Back since yesterday night, by the way, after a great closing party... - 3 days which I will certainly not forget so quickly. Still lots of photos to be checked, so for today only a few pics from the first leg on Saturday...
Leaving the harbour on Saturday morning to get to the starting line, a wonderful rainbow bid us farewell...(Here you see one of the 3 boats left behind in the harbour, the French couple in there was just too tired after 37 days on sea from Thailand. A second boat left Rodrigues on Saturday afternoon and as the third boat was just not fit for a regatta, the owner participated as crew on another boat.) So 8 boats out of remaining 11 were in...!
But the blue sky on pic 1 is treacherous, I can tell you, the clouds you can see here, didn't leave us most of the time..
As so some rain...not easy not only for the boat with the press...
Thanks to Double Dutch I looked most of the time like a thick yellow egg, but their heavy weather gear protected me well against all elements, so I was fine...Double Duch, here still before the starting line and close behind us, got later on problems with one sail...
And Hirondelle lost time on an anchor...
One of the few shots during the leg, most of the time strolling on deck was not possible, especially not for persons who have not only 2 left hands but also 2 feet which anchor not easily...
Just much more waves and wind than forecasted, and with the wind against us, a much harder leg than expected...Seasickness was an issue on most of the boats, and not only Rodriguan participants were concerned...(Hehe, I know what you all are thinking right now, but no, just to make up for a certain clumsiness, I have at least not been seasick, by the way I have never been it so far...)
Arriving at Port Sud Est, we were guided by Benoit and Eric by boat and VHF, a security service appreciated by all boats, as that area is a tricky one and GPS maps like Seamap doesn't correspond exactly...
The Coastguard too sent a delegation...
Here Grain de Sable behind us...
The first boats are anchoring already when we get in...
Stephane and Manuel from Mary Ann already busy...they take the time of the boats...
Here, by the way, in the background the winner of the first leg...it is Millenium from Australia, they made it in just 3 hours and 4 minutes (after handicap correction) ...
Mary Ann made it in second position (3 hours 24 minutes)...
It is on Mary Ann where we meet for a first drink after the regatta...(here Benoit, the guide)
Polaire, the Japanese boat, arrived on sixth position in 4 hours 22 minutes, here "my" skipper Hide...-
...and Dominique & Philippe (originally belonging to the crew of Mary Ann), who were assigned to us when our second Rodriguan crew did not show up on Saturday morning, they were great and did really a good a job!
Our friends from Double Dutch made it in 6 hours 33 minutes, they even had the privilege to be guided by two kite surfers...Something that sweetened certainly the fact of having been the latest...))
