Mauritius - Erstmals Frau als Vizepräsidentin des Landes

Mauritius hat seit dem 12.November zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte eine Vize-Präsidentin. Nach dem Tod ihres Vorgängers Angidi Chettiar wurde sie von Prime Minister Ramgolam für dieses Amt vorgeschlagen und ohne Gegenstimme in der National Assembly gewählt. Sie ist Journalistin von Beruf, war Präsidentin der Mauritian Labor Party. Ihr Großvater war einst Parteimitbegründer. In einem Interview mit der Presse sagt sie, dass sie hofft, dass ihre Wahl auch impulsgebend für andere Frauen in Mauritius sei, die Führungspositionen in der Politik anstreben.

ember 2010 following the death of former Vice President, Angidi Chettiar. She was elected unanimously by all members of the National Assembly to serve also as First woman as Vice President of the Country. She was a member of the Mauritian Labor Party and later became the President of the Party . She is the grand daughter of Bartholomée Ohsan who was a founding member of the party. She is a journalist by profession and also was a News Annnouncer on the National TV Channel, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.

She was married to Yves Joseph Bellepeau who was a businessman and who died 3 days after she was sworn in as Vice President .He died on the 16h of November 2010.

She took oath at State House (0fficial Residence of the President), Réduit on Saturday morning. On the same day, she was called on to be the Acting President soon after the President, Sir Anerood Jugnauth , left for India in the evening.

In 2009 she was decorated by President Jugnauth as Grand Officer of the Star and Key of Indian Ocean . She therefore uses the suffix (GOSK).
