"The World" in Rodrigues

Whenever a cruise ship comes to Rodrigues, it is a very special event, even for those with a more critical approach to cruises with their inherent flavor of flaring luxury, money, accompanying environmental sins, and not just since the tragic accident of the Costa Concordia on January 13. But: previously only three times cruise ships had been in Rodrigues, which might explain that even a critical mind is not completely immune to a certain degree of excitement.Concerning "TheWorld" it was not different.

Until yesterday, only few knew of her arrival, a rarity when you consider how fast news travel usually on the island. Normally the arrival of such a ship is an event involving major logistics, especially when passengers go ashore to explore the island for half a day.So far I have experienced that three times, 2003 when the "Astor" arrived, and in 2005 twice, first with the "Bremen" followed by the "Europa", all three German cruising ships.

Personally I liked the "Bremen" a lot, it is a boat which is also equipped for Arctic conditions.    Passengers and crew left a very relaxed and open-minded impression, although a short stay it was filled with lots of nice and interesting conversations.

Again, when the "Europa" was here

Traditional music, excited Rodriguans of all age groups gathering the whole day at the jetty in Port Mathurin, By the way, the features in that bright sky-blue had been painted not even 24 hours before...))

Sorry again , the image is blurred too

As I could learn from a conversation with the ship's doctor Dragan Pjesivac from Montenegro, all 165 apartments are now in the possession of 50 residents. During the Rodrigues stop there have been 85 passengers on board, together with 250 crew members.

Life in Luxury

"The facilities on board are impressive even by cruise liner standards.

Alongside two swimming pools and five restaurants, there is a golf driving range which uses golf balls made out of fish food to allay any environmental concerns. "About 70% of the residents play golf," explains Hans Henrik Sando, the ship's own golf pro and director. The residents also enjoy a full-sized tennis court, several bars and shops, a library, a health spa and a fitness centre. And if one does not feel like mixing with one's fellow millionaires on deck, each apartment boasts a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, cooker and fridge - not to mention the washing machine and jacuzzi on the balcony.

The World Cruise ship is considered to be the world’s largest private yacht. It is a floating residential neighbourhood owned by its residents which are currently from 40 various countries. They live on board and sail circumnavigating the world. The World Cruise Ship stays in ports from 2 to 5 days. There are people that stay onboard full time others stop-over at their sea residence at regular intervals throughout the year."

There are 165 residential "units" in three categories on board that were purchased by the owners for prices from 600,000 to 13.5 million U.S. dollars. According to the operating company ResidenSea in Florida they have all been sold since 2006. In addition to the purchase price for the apartments, the occupants have to throw in annual operating costs in six-digit-range for ship, crew and shipyard overhauls.

The World is the brainchild of Knut U. Kloster Jr. His family had been in the cruise ship industry for a long time. The hull was built in Sweden and the finishing was done in Rissa Norway. The ship made its maiden voyage in March 2002 with about 70 enthusiastic residents on board. (source)

Excursion time for some 25 residents of "The World"

Considerable confusion surrounding the stop of cruising vessel "The World" today in Port Mathurin. It seems that cruise operators did not provide for coordination with tourism officials in the island for their passengers, mostly tourists from Australia, the United States and Europe. The visitors have not been welcomed "à la rodriguaise" as it is tradition upon arrival at Port Mathurin. ... (source: Le Mauricien)

Next stop for "The World" will be Australia...

Although not perfect, as Rodrigues can do better when informed early enough, I hope that the few Rodrigues visitors on excursion had time enough to get a glimpse of the beauty of our island.
As to me, I enjoyed myself as observer, rewarded with the opportunity to talk to some residents and the doctor who btw seemed to be at least as curious as me, it was great speaking to him.Unfortunately he had to be back on board early, so not enough time for the whole island which he genuinely seemed to be interested in. Maybe another time.

However, it was nice to have "The World" in Rodrigues.Good luck and fair winds....

Liebe Birgit,
