Die Königin der Nacht....Queen of the Night

Brigitte E. wies mich in ihrem Kommentar zu Rar und Kurzlebig darauf hin, dass es sich bei der dargestellten Blüte aus unserer Nachbarschaft um die Königin der Nacht handelt. Mir hat das so gut gefallen, dass ich daraufhin nochmal ein wenig gegoogelt und erfahren habe, dass die Königin der Nacht im Jahr 2009 zum Kaktus des Jahres gekürt wurde und, was ich noch interessanter fand, dass die Bestäubung über Fledertiere erfolgt. "Ihren Namen bekam die Pflanze, die botanisch korrekt Selenicereus grandiflorus heißt - wegen ihrer großen weiß bis cremeweißen Blüten, die nur für eine einzige Nacht blühen. Vergänglichkeit. ... Nur wenige Blüten sind noch größer als die der Königin. Übersetzt bedeutet der Name so viel wie “großblumiger Mondkaktus” - und das trifft die Sache im Kern. Wer schon einmal das faszinierende Schauspiel erlebt hat, wenn sich über Stunden die großen Knospen öffnen, weiß, dass die Pflanze ihren majestätischen Titel sehr zu recht trägt. Bis in die frühen Morgenstunden läßt sich das Aufblühen und Vergehen erleben. Spätestens am Vormittag ist die Blüte nur noch ein Schatten ihres Selbst. Unabhängig davon ob bestäubt, oder nicht, schließt sich die Blüte wieder und sinkt nach unten.

Aber nicht nur schön, auch nützlich ist die Königin. Seit langer Zeit wird aus der Pflanze ein wirksames Herzmedikament gewonnen.

Ab 80 bis 100 cm Trieblänge kann man mit den ersten Blüten rechnen. Die Blüten kommen ab Mai bis Juli, meist an schwülen, gewittrigen Abenden nach warmen Tagen.

Der Name “Königin der Nacht” ist übrigens international: Queen of the night, reine de la nuit, Regina della Notte, Reina de la Noche, Rainha da Noite, Dronningen af Night, Koningin van de Nacht, Królowa Nocy. -

Botanically correct the Queen of the Night is called Selenicereus grandiflorus - it got its name because of their large white to creamy white flowers that bloom for only one night.Transience.
