Segler in Rodrigues....Meet S/Y Lupina and the Brigantine Neptun

 S/Y Lupina

A sailing yacht built in 2006, sailing under Swiss flag with Pia Koch and  Köbi Brem. They started their voyage 8 years ago. I f you are interested to lear more about their boat and their circumnavigation, you can find lots of stories with great photos on their blog.

S/Y ZOE ZOE is sailing under the flag of NETHERLANDS. Her length overall is 17 meters and her width is 8 meters.

Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on S/Y Paje.

S/Y Neptun is sailing under Danish flag and is a registered non-profit organization with the purpose of providing training opportunities for anyone interested in learning traditional sailing skills and seamanship while cruising the world oceans and exploring remote places.

While I was at the jetty to take photos of the yacht, it had already diappeared, and was on its way to Mauritius, obviously with a new charter group on board. By coincidence I met Pia and  Köbi from S'Y Lupina while at Kafe Rose, they had taken a photo of Neptun which they sent me.

Cocos Keeling

This beautiful red-footed booby was S/Y Lupina's companion for one day while in Cocos Keeling.I love boobies, even if their feet aren't blue.

Hier Pia mit der Flagge von Cocos Keeling.

Here is Pia with the Cocos Keeling Islands flag.

S/Y Lupina's route map..., still at Cocos Keeling before they set off for Rodrigues.

Müll gibt es in jedem Paradies.

There is trash in every paradise.

Hier S/Y Lupina nicht im Gegenlicht. Nicht in Rodrigues.

Here S/Y Lupina not backlit. A photo I borrowed from their blog.

A toilet with a ramp on a deserted island. That gives one food for thought... and yes, this isn't in Rodrigues either but on Christmas Island :)

And because it is so interesting, here is a little more on the brigantine Neptun...

S/Y Neptun hier mit vollen Segeln... - S/Y Neptun here under full sail...

The 2026 season is the opening chapter of a 482-day world voyage. Brigantine NEPTUN leaves Bali on 1 May 2026 and arrives in Cape Town by Christmas, two long ocean legs, 6,428 nautical miles of trade-wind sailing, island landfalls, and the great rounding of the Cape of Good Hope.

Leg 1 crosses the Indian Ocean from Bali to Mauritius via Komodo, Cocos (Keeling) and Rodrigues, three months of trade-wind ocean sailing. Leg 4 is the culmination, a long offshore passage from Mauritius to the tip of Africa and the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope, one of the most storied pieces of sailing on earth. (Source)

The full history of the Neptun is not precisely known; it was reportedly built in 1947 by the D. W. Kremer Sohn shipyard in Elmshorn, Germany, commissioned by F. Laeisz (Hamburg) as a fishing vessel. At the time, Kremer was a leader in the construction of fishing cutters—such as the famous Kremer 21-meter model—because these small vessels were permitted to be built legally under the Allied restrictions aimed at combating post-war hunger. Later, the ship was acquired by Poland and used as a border patrol boat. In 1959, it received new registration papers and was converted back into a fishing vessel. In 1990, a man named Henny discovered the ship in IJmuiden (Netherlands), where he refitted it, installed masts, and maintained it. In December 2022, he sold the ship to the non-profit organization Neptun with the aim of creating a community vessel featuring a sail training program for voyages around the world.

There are lots of stories on this blog about sailing yachts stopping in Rodrigues. Go to the Search bar in the middle of the right blog column of the web site and tap keywords like sailingcircumnavigation ...There are certainly some more hidden but for starters it might do....

SY/Y Not - Rodrigues...Karibikfeeling im Indischen Ozean

The season of yachts visiting Rodrigues during their circumnavigations is soon coming to an end as cyclone season is approaching. Only few yachts are still mooring in the harbour. Here a print of a Rodrigues report done by the German crew of "Y Not" who have also spent some time here this season before continuing their turn to Mauritius, La Rèunion and South Africa.I hope the authors have no objection to get a place here on this blog with their text and a few of their photos. The English translation was done by me.

Very friendly officials, a mountain of forms - that's how can be best described the clearing process in Rodrigues. After that the way is clear for the greatest invention given to the world by the French - fresh baguette !!!

A gnat shit on the Passage Charts Map of the Indian Ocean. The top of a volcano, across just 6 x 17 km of size - that is Rodriguez. Its former wealth - Ebony -long cut down, even before the French had to cede to the English the strategically important point on the spice route. Not entirely voluntarily. The last giant tortoise had already been eaten.

40,000 people live on the island under the management of Mauritius, mostly descendants of former African slaves. Creole, French and English are spoken here (in order of importance, even though it was almost 200 years British colony).

Seeing the island, one wonders of what the people are living here? No natural resources, no industry. Just small scale agriculture, some crafts and fishing, mainly for their own consumption. They help each other, so one can't see any beggars. By far the largest employer is the government. We have never seen so many policemen as here. The crime rate is extremely low, because everyone knows each other. The prison walls are painted on the outside with colorful images, a task for schools.

Attractions? Well - a tiny botanical garden, a not much larger Nature Reserve, a sanctuary to settle the Giant tortoises back on the island, and some caves which are definitely worth a visit. Despite this, the island has a special flair. The crew of "Lop to" has described it aptly: Caribbean feeling, only with a lot of friendly people. For Ute the best on the island is, that as a woman she can relax and feel at ease, without having the feeling to miss something important.
