Wahlfieber....Elections in Rodrigues

Today in Rodrigues

Tourists may have been wondering since January 8 about the sudden presence of  the colours green, white and red on the streets of Rodrigues. On some days some shops were even closed and only one day after Ethel some visitors were amazed by seeing so many people in celebrating mood, traveling in convoys on motorcycles and cars. So what is there to celebrate and as we're just at it, why are all alcoholic beverages in shelves covered since today, not allowed to be sold? The answer is simple: For weeks Rodrigues has been campaigning for elections to be held tomorrow.
After the dissolution of the RRA (Rodrigues Regional Assembly) on Wednesday, December 14th by the President of Mauritius, "the political scene in Rodrigues is in ebullition, especially since Tuesday 27.12., as soon as the Office of the President announced the writ and the holding of elections for the third Rodrigues Regional Assembly." Nomination Day was fixed for January 21 and Polling Day for 5 February 2012.

The lists of candidates were released on January 8 at the annual meeting of the political parties, when the OPR met its supporters in Pointe Coton while the MR rallied to Mourouk and the FPR at Baie aux Huitres.
Traditionally important meetings for all supporters, reason enough to close shops and show their colour.

Only Ethel could have changed the course of events by storming also on Saturday 21, in that case the Nomination Day would have had to be relocated. But as Warning Classes could be removed at early morning hours, the registration of the 44 established party candidates could take place as scheduled. So it's tomorrow's choices which will decide for the next 5 years Rodrigues future.

Johnson Roussety's FPR on Wednesday at Anse Aux Anglais, not only rallying supporters for the last time before elections but also celebrating the first anniversary of the party

The ‘Mouvement Rodriguais’  (MR) of Nicolas Von Mally (in power since 2006), the ’Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais (OPR) of Serge Clair (in power from 1982 to 2006) and the ‘Front Patriotique Rodriguais’ (FPR) of the former Chief Commissioner Johnson Roussety are, apart from the 'Muvman Independantis Rodriguais' (MIR, a little party presided by Stevenson Collet), the three main political blocs competing for the 18 seats available in the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. Voters will have to choose two representatives from each of the six regions, that is only 12 members whereas the other six will be chosen by the Electoral Commission based on the Proportional List.

In 1967 Rodrigues was granted for the first time the universal right to vote, since then a total of 16 elections took place in 45 years, three of them partial elections. Whereas the national average in elections is every four and a half years, the average in Rodrigues lies at 3 years and less. Alone since its independence in 2002, six  elections took place, making Rodrigues actually to a place of  permanent campaigning (L'express Rodrigues 12/01/2012).

Friendship beyond political differences

Pictures like this one, on which supporters of different parties embrace with friendship not on stake by belonging to the "hostile" camp, are currently rather rare and therefore very special. The atmosphere is heated mainly between supporters of the two major parties MR and OPR. Many Rodriguans think that the result of the election might be rather close, giving the not less combative FPR potential chances to play a role in tipping the scales ... Monday, we will know more.
