Kindergarten in Anse Quitor...

Here a view on the Giant Tortoise Reserve in Anse Quitor. Usually it is very calm and peaceful, on this specific day on July 9 pupils from school classes were on excursion.

And here you see me with Nene, my adopted Aldabra tortoise of maybe 16 years. In the beginning I thought she was a she but I had to learn that it will take some more years to know it exactly...

Das sind George, Chloé und David von dem Segelboot S/Y Magwen. Letzten Sonntag besuchte ich mit ihnen das Naturreservat in Anse Quitor.-
These are George, Chloé and David from S/Y Magwen. Last Sunday we went to visit the Reserve Francois Leguat at Anse Quitor.
Here a look into the kindergarten of the tortoises. Since the park's inauguration 342 little tortoises were born, most of them belonging to the Radiata species from Madagascar, the Aldabra tortoises seem to produce their offspring less fast .
Here you see the difference between a tortoise born last year in January (left) and one born this year. Not such a big difference if you ask me...But the older one was more forecoming and mischievous, placed on my hand, she even dared to pee which made me feel honoured...
And in order to make the baby tortoises grow, fruits and tomatoes were served as Sunday breakfast...
But it will take not only lots of food to become as big and heavy as Foetidia. Fertility is reached between 15 and 30 years, that's what it takes too to determine their sex with the human eye. Though there are scientific methods to know about it earlier, but it's expensive as there are only 4 known experts worldwide who are specialised in it. More about breeding in a later posting.

„… und esst und trinkt, bis ihr in der Morgendämmerung einen weißen von einem schwarzen Faden unterscheiden könnt!“ – Ramadan und Eid ul-Fitr

The moon plays an important role in the Muslims' world. It is the new moon which decides about the begin and about the end of Ramadan, the month of the traditional fasting.

No matter where in the world...

...wherever there is a Muslim community, you will find them at least twice a year looking skywards ....

...in order to check for the visibility of the new moon...

Yesterday Eid ul-Fitr was celebrated in Rodrigues and Mauritius, Ramadan had to be extended by one day as the crescent of the new moon was not yet visible on Saturday, the 29th day within the feasting month.

Wir hoffen, dass gestern all unsere moslemischen Freunde und Bekannte ihr Eid Fest genossen haben, das Hähnchen-Briyani, das uns mittags gebracht wurde, war auf jeden Fall köstlich, wir sagen Danke!

We hope that all our Muslim friends in Rodrigues could enjoy their Eid day, the chicken briyani which was shared with us was really delicious, so we thank you!

This year not really time for sweet corn on Rodrigues, at least not like the year before in April when we celebrated a very good crop with a Maize Festival...

But the bears in Germany helped out...Maize festival in Bearlin and Nuremberg last week, have a look and enjoy...!
