Kapriziöse Imelda...Not the ordinary cyclone

At the fire-station this Monday (April 15) morning at about 6.30am

For starters, since this morning 4am Rodrigues has been on Cyclone Warning Class 3, and to blame is IMELDA, the name says it all..., as her famous human counterpart, she is very capricious and which, to the contrary of Friday's trajectory and strength, has put herself together to become again a tropical cyclone after she had already been downgraded to a moderate tropical storm. Mauritius and Rodrigues had been until this early morning both on Class 2 as IMELDA seemed to go down between both islands before changing once again direction, now swirling down closer to Rodrigues.

Surprisingly this morning our bakery was open

Class 3 usually means that everyone stays home unless one belongs to the usual emergency services involved such as police, meteo, fire services..., the last preparations should be completed now, but I was very happy when I saw that the bakery had opened, at least up until the weather would deteriorate entirely, to sell his baguettes fresh from the oven.

Early morning I went also straight to the bees of Care/Co, as I was curious how they were doing, the hives had already been secured since Wednesday before, just in case...Much to my surprise I detected a Death's Head Hawk Moth, for me a first. She had placed herself comfortably on the flying board and tried to get into the 3rd hive (left), unfortunately my photo did not come out so clear as the one below which I found on the net...

This moth species, one of the 3 grouped under the name of Acherontia atropos, is famous and feared by bee-keepers as they like to steal honey from the bees and once they have managed to get into the hive they can cause quite some damage. If you want to know more details about the Death's Head Hawk moth, just visit wikipedia for starters. And yes, I have removed the potential intruder.

Blurred as well, but most of the bees had still been very labourous, as they were too when I visited them Tuesday morning after Warning Class 4 had been lifted. Imelda brought us on Monday between 11 am and 5 pm wind up to about 120 km/h, but was not too destructive.

In Port Mathurin the damages were minimal in comparison to other less strong Tropical storms as we haven't had any major cyclone hitting Rodrigues since April 2013 (Kalunde).Maybe it had also something to do with the works effected before, drains were cleaned and obstructive objects removed. Tuesday morning at 8 we were back to normal in terms of electricity, the Internet needed 2 days more...One of the reasons for posting this later than expected.

And for the friends of Pistache - she too got through IMELDA without any harm...

Liebe Birgit,
