AIDS Candle Light Memorial in Rodrigues

Last Sunday the first AIDS Candle Light Memorial took place in Rodrigues, an event which has been held worldwide for 25 years now to commemorate all victims of AIDS and to continue the fight against this disease which has already cost more than 2 million people their lives in all parts of the world. About 39 million people are estimated to be infected with the virus.

New York und Los Angeles folgen.

History: 1983 the first Candle Light March took place in San Francisco, organized by only gay men who were almost showing the symptoms of the disease themselves. At that time testing was not yet available but sharing the same set of symptoms and seeing more and more friends dying so fast made them want to do something - something to honor the ones who were dying so early, to call out their names, to get out of anonymity and to give hope for everyone to fight against the virus. 10 000 people of San Francisco followed the call which was a great success. New York and Los Angeles follow.1984 was the only year without candle light march- by then the first organizers were either dead or very ill, noone had thought of a second edition the year before. But there were others who took up the idea and since 1985 Candle Light Marches have been taken place annually in more and more places. With the propagation of the disease, concerning everyone in society and not any longer only a single group and on all continents, the circle of organizers became wider too. Last Sunday candles were lit in 119 countries. For Mauritius it was the third year, while Rodrigues participated for the first time.

It is us who have to change our view on people with AIDS, our way of thinking...don't let us become orphans."

Situation in Mauritius and Rodrigues
Since the first reported infection in Mauritius 1987 and 1998 in Rodrigues, figures have been on the rise as everywhere in Africa. Were it in May 2005 still 669 documented cases of HIV/AIDS, the official statistics speak already of about 3300 by end of 2007, including 217 persons who already had died by end of November (3 of them kids). In Rodrigues there was a long time nothing to be heard after the first case until 2005 when we had officially 6 infected persons. But more alarming was the discovery that in the 669 figure of Mauritius more than 100 infected persons were Rodriguans. Now 25 cases have been documented, 6 of them already deceased including 2 kids. For Mauritius it is estimated that the total number of people concerned is likely to be 10-to 30000 considering that only few people decide for a test. The majority of new infections concerns the age group 15 to 49 years, more than 90 % are drug related due to sharing unclean needles. In consequence Mauritius reacted by introducing a Methadon and a needle exchange program, antiviral treatment is free. It is to be noted that Mauritius belongs to the few countries spending regularly 15 % of the annual budget for health.

Other regions in the Indian Ocean

Madagascar with about 20 million inhabitants counts officially 117 000 persons infected by HIV/AIDS. Poverty, predominating for more than 2/3 of the population, very limited access to health services and testing, a high rate of sexual transmittable diseases contribute to an alarming situation.Testing of pregnant women confirm that there is a high prevalence of infections by unprotected sexual intercourse.

Reunion counts 618 infections by 2006, double as much as 10 years before.

Between 1987 and 2006 the Seychelles counted about 250 persons infected, the Comores 30.

Even when on Sunday several thousands of Rodriguans followed the call of the Regional Assembly and the organizing group of the Memorial, it is to be noted, that in the context of prevention and education a lot rests to be done. Knowing that only 1.4% of the sexual active adolescents use condoms or that the local AIDS Unit is contacted by only one person per month for voluntary testing, it is necessary that also parents change their views. Their daughters and sons of today are sexual active, ignoring this fact does not help. They have to learn to protect themselves, Increasing figures of teenager pregnancies confirm that the risk is real.

The free condoms, provided by the administration and distributed with info material by several members of youth groups and Mauritius Family Planning, have been accepted thankfully on that day, now it rests to hope that they will be used adequately when the situation calls for it!

Fight AIDS and not people with AIDS!

The AIDS Memorial Quilt -another example of commemoration

In June of 1987, a small group of people who didn't know each other, gathered together somewhere in San Francisco , they wanted to do something to help people understand the devastating impact of the disease, to document the lives they feared history would neglect. This meeting served as the foundation of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt with the goal to create a memorial for those who had died of AIDS.Today the Quilt is a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic. More than 44,000 individual 3-by-6-foot memorial panels have been sewn together by friends, lovers and family members. See the quilt database of the NAMES Project.

I think that AIDS is a normal thing, it is just a disease. The symptoms of AIDS are similar to diseases everybody can get:influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis or cancer. What is different, people with AIDS can not fight back an infection the defense in their blood is affected. It can happen by blood transfusion, exchanging the same needles (when people use drugs for example)and what is very important:when we have non protected sexual relations. When a friend or someone of the family gets AIDS,first everybody will probably be shocked. Many people abandon them, although it is just an infection caused by a virus.

I was in Malabar too,the program was good,I liked very much the sketches.
