Rodrigues Repatriation Batch No.1: Welcome home.... und ein Unbekanntes-Flug-Objekt

  Yes, after some unforeseen obstacles, the 60 repatriated Rodriguans eventually arrived Sunday evening in their Quarantine Hotel "Le Flamboyant" which has been barred for the public

Ein Air Mauritius ATR 72-Flugzeug, das gestern etwa sechzig Rodriguer nach Hause bringen sollte, die aufgrund der Covid-Krise wochenlang auf Mauritius gestrandet waren, erfuhr gestern ein ungewöhnliches und unerwartetes Hindernis: statt Landung am nachmittag in Plaine Corail, wieder zurück nach Mauritius, da der Kontrollturm ein  "UFO" (Unidentifizierbares Flugobjekt) in der Mittellinie der Landebahn sichtete und Sicherheitsbedenken hatte. 

Verschiedene Versionen kursieren seitdem im Netz und in den Zeitungen, um was es sich hier wohl gehandelt hat. Favorisiert wird die These, es könnte sich um einen Ballon aus Googles Loon-Programm handeln. Angeblich war dieser Ballon seit mehreren Wochen rund um den Flughafen bereits vereinzelt gesichtet worden. Da es aber nur sehr wenige autorisierte Flüge auf dem zur Zeit ansonsten geschlossenen Flughafen gegeben hat, hat es wohl auch niemanden wirklich interessiert.

Sollte bestätigt werden, dass dieser Ballon tatsächlich Teil des Loon-Projekts von Google ist, ginge es darum, stratosphärische Ballons einzusetzen, um als Verbindungspunkte zum Internet in Gebieten zu dienen, die von herkömmlichen Telekommunikationsinfrastrukturen schlecht oder gar nicht bedient werden. Das Projekt, das zuletzt in  Kenia erst begonnen hatte, wurde Ende Januar offiziell eingestellt. Ein Projektmitarbeiter sagte, "eine kleine Gruppe des Loon Teams wird bleiben, um sicherzustellen, dass der Betrieb von Loon reibungslos und sicher endet - dies schließt das Ende des Loon-Pilotdienstes in Kenia ein." Aber so ein Loon Ballon in Rodrigues, ohne dass irgend jemand Offizielles davon Kenntnis hat..?

Was könnte es sonst noch gewesen sein? Ein vom Kurs abgekommener Wettersatellit? Eine Drohne, die mit einem Ballon verbunden ist? Könnte es ein Rodriguaer gewesen sein, der eine Drohne mit einem Ballon verbunden und über die Landebahn geschickt hat, um die Landung der ATR72 zu verhindern, weil er gegen die Rückkehr seiner Landsleute ist, aus Angst, dass sie das Covid-19 Virus auf die Insel bringen könnten? Die Polizei geht nun auch dieser Spur nach. 

Und ja, alles ging soweit sehr gut aus, die Rodriguer kehrten nach Auftanken in Mauritius gleich wieder zurück und landeten sicher gegen 19 Uhr in der Heimat, eine sehr emotionale Angelegenheit auf allen Seiten. Es gab Applaus für den Piloten und die Crew. Aber auch allen, die Überstunden am Airport Plaine Corail gemacht haben, gehört gedankt.

Und während man sich nun noch in der 7 Tage Sicherheits-Quarantäne gedulden muss, bis es negativ-getestet wirklich ganz nach Hause geht, sind die mauritischen Behörden ihrerseits dabei, die Bedingungen für die Rückführung der nächsten Gruppe festzulegen, die darauf warten, ihre Angehörigen ebenso rasch wie möglich zu sehen. 

Anzumerken ist noch, dass traurigerweise auch der Körper eines in Mauritius verstorbenen Mannes zurückgeführt wurde, seine Angehörigen können ihn nun endlich beerdigen und Abschied von ihm nehmen.

 At their floating altitude of 18 - 23 km (60,000 - 75,000 feet), Loon balloons fly well above commercial aircraft, so they are safely out of the way. Each balloon is equipped with a transponder that constantly transmits its position and altitude to air traffic control and any other aircraft in the vicinity. We coordinate directly with local air traffic control when balloons are launched, throughout their flight, and when they descend."

 

An Air Mauritius ATR 72 aircraft, which yesterday was supposed to bring home about sixty Rodriguans who had been stranded in Mauritius for weeks due to the Covid crisis, experienced an unusual and unexpected obstacle yesterday: instead of landing in Plaine Corail in the afternoon, back to Mauritius, because the control tower sighted a "UFO" (unidentifiable flying object) in the center line of the runway and had safety concerns. 

Since then, different versions have been circulating on the Internet and in the newspapers, what this was probably about. The thesis that it could be a balloon from Google's Loon program is favored. Allegedly, this balloon had been spotted around the airport for several weeks. But since there were only very few authorized flights at the currently closed airport, nobody seemed to be really interested in it. 

In case that this balloon is actually part of the Google's Loon project, the aim behind would be to serve as connection points to the Internet in areas that are poorly served or not served at all by conventional telecommunications infrastructures. The project, which had only just started in Kenya, was officially discontinued at the end of January. A project official said, "A small group of the Loon team will stay to ensure that Loon's operations end smoothly and safely - this includes the end of the Loon pilot service in Kenya." 

But such a loon balloon, normally supposed to be a stratospheric balloon, in Rodrigues without anyone officially knowing about it ..? What else could it have been? A weather satellite off course? A drone connected to a balloon? Could it have been a Rodriguan man who connected a drone to a balloon and sent it down the runway to prevent the ATR72 from landing because he is against the return of his compatriots for fear that the Covid-19 virus could be brought to the island? The police are now following this lead as well. 

And yes, everything went very well so far, the Rodriguer returned immediately after refueling in Mauritius and landed safely at home around 7 p.m., a very emotional affair on all sides. There was applause for the pilot and the crew. We also thank everyone who worked overtime at Plaine Corail Airport. And while they all have to be patient in the 7-day security quarantine until they can really go home with a negative test, the Mauritian authorities for their part are in the process of determining the conditions for the repatriation of the next group who are waiting to see their relatives as quickly as possible. It should also be noted that, sadly, the body of a man who died in Mauritius has also been returned; his relatives can now finally bury him and bid him farewell.
