tiffy here, couldn't withstand this charm offensive with a white paw ...-

Maybe not the deepest of all friendships but peaceful co-existence to 100%.-

With all this attention, it doesn't really surprise anyone that a rabbit sat cheekily on Paul's birthday cake ... :-) -

And that Paul couldn't help but cut the cake so that the rabbit wasn't affected ...-

We owe it to Nifty that the cake was cut at all...-

Yes, eventually it was really cut!-

With the promise, of course, to have as many carrots ready as possible for the next year of life. Not really a punishment for Paul ...-

There is nothing more to add to this...
All the best to you, Paul, and lots of carrots!-

Il n'y a plus rien à ajouter à cela ...
Bonne vie, Paul, et plein de carottes!

About Stupidity...Some quotes today

Ohne viele Worte...-

Without many words....

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless.

Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for when dealing with a stupid person than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.”

Happy Birthday, Paul!

This time no bees on the cake, but an airplane, because that's one of Paul's great passions. I don't know anyone who knows so much about airplanes. He is the only one on Rodrigues who has had a subscription to a flight magazine for years. And of course, he also likes to fly ...!-

Happy Birthday, Paul, and good luck for your next travel plans!

Bei "Mingkoo" in Port Mathurin - Today it's Karin's turn to write...C'est Karin qui écrit aujourd'hui

This is Karin from Hamburg. All Rodriguans on the island should know her by now, as she has been coming here for at least 22 years. At least, I have known her for as long as we have been here and that is 22 years. In the past, she only came in December, since she has stopped working, one month has turned into three. In the past few years Karin has also written small reports for her friends via e-mail, Rodrigues anecdotes and daily events, which just can happen on an island when you are here .... A highlight of every stay are the late afternoons, which she traditionally likes to hang out at "Mingkoo". A beer, "Phoenix" of course, and then watching the cats and everything being around ...
I just took the liberty to post her "Mingkoo report" here, thanks for your consent, Karin !

For many years, it has always been a special pleasure for me to drink my beer in the evening at Mingkoo. Actually the restaurant is called "Madame Marcel". Marcel after the father and as he died so early,  his wife has continued to run the place, that was the origin of this strange word combination.
Earlier, when the mother was still standing behind the counter, I just sneaked past and didn't dare even to think of entering as it was just a real dive. As the name suggests, they are of Chinese origin. The mother died this summer at age 80. She was born in Rodrigues. The grandparents emigrated from southern China to live a better life.-

Throughout the years the son has made it a nice "restaurant". Of course, not as we imagine. But at least one no longer sits on stools, but on chairs with proper backrests, the tables are wiped clean and there is a ladies' toilet because of the regulations! However, I would use it only in an extreme emergency. It's tiny, with an open space above, as it is for the men which means you might be heard throughout the place!

The "restaurant" is a meeting place, a kiosk, news exchange, a location to pass time and the best pub I know. On "Pay Day", when people get their salaries or various allocations, and now around Christmas, it is booming there. By the end of month Minko may close earlier.-

Under the glass counter are always bowls with some goodies. However, I've tasted only the hard-boiled eggs. The rest makes me feel slighly wary. From time to time owill buy half a pig, which is cut up then, seasoned and cooked. The rest gets into the air-dried sausages, which are also very popular. For days he has removed, almost lovingly, the skin and the ears of the pig from the bristles with a razor blade before everything moves into the pot. In between, money will be collected and exchanged, rum refilled. How the dishcloth looks I do not want to describe further. Everything which is falling down is grabbed by his little shy cat.-

In earlier times it was Pistache, the dog without permanent residence, who was once punished by dousing her with hot water, who would get the leftovers. But this summer, the dog died at an advanced age. Since everyone in town knew and liked her, Birgit has installed a nice little reminder sign on the door.-

Renate and Eliane, two French tourists coming for many years to Rodrigues during the European winter had found Pistache nearly dead and nursed her back to health from her life threatening injuries.-

Pay Day

Recently a wife appeared to pick up her husband, because he probably squandered the budget money  every evening. As reaction there was endless cheering. Eventually it ended by her joining the table.....-

Just around the corner of Mingkoo's pub - the center of the local Muslim community and the Mosque of Port Mathurin

In the evening, when it gets a little cooler, the Muslim families are strolling through the village. That means, the man in the white robe walking straight ahead, and his wife and children in adequate distance behind him. The women veiled in dark black, except for the slits. Surely, here two worlds are colliding.-

And here is a photo from days gone by when there were still stools without backrests, here it's me with Waltraud and Helmut from Germany, who as Karin could not escape the charm of Mingkoo's pub either. That was in 2006.-

And that was today at noon on Saturday, Mingkoo, since 2017 married to Jenny, preparing for another final of a working week with rum, pork and Chinese eggs.-

Frauenrechte: Es tut sich was im Staate Saudi Arabiens....Women's Rights on the rise in Saudi Arabia

source:Internet

Something is happening in the state of Saudi Arabia in terms of women's rights. On the occasion of the first elections in December 2015, in which women are allowed to both vote and stand, here is a selection of three articles, two in German (Spiegel 2013 about Domestic violence and the No Abuse campaign, Zeit Dec 2015 about the elections, Al Jazeera Dec 2015 about the elections. -

Here the article from Al Jazeera concerning the elections in Saudi Arabia

For the first time in Saudi Arabia, women are allowed to run as candidates and cast their votes in local elections.

