Links -mit den kleineren Ohren-, das ist Emmanuel. Er feiert heute seinen Geburtstag,den 11. um genau zu sein...!
Einmal mehr stelle ich fest, wie schnell die Zeit vergeht, es kommt mir wie gestern vor, dass er in meinen Kalender seinen Namen und mit unübersehbarem Stolz sein Alter eintrug, damals im Februar 2010 war er erst 9, aber schon Onkel eines nur 4 Jahre jüngeren Mädchens. -
Viel ist in der Zwischenzeit für ihn passiert, für den Fußball damals seine einzige große Leidenschaft zu sein schien. In der Tat kenne ich ihn mittlerweile aber auch als begeisterten Aquariumsbetreiber, mindestens einmal im Monat legt er sein gespartes Taschengeld in mindestens 2 neue Fische an, die er dann mit in die Bücherei bringt, wo wir anderen sie dann taufen. Im Umgang mit Nichte Elonie kann man sehen, wie ernst er seine Rolle als -übrigens nun zweifacher- Onkel nimmt, er ist auch ein guter Zeichner*, aber sein ganzer Enthusiasmus gilt der Pfadfinderei. Wie so viele Jungen und Mädchen hier auf Rodrigues, ist auch er Mitglied der Mauritius Scout Association. Bei sovielen Aktivitäten kann man nur hoffen, dass er genügend Muße gefunden hat, sich auf seine wichtigen Prüfungen vorzubereiten, die nächste Woche beginnen. Ich hoffe Emmanuel ist wie bei den Pfadfindern allzeit bereit, für das, was da auf ihn zukommt...!Viel Glück, Emmanuel !!!
In the meantime, much has happened for him, to whom soccer at that time seemed to be the most important thing in the world. In fact, I know him now also as an enthusiastic aquarium lover, at least once a month, he invests his saved up pocket money in at least two new fish - usually before he comes to the lessons in the library where the rest of us will figure out names for them. The way he deals with his niece Elonie shows how seriously he takes his role as uncle (now a dual uncle since Elonie got a baby brother), he is also a good artist*, but it is Scouting which has become beside soccer his most important hobby. Like so many boys and girls here on Rodrigues, he is a member of the Mauritius Scout Association. With so many activities one can only hope that he has found sufficient time to prepare for his important school exams starting next week. So hopefully the Scouts' motto "Be prepared" will apply in his case too ...!

Übrigens, Pfadfinder gibt es in Mauritius bereits seit 99 Jahren, also seit 1912. Was Rodrigues betrifft, bin ich chronologisch nicht ganz auf dem Laufenden, nur dass die Pfadfinder hier sehr aktiv sind. Fast alle Kinder, die ich kenne, sind entweder schon bei den Pfadfindern oder wollen es werden.
Hier in Rodrigues ist die Verbindung zur katholischen Kirche besonders gut sichtbar. Es gibt spezielle Scout-Gottesdienste, und Samstag nachmittags sehe ich sie immer alle Richtung Kirche in Port Mathurin strömen nachdem sie ihre Treffen hatten, selbstverständlich in vollem Pfadfinderoutfit...-
By the way, it has been already for 99 years that Scouting started in Mauritius, as to Rodrigues I don't know exactly the timeline, only that the association is very active, most of the kids I know have or want become Scouts.
"Most Scout groups are sponsored by religious bodies, schools, colleges, and others institutions. All Scouts help during religious processions, regardless of creed, ..."
Here in Rodrigues the connection to the Catholic Church is very visible. I see them almost all Saturday afternoons after their meetings attending mass in our church in Port Mathurin, sure in full Scout gear and outfit, there are even special Scout Services...
