Towel Day...Auch in Rodrigues...))

Heute ist Towel Day (Handtuchtag)..

Today is Towel Day.
And without Knut I hadn't known what it is all about.

Today is Towel Day. A day dedicated to Douglas Adams, since 2001 celebrated each year on 25th of May, 2 weeks after his death. Until now I haven't got a chance to read his science fiction cult classic "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" in which he described towels as one of the most important objects in the universe. But that doesn't really matter as for me I pay tribute to him today because of another book which I've already mentioned here a couple of times  "Last chance to see", in which in the very end even our island Rodrigues is mentioned (yes, Douglas Adams was in Rodrigues!!) describing the encounter with a small plant which at that time was the only of its kind on Earth, close to extinction.

Here you can find all about our Café Marron and the Douglas Adams connection.

But there is much more to the book, alone the whole chapter about Mauritius is truly enlightening and shows how difficult it was in the 80s to protect species close to extinction like the Kestrel, the Pink Pigeon and the Echo Parakeet. Unlike nowadays, devoted conservationists like Carl Jones, founder of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and now candidate for a prestigious conservation prize, faced more obstacles, lack of understanding and resistance than support, and it is also thanks to Douglas Adams that millions of people know what kind of determination is needed of people like Carl Jones in order to take a stance for wildlife.

From critically endangered now listed as endangered - the Echo Parakeet,
there were only 8 to 12 in 1986

The book ends with the prophetic sentence:
"I have the terrible feeling that we are in trouble."

Yet, this hasn't changed.
Towels in Innsbruck/Austria
where Adams' got the inspiration for writing the Hitchhiker's Guide...

However - Don't panic!

I admit, my towel was not the largest ever with which I roamed around in Port Mathurin, that I even dared is thanks to Valérie. When she was still kept in the artificial coma, I promised myself that at the smallest sign of progress I would grab a towel and walk around with it on Towel Day...On the day of that promise I learned later the afternoon that she was not anymore kept in the coma and able to breathe without the machine...So I made it a towel plus the book of Douglas Adams....

I just heard it in the news:
In the meantime there are 12 Café Marron plants in Rodrigues!

Liebe Birgit,

Chris

I think I should leave a little explanation here concerning the first pic with the polar bear and towel, as not everybody might know about my bear passion which started with Knut, the famous polar bear from Zoo Berlin 5 years ago, causing me to run his Outpost in the Indian Ocean and in consequence another blog which you can find here

http://die-K-files.blogspot.com

Unfortunately Knut died from a still undetermined, probably viral infection on 19 March 2011, and he is sadly missed.

But his blog, dedicated to polar bears and all zoo and wildlife & global warming connected topics continues, although at the moment with more breaks than stories for what I am sorry, it is simply a question of time.

And it was on Knut's own blog in 2008 that this towel pic was posted on Towel Day together with weird stories and even weirder references, the number 42 appeared as well, and I was really at a loss. But everybody who had read Adams Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy enjoyed themselves tremendously. Eventually one blogger enlightened us who were desperate to know what was all this fuss about. That's how I learned of Douglas Adams in the first place and then it took not long to find out about his incredible "Last Chance to see" book and the Rodrigues connection. That he was here on our island to report on endangered species is something which makes him very special for me.And Towel Day will remain in future for me the day I will try to convince more people to read the book as it is somehow timeless although (and also because of that) in the meantime some of the presented species have become extinct. Adams had a way to present and tell things without coming over as a righteous missionary, although he certainly was on an important mission, if I hadn't known Knut already...:)), Adams, with his humour, would have won me over immediately to become an environmentalist...

Have a nice day everybody, see you next year with a towel in Rodrigues...and Adams book in the hand...:))