The municipal polls will open at 8am on Saturday and close at 5pm, local time (5am-2pm GMT).

Two-thirds of seats at the kingdom’s 284 councils are up for grabs, with more than 1,000 female candidates in the running, compared with more than 6,000 men.

Some 100,000 women have registered to vote, meanwhile, compared with more than 400,000 men.

First results are expected towards the end of the day. Final results will come a month later as the process allows for the electorate to raise objections in that period.

Speaking to Al Jazeera on Friday hours before polls opened, several women said they felt excited and positive that women are participating, with the hope that society as a whole would benefit from more diversity in public affairs leadership.

Here are some of their views:

Lama Al-Sulaiman, candidate in Jeddah

Of course we’re excited; it’s the first time we’re participating. If I win, I’m going to be happy and then I’m going to continue my work. For 10 years, I’ve worked on women’s issues and employment, so when this opportunity came along and I had the experience, I thought, why not? I don’t think it [women’s involvement] will change things, but it’s another push forward. It’s a wheel that has been rolling and this is another achievement, a kind of progression.

Women here are doctors and engineers – it’s not like women aren’t there. The international media sometimes has narrow views; they only report the bad stories. We have them, we have weaknesses and every citizen goes through challenges – those shouldn’t be belittled. But to think that 50 percent of the population is going through those challenges is also ridiculous.

Lama Al-Sulaiman

When I read some things, it sounds like men don’t allow women to mix with them. But we did a poll recently of 3,000 participants, asking men and women if they want segregation in the workplace. Fifty-two percent said they preferred to work in a segregated environment, 42 percent said they don’t mind as long as there were segregated spaces in the office.

I am a person who is extremely tolerant and I respect the opinion of everyone, including the ultra-conservatives. Pushing people to change their habits takes a long time, it doesn’t happen through shock doctrines or pressure. More women in the workforce is going to reduce their [ultra-conservatives’] fears of the unknown.

More women need to participate, there’s an economic need for that. But I don’t like when we push people into environments they are not used to. I respect the ultra-conservatives. If we win, I hope they work with us. I’ve worked with such people before in the chamber of commerce and it’s been enlightening to have dialogue with them. That’s when fears are reduced, the fighting and aggression declines.

Manal Faisal al-Sharif, banned candidate in Jeddah

I think I was banned because people complained that I was using the media to promote my campaign. But I wasn’t. I simply tried to give women information about how to vote, the process. I tried to raise awareness about the vote. I wanted to encourage them to go to the centres with the correct papers. I guess someone got angry and made formal complaints.

In any case, I am still very excited about the elections. I’m proud of my colleagues, neighbours and friends. I’m on WhatsApp groups with women and there is a real sense of solidarity. Some are like training centres for how to go and vote and participate. It’s a big step towards equality.

Tomorrow, I will vote for a female candidate because I believe she has a good programme. She will help the area. But my biggest fear is that no women at all will be elected.

Saudi Arabia does have very conservative segments of society, but we have people in the middle. And I think those that encourage women are in the majority.

Women can effect change, and I think by having women in these positions will build bridges with the people who hold ultra-conservative views.

Mona abu Suliman, media personality and consultant in Riyadh

Even if women don’t win tomorrow, just going through this process was really important. Recognising women’s votes in decision making is a step towards equality.

There are people who see women voting and running in the election as another step towards westernisation. They dislike seeing women in public-facing roles. But I don’t think they are in the majority. The majority is either neutral or accepting.

Those who are against it basically fear we will turn out like the United States, with women and men mixing in every aspect of life.

On the whole though, given what’s on Twitter, on TV, what friends say, I think there is a real delight that women are part of this and that women might win.

Unnamed Riyadh-based candidate

Of course we’re happy. This inclusion was the wish of [the late] King Abdullah [bin Aziz] and [ruler] King Salman [bin Aziz]. It was their wish to have women in the right place, and it means a lot.

Participation means a lot for both men and women. The achievement of this is that we will be developing what has already been started – we want to our work to reach the people in the community and improve their situation.

I don’t want to say anything about critics. All over the world, there are people for and against things. I don’t want to attack anyone. I want things to be smooth and peaceful.
